You can buy 4 amazon tablets and a surface go for the price of an ipp 12
And they don't run crippled io$
No thanks, Tim.
Next phone will be a pixel phone for me, too. Once you cripple Macs, I'm out for good.
Bye, apple.

I can see where Apple would make this mistake in reasoning. I mean, the iPad has about as many ports as the computers Apple makes.
Really?

MacBook Pro: 4 USB-C/TB3 Ports + an audio out. Can be easily and inexpensively expanded up to FIFTY-TWO "Legacy" Ports. No lack of Ports here!

MacBook Air: 2 USB-C/TB3 Ports, plus an audio out. Can be easily and inexpensively expanded up to TWENTY-SIX "Legacy" Ports. Pretty cool, eh?

iMac: 2 USB-C/TB3 Ports, Plus 4 USB3.0 Ports, plus an audio out: Twenty-Six Legacy Ports + however many USB devices you want with an inexpensive hub or two.

iMac Pro: 4 USB-C/TB3 Ports, Plus 4 USB3.0 Ports: FIFTY-TWO Legacy Ports + however many USB devices you want with an inexpensive hub or two.

Mac mini: 4 USB-C/TB3 Ports, a Dedicated HDMI 2.0 Port, 2 USB 3.1 Ports, plus an audio out: That's FIFTY-TWO Legacy Ports, a 4K HDMI Monitor, and however many USB devices you want.

IOW: You were saying, again???

To me the deal is pretty clear: if one forces him/herself to learn to do stuff the ipad way, he/she’s in for some nice hardware perks. Like, crazy high power-to-thickness ratio.

If one is in the position to do it, by all means..

(let’s not pretend a lot of people aren’t, outside the geeky bubble)

totally disagree also.
it means one is totally locked into the apple system.
no inserting a usb stick into the iPad to transfer files.
like many people, i have hundreds of movies backed up which i like to re-watch from time to time.
no more of that.
just one example …
Too bad that AirDrop and other Wireless technologies pretty much negate the need for "sneakernet" USB-Stick "file transfer".

Why touch interfaces are more kludgy and imprecise than cursor interfaces, in one image.

See also, the need for a stylus to do anything particularly precise on a touch device:

I mean, they're not wrong, an iPad *can* ultimately do a lot of what you can with a Mac... just a hell of a lot more slowly and more uncomfortably. But iPad users, you do you.

Meanwhile, I'll leave you with this from the Wall Street Journal the other day. (Spoiler alert: tablet sales ain't been so hot for a while either).

There are still so many things you cannot do at all with iOS or process of doing is so crippled you don't want to. Apple have all the means make it right but they won't because that would affect Mac sales.
But. But...

I thought everyone around here thought Apple didn't CARE about the Mac anymore!

(That's why the MacBook Air commercial is on TV as often as the iPhone Xr one)...

For a community of such smart people (most, I would think), we certainly have a ton of narrow minded people who refuse to acknowledge that the iPad is a computer for some strange reason. If it isn't the right tool for you, I totally get that, but get out of your box a little - your use case is not the same as everyone else's.

with any Mac adding a file to an app is easy and can be done wirelessly or with a direct connection. With the removal of the app store from iTunes you can't drag a file into an apps folder, it must be done using cellular or wifi. Large files require that you sit there moving your finger across the screen so the file transfers (I have several 600 MB Filemaker files). So, unless these 2018 iPads can connect to iTunes 12.6.5.3, all the fancy fast paced commercials in the world won't peak my interest.

Close... but not before there is a core comprehensive, roubust file/folder management system with a consitant UI at the heart of ios.. accessible from every app for all types of files.
Lack of this is a massive handicap... plus the restricted usb-c io

Just because Apple really, really, really wants everyone to buy a closed ecosystem, high-margin tablet versus an open-platform (or as open as Apple allows), lower margin Mac doesn't mean it actually makes sense. Nice of them to be trying so hard talking about it, but not actually making it more useful to people that haven't converted because of their current needs. These new devices have not addressed any of the issues to gain a larger share of the laptop market.

Just imagine a world where Apple has complete control over every application you install on your main computing device, where you can only connect what Apple allows you to connect, and where your data is hostage to the iCloud because of limited local storage. A perfect scenario for Apple's bottom line, not for the consumer.

Back in September, I went for a one day surgery, and with that move i brought my macbook pro to the local service point because of the faulty butterfly keyboard. I was without my mac for one week, and i only had my 10,5" iPad Pro...

At first i felt locked in.

- As a web dev: i can refer to this article, it's complete in every aspect: https://blog.usejournal.com/fe-webdev-on-ipad-pro-2018-c55283f01e4c

- As a musician: OH MY... It's far more capable and direct way to make music, than my mac. Sure, i'm missing Ableton, and it's tools, but i find the iPad Pro a very capable machine.

- As a DJ: Nowadays the only tool i'm using on stage is, DJay Pro on the iPad connected to a Reloop Mixtour. It's really a nice package, and it's not going to hide you like your laptop does, and it's also works with my Novation Launchpad Pro.

I just hope that Apple going to add far more feature to the next version of iOS.
