Apple shouldn't be aiming to make massive profits from these sort of services - the fact they are isn't great for long term customer loyalty. There will come a point where this all becomes too much.

£107.88 each year just to have access to photos I've taken isn't great value (especially when I am already spend thousands a year on hardware upgrades).
I’m sorry, but have you forgotten what a business actually is?! 😂

UK Prices, as I have apple one family at 22.95, and this price hike to 8.99 for 2TB, it is £1 shy of the Premier of 32.95 - that would give me fitness+ and news+
That's how they get you :D
I bet my children that our Premier is gonna go up from £32.95 to £34.95 in the next month.

But make sure you pay for Google photos, else they “optimise” (aka shrink and re-size your images, to fit in their “unlimited” storage.

I used to also use Google Photos until they did this.

I now use Adobe Lightroom and Cloud and also iCloud storage. I pay (happily for both).

There’s no such thing as a free meal.
Very true. I pay for Google One 100 GB (original size photos at €20 per year) and iCloud 50 GB (0.99 per month). This gives me two cloud services for a fair price.

So did you stop using Google Photos because the free version started to optimise your photos or because of the data capture done to personalize ads directed at you per your comment in a recent post?

At least they could deign and rise the storage too… with this practices, I will keep their products for longer periods without buying new ones.
5Gb for free are absolutely ridiculous.
And the tier strategic is mad too…

If you want to share all your private data with Google or Microsoft, that’s your prerogative. (Don’t forget both Google and Microsoft free services are funded through personalised ads, which means they need to know your data to personalise your ads.)

Apple doesn’t do this.

Enjoy.

As long as you do not mind them mine in your data, you are absolutely correct.

Again, as long as you do not mind them, compressing your photos, and making it so that you lose resolution and data, you are correct.

I know these privacy things will come up as soon as Google is in a sentence.

The logic is simple, if Google wants to mine my data then they should offer everyone unlimited storage without any string attached. This way they will attract lot more people and mine lot more data.

Secondly, it isn't Apple isn't mining your data, they absolutely are.

Thirdly, Google photo is slightly compressed without loading too much details. As long as it can produce reasonablely print quality if I want print, then it is good enough for me.

Forthly: if I am going to get ads, I will gets ads regardless, I would rather Google mine my data and provide ads that I can benefit from. I don't need ad tells me to buy something I don't need, I need ad tells me something that I will need

If you have access to Google Pixel 1 and there is nothing prevent to load your quality to Google Pixel 1 and upload from there.

First generation Pixel have access to unlimited full quality uploads to Google Photos. You can just pulg in your devices via OTG cable and load to your Pixel 1

I think you are all forgetting that Apple is a struggling business that was on the brink of bankruptcy 26 years ago. Show some understanding, please!

This.

Please have some compassion in your hearts. Tim Cook is scraping by on a $100 million a year and here you all are complaining about doing the right thing and supporting Apple.

People should have their children skip a few meals if necessary.

Wow, you have a lot more time and patience than I have.

It seems that my time is worth much more than yours is.

Because it is not free. It is a trade off of money vs. data mining, vs. time to implement an alternative. If you are do not care about selling your data for so little money that it your right, as long as you understand the choice you are making.

Google does mine your data and does not offer you unlimited storage, as you are willing to pay them and still have your data mined.
Secondly, it isn't Apple isn't mining your data, they absolutely are.
I think you are claiming that Apple is mining my iCloud and mail data. If so, please provide some evidence of this.

Glad that you do not care about quality. Others do.

I choose to not get ads at all.

The Google resizing is very destructive. It both downgrades the quality (increases compression), and reduces the resolution. If you are fine with that, great. But I don’t want my photos destroyed in return for free storage.

And Apple categorically does not sell you data for storage. If you can prove otherwise, I am all ears.

On the other hand, both Google and Microsoft openly admit this in their T&C’s.

You get what you pay for.

Nice qualifier. 'Doesn't sell your data for storage'

But their cosy default search arrangement with Google is just basically selling iOS user data for a fee however you want to dress it up.
