why the heck are people asking for a built-in webcam in the Cinema displays?

I hope the LCD's and webcam will be separate. That way you can upgrade to a better camera if it comes out in two years without needing a new $2000 LCD. More importantly, the camera could be adjusted in hight and angle.

Except for a laptop, I see no need to have a built-in camera.

The sheer amount of time I spend reading these forums is ridiculous. I really need school to start.

And on a completely related note, I hope the Montevina update comes soon.

I know this sounds far-fetched, but what I would like is a macbook pro in tablet form. I don't want a cheap, dumbed down version of a macbook with a touch screen, I want full functionality and processing to use applications like Photoshop and Illustrator on the go. Sure, taking notes in class would be nice on a tablet mac, but what about design oriented applications?

I think the 15" macbook would be the perfect size. I have never had a portability issue with my 15" powerbook, and 12-13" is just too small.

Something nice and usefull for the macbook and macbook pro would be an ejection system to pop out the cd/dvd drive and put in an extra battery.
So when you're on a day trip and have all youre files and media on the hard drive or on a usb-device (ipod, iphone, usb-stick) you don't need a cd/dvd drive and can put in an extra battery unit that will power youre computer twice as long.

Sounds like a nice idea to me. Hoping for swapping drives and batteries!

Although unlikely, this is an interesting idea. Anyway, I for one think its premature for the optical drive to be abolished entirely...getting rid of the floppy was an easy sell and did not inconvenience anyone

Nice idea. The additional battery should not add too much additional weight.

The iPhone has/will undoubtably hurt iPod sales, so Apple will now
look to offer features the iPhone won't have.

What is the main thing the Touch and iPhone lack? A "good" digital
camera. Apple will unveil a new iPod Touch with an advanced digital
camera on both the front and the back. The camera on the back will be
for pictures and video, the camera will be at least 6 megapixels, it
will have 3x optical zoom, a flash, video will be better than standard
YouTube quality. The front camera is for the new iChat feature we all
thought would be in the new iPhone. Welcome to the new iChat with
Video. The new Touch will have WiFi for easy uploading of your
pictures and video to MobileMe. The new Touch will also have the
improved audio and speaker (from the iPhone) to improve the quality of
iChat with Video. It will have 16/32GB of storage. On-screen editing
of pictures via a mini Touch iPhoto application.

Also, free iPhoto for all users (Mac and PC)!!

Apple tried it before (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_QuickTake),
but they got it right this time.

See the patent for the Touch Camera that Apple has already has(close
to the bottom of the page):
http://www.macnn.com/blogs/2008/07/10/apple-patents-point-to-future-imac-touch-display.html.

Multiple colors. Priced starting at $299 (16GB), $399 (32GB).
Product launching the end of August.
Apple has reinvented the digital camera.
Say good by to other digital cameras and camcorders.

Wait a minute....what did Apple say last year?
The exact same thing! "There will be a product transition I can not get into."

What did Peter mean LAST YEAR? The iMac redesign.

So fellas, do not get too exited in advance!

A MacBook touch would be great though. :D

I don't think combining the mac mini with apple tv will happen. They're for two different audiences. People who want mac minis want an affordable, decent computer (except that they're outdated, spec-wise). Most mac mini owners aren't interested in AppleTv. I can see Apple TV customers wanting the combination, but for the mac mini audience, half of what they're paying for would be something they'll never use.

I say keep them separate. Give the Apple TV more functions. Upgrade the Mac mini and lower price, or keep the price and redesign.

---

Now, I also think people have been pretty liberal in their predictions. Apple makes it sound magical, but I think it's going to be updates mostly.

I'd also say the tablet or PDA isn't going to happen. Although that gizmodo link will give it the benefit of the doubt for me.

Wrong. It was the iPod Touch last year.

more likely:

• cinema displays, (20", 24", 30") with built-in cameras, slimmer profiles, and lower price points ($499, $699, $999)
• new entry-level computer, either update to mac mini or new model, with more competitive specs and price points
• new line of touch ipods with more space, lower price points
• new macbook pro and macbooks with slimmer aluminum case designs, lower price points, and the addition of a 17" macbook
• second iphone model with basic phone features and wi-fi only internet/email, etc, (essentially an ipod touch with phone features), priced at $99, fits into cheaper phone plans
• ichat for iphones and touch ipods

less likely:

• 40" cinema display
• 30" imac
• the best kept secret... the icar

Agreed! People are piling on listing every product they hope for, but in the end it will be the same scenario as last year and we'll probably get updates laptops.

QFT!

but at least it's something to do at my summer job where my work takes up about an hour of the 8 hour shift...

For real. But I haven't been reading so much lately. By the time I realise there's a new story up it's already at 300+ posts and I don't feel like fishing through..

Also, if they were to announce a keynote for next week today (IF), what time would it be announced?

Powerbook G5? (I couldn't resist.)

I agree with John Gruber -- it's likely an iPod Touch redesign, or it's the upcoming MBP redesign.

Balls - that's awesome - couch surfing just went 'Pro'...

this phrase from the piece is almost prophetic 'Pretty expensive to produce initially, but sold at "low" price that will reduce margins.Apple wants to move these babies. And move they will.'

and here's me thinking that I was going to be able to 'pass' on this next amazing product. Looks like I'd better prepare the credit card for September...just in case...
