It doesn't have to be abolished, just use a modular one that can be easily slid out to take a second battery. Pc laptops have had the feature on some models for ages. I think it's a great idea.

Yes, I agree that is a good idea. Also, you're exactly right; PC model's have that feature.

However, If Apple does that. Then there is problem of having a less "clam-shell" like Laptop. That's what I really like about the Apple Laptops. They're very sleek with out any edges, bumps, slots, etc... If you put removable devices in then you'll lose structure strength

SSounds like a nice idea to me. Hoping for swapping drives and batteries!

Dell thinks it's a good idea, as well as Lenovo, HP and many others.

In theory, yes, but plastic macbooks get cracks and the aluminum case on the MPB is notorious for denting. I'd rather have the increased functionality myself. But there's no accounting for taste. :D

Apple's late, not far ahead...

Just a guess: LED Backlit ACDs? Far ahead of the competition!

Transitions and Product Predictions

The only mac which is not aluminum is the Mac Book so I think this is a logical upgrade. I don't know why Apple has not anodized them, as I find the current color a bit boring.

The only two products without LED backlights are the Mac Book and the iMac, so these two will also make the transition to LED which will allow the designs to be thinner and more environmentally friendly.

A redesign of Apple's MacBook and MacBook Pro are long overdo IMO. Look for styling cues from the MacBook Air.

I think some possible new products are: a multi-touch mouse pad, possibly with LED backlit display inside, a giant iMac with TV / Cable HD tuner card, and a tablet Mac. I don't think Apple will do a "PDA" since the iPhone fills this niche.

I also wonder if Apple will eventually release a cheaper iPhone Nano to stomp LG's Chocolate. I think there is a market for people who don't need wireless access on their cellphone or want to pay the higher monthly fees, but want to combine devices to carry less "techno" clutter.

My three cents...

There are a number of things a larger iPhone / iPod touch could do that an iPhone / iPod touch couldn't do (as well).

exactly. see some of my earlier posts. i think within the next year for sure, and it would make perfect sense to do a holiday release. i don't know that they need to make the device smaller, necessarily, but with less functions. basically an ipod touch with simple bare bones calling/voicemail/text features.

i wonder if they'd offer a 'pro' version of the iphone with front-side camera for ichat and a higher megapixel camera on the back for better photo functionality.

to macphilsopher - no worries you're cool. i just think zfs is such a revolution and good idea, i want to see it now!!!!! i'm just too excited for the faster i/o performance, light weight space saving, snapshots, and compression capabilities - particular for the stuff like my library i don't use - to free up space. storage is just becoming a big deal, it takes up power and their will soon be a limit due to data corruption. zfs solves all of that + adds a new customer base to :apple: in business worlds.

as for new mbs and mbps, my wish list:
MACBOOK PROs
1.) screen- 14inch, 16 inch, 18 inch displays
2.) blue ray
3.) HDMI
4.) ddr3 ram
5.) optional switch graphics from intel to graphics card
6.) mba keyboard
7.) independent of keyboard video/audio controls
8.) optional robson cache
9.) optional SSD
10.) LED standard
11.) iSight optional

MACBOOKS:
1.) screen- 13inch, 15inch, 17inch
2.) intel x4500 graphics or bto nvidia card/integrated
3.) magnesium or aluminum enclosure
4.) eliminate the inch border around the screen
5.) bto ddr3 ram
6.) iSight optional
7.) LED standard
8.) backlit keyboard

Why on earth would you want the iSight to be optional?!?!?!?! and what do you mean by 'independent of keyboard video/audio controls'

My key thought is "Remote".

The new app for iPhone/Touch is where Apple is heading; from your couch controlling iTunes, appleTv, Safari, iCall...

So new iPod Touches, touch Nano's (cheap remote, if only for that), iTablet , VCR capable AppleTV, new displays with iSight and hdmi.

Apple is going to release a new enterprise device/software that takes advantage of ZFS. Something that allows schools to image disks for network booting of an entire campus of Macs. Perhaps OS X/ZFS servers that deliver unimaginable reliability and services. Something along those lines.

I think that is just a given. Apple is clearly designing some amazing gui tools, probably based on the iPhone SDK, or at least, taking notes from. MobileMe also proves this point, since it is "up in the clouds", something Johnathan Schwartz from Sun always says when describing ZFS. It is probably the filesystem for mobileme, and they adapted the push and microsoft exchange support / networking support. I bet Apple's internal development is well down the line, further than the Forge's. Seperately, farther internal development would also explain the skip of the release of the source for release 117 for release 119 & the corresponding binaries. I hope for zfs version 2 on leopard by Apple Expo Paris Sept/Oct. Full announcement at Macworld in January, and finally full release in 10.6 in a year or little more. In 2 years time, it will be the filesystem on every ipod and iphone, appletv, and mac, making home and business server projects ridiculously easy. huge competition to hp in that arena. My guess is August or September 2009 for 10.6.;)

(ps - i wonder if that means Apple will start selling programing tools at a cost for "pro" users to avoid making a business and home versions of OS X?)

Why on earth would you want the iSight to be optional?!?!?!?! and what do you mean by 'independent of keyboard video/audio controls'

i just don't want to pay for something i don't/wouldn't use with the isight.

as for independent of keyboard - i mean something like a dedicated spot for video and audio, not just as alternative functions on 'f' keys like the current keyboard. sorry if i can't explain that better.

This is the best way I think Apple could implement a touch screen computer. (One that is mean to be an only computer)

I'd be throwing my money at Apple.

The only thing that would need improvement is making a physical keyboard on the portable.

With the conference call being so similar to last year's, I believe they will go about releasing their new products like they did with the aluminum iMac last summer. They will probably announce an event within the next few weeks and then we will see new designs for the macbooks and macbook pros.

You forgot the Newton - Apple PDA.

The iphone/ipod touch IS the PDA

Might as well put in my two cents...

Probably will get:
---
* thinner Macbook with lower price point.
* drop ipod classic altogether ( sad, but they probably will )
*

That I can see happening. Sooner of later they will drop the classic.

* 720x480 ipod touch ( with actual 16:9 screen ) with a 200GB harddrive instead of flash, with an component and HDMI out port so you can take your entire movie collection with you wherever you go.

Now thats something worth getting....
* AppleTV model with DVR capability ( or finally buy out TIVO )

TV tuner.. a DUAL TV tuner, record one show while waching another. Complete with windows media center.

* wireless DVD-R or Blueray unit ( no idea how this would be done ) with batteries.

Yeah, wont happen

And the Cinema Displays.

There are a number of things a larger iPhone / iPod touch could do that an iPhone / iPod touch couldn't do (as well).

Then why not improve the current ipod/iphone instad of making 5 million other products like "iphone nano/ipod touch nano etc. We only need one model, just improve the current one and stop complaning

No it's not. It can do less than the Newton all-in-all.

Come on, its 2008 the iphone and the ipod touch can do anything the newton can do, just in a color display. You saying it needs a bigger screen and a stylus in order to work?

Face it, this is way better then the newton. Can conneect via wi-fi to internet, download apps, listen to music , watch your movies and TV shows. can do a hella lot more then the newton could

Oh my, and it doesn't even have a stylus.

yeah and the larger MONCRONE screen

Oh my, and it doesn't even have a stylus.

Your sarcasm is misplaced. There's quite a difference calling a 2007/8 product a pda and mentioning it doesn't have a stylus, considering how old the product is I'm comparing it to.

I'm all for being able to ditch the stylus if a better solution comes a long, but I was talking about _features_, and as such, the Touch isn't even close to be the heir of the Newton, let alone a modern day pda.

Go prick a hole in that Apple-bubble, and you'll notice that products such as the Touch and the iPhone is far from being manna from heaven. At least when it comes to features and usefulness. But I guess it's better to have a sweet gui, yet barely nothing to use it for. I guess we differ that way.

No I'm not. Apparently you're to young to remember what the newton actually was capable of. Do some research instead of assembling strawmen.

Face it, this is way better then the newton. Can conneect via wi-fi to internet, download apps, listen to music , watch your movies and TV shows. can do a hella lot more then the newton could
As I said: No it can't. Yes, it has a better screen, and a better GUI for that matter, and loads more memory, but it can't do as much as the Newton. For more info, read the above and do some research.

yeah and the larger MONCRONE screen
Sigh … More fanboyish strawman nonsense.

Just because it can do MORE doesn't mean it's a Newton replacement. It needs to do the right kinds of things. That's what Tosser and Nik are saying.

Would the iPod be a music player if it couldn't play music?
