I do not understand why apple would release any type of other iPhone. What would the difference be between the one you're suggesting and the 3 models we have right now that were just released 11 days ago? You say "essentially an ipod touch with phone features"....well thats exactly what the iPhone is.

Powerbook G5? (I couldn't resist.)

I agree with John Gruber -- it's likely an iPod Touch redesign, or it's the upcoming MBP redesign.

Who is John Gruber? I knew a geezer by that name when I lived in Atlanta 5-6 years ago.

Accents, umlauts etc. are no big problem. Put your finger on a letter, wait half a second, and a menu with all the variations of the letter pops up.

Actually, in danish, w have three more letters than you guys. And they're certainly not considered as other letters with umlauts or accents, they're considered "real" letters – perhaps because we use them so much. The three are æ,ø, and å, or in capitals: Æ, Ø, and Å.

and in swedish we got three additional also, ÄÅÖ.

The quad-core is $1038. It's 45 W, too hot for the MacBook Pro. A 35 W slower quad-core for $851 is rumored to come out in Q4 2008, but since its GHz is so low (2.27 GHz), it may not go in the MacBook Pro.

It might utilize the new quad core if the optical drive is removed for heat dispersion ;)

Already there.

In the US keyboard viewer, they're already available, so shouldn't be an issue.
æ = option-apostrophe
ø = option-o
å = option-a

what i mean is an iphone that doesn't require the more expensive data plans for email and internet use over the 3g networks. it would be a more stripped down iphone as far as phone/network features go (simple calling and texting), but with all the wi-fi features of the ipod touch. i think a lot of people (myself included) would love an iphone without the expensive data plans.

Largest power draw of any notebook component.

Maybe if Apple would get on board with GPU offloading, it would help:

http://www.wired.com/gadgets/pcs/news/2008/02/bluray_power

"Any time you introduce a new technology like this, the initial products tend to be more power-hungry," McCarron says. "Once you get to a certain point, though, the industry usually starts the refinement process."

That process is actually well underway, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association. "In the first generation of laptops that had Blu-ray drives, [power drain] was an issue," a Blu-ray spokesperson said, "but that's been resolved."

The solution has come by offloading some of the decode process onto other system hardware, namely the graphics processing unit, according Dell's Zucker, who also sits on a committee of the Blu-ray Association.

"We looked at playing DVDs and Blu-ray discs, and our early data showed that it could knock [battery life] down to half when playing a Blu-ray disc," Zucker says. He also points out that the main reason we've only seen Blu-ray drives in high-end laptops to date is because you also need a high-end processor to do that decoding.

"All that's changed now, because we have decode assistance from the graphics core," Zucker says, thanks to sophisticated new graphics cards from Nvidia and ATI.

There are some Blu-ray laptops that have sufficient battery capacity for playback of two movies back-to-back on one charge, Zucker says, declining to give specifics. Two models might be Dell's XPS M1530 and Inspiron 1420, which the company claims will support 4½ hours of Blu-ray playback.

New product

new cheaper iPhone at $99 price point ... Seriously how stupid would that be ... we already have 15 gazilion people drooling over the thought of buying el chepo 8gb iphone.

with the whole psystar lawsuit thing and that i imagine they are prepping to fill the gap in their product line.. Psystar didn't matter until they decided to play on that field .... why not kick them out.

Please, Apple, give the iPod TOuch a volume rocker and the play-pause button in the earbuds. It's just wrong having to pull out the thing out of the pocket and unlock the screen to change volume or play/pause...
That was the main reason I stopped buying iPods.

Have you looked into the Samsung YP-P2?

Not trying to advertise, but it's like a touch minus Wi-fi but with bluetooth and dedicated volume buttons and a play/pause.

I'd love a touch, but damn, volume keys would be nice =\

hmmm may be apple might go back to some earler products:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pippin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macintosh_TV - Updated verson of the apple TV, or even an imac with a tv tuner

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twentieth_Anniversary_Macintosh - also more like an updated apple TV or an advance imac.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Hi-Fi - Remember this? I'm thinking more advance and a TV hook up. part of a new apple TV may be?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISight_Camera - This time much smaller, more compact. Works on both windows and mac (hey, if they want to go that aproach they said at the meeting, they will need to create a webcam for the windows side to compete with other "windows only" cameras..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_Disk_20 - This time, more vitural based, store files on the net and on your home network. Eirther in HD based or SSD based.

I don't think you get it. BECAUSE we think of them and use them as SEPARATE letters, it would be like you missing, O, I, and U, having to press option each time, so it WOULD be an issue, no matter if you are able to comprehend it or not.

You forgot the Newton - Apple PDA.

Yeah, that would be really annoying..

a cheaper -- and apparently more stupid -- iphone with less features would double the 15 gazillion who are thinking of buying the current iphone. i think it's just a matter of time before the iphone splits into two or more models. if apple offered an iphone that would run on less-expensive monthly plans, i think there would be a substantial increase in interest. for example, i don't care about doing email or internet or gps via my wireless network, i'd be content with wi-fi. if they added basic phone features (calls, visual voicemail, and texting) to what is currently the ipod touch, apple would have another hit product, guaranteed.

my guess...

Might as well put in my two cents...

Probably will get:
---
* thinner Macbook with lower price point.
* drop ipod classic altogether ( sad, but they probably will )
*

Wish we would get:

* 720x480 ipod touch ( with actual 16:9 screen ) with a 200GB harddrive instead of flash, with an component and HDMI out port so you can take your entire movie collection with you wherever you go.

* AppleTV model with DVR capability ( or finally buy out TIVO )

* wireless DVD-R or Blueray unit ( no idea how this would be done ) with batteries.

Haha, that's right. I completely forgot about that. However, if you're german, danish, swedish (just examples), it sucks writing even on a UK-keyboard :(

ah well I'm from Belgium, and yeah here it is azerty ... but i can live with a qwerty keyboard

Although unlikely, this is an interesting idea. Anyway, I for one think its premature for the optical drive to be abolished entirely...getting rid of the floppy was an easy sell and did not inconvenience anyone

It doesn't have to be abolished, just use a modular one that can be easily slid out to take a second battery. Pc laptops have had the feature on some models for ages. I think it's a great idea.
