I merely use 720x480 to match NTSC resolution and native DVD resolution. Whether or not the physical pixels are square or rectangle don't matter to me. :)

Why would you think a small tap would cause problems? Laptop/portable devices are specially engineered to take much more shock, and as we already know Apple has a keen understanding of accelerometers and can park the harddrive heads whenever a fall happens.

I agree that flash is the future, but I consider the ipod touch a step back in its current incarnation. The storage per dollar just isn't there, while harddrive densities climb while prices drop. I don't think my version of the ipod touch should be the replacement of the current touch... just a suppliment. Call it the "ipod fatboy" or something fun like that.
We can have both versions and make us both happy. :)

720x480 (NTSC) and 720x576 (PAL) is native DVD resolution but widescreen DVDs are anamorphic so if displayed within those resolutions, the image would be squished. So you'd really want 848x480 or 1024x576 to display DVDs in their native resolution and correct aspect ratio. That's why I consider DVDs to be last milleniums tech as the standard is based on old TV display standards as opposed to HDTV.

I've had several laptops and lot's of head/heartache with the hard drives. So I'm merely speaking from my own experience. Some others may have better experiences. I have been an avid advocate of flash drives long before they really existed.

It's not going to be a Mac tablet and it's not a new iMac either. It is pointless for Mac to try to make another Tablet. It sounds great, but has anyone here ever use a touch screen for daily Computer use. It is slow and really annoying to use when you use it for 8 hours a day. And for all the neat freaks, smudgy screens suck. It is more than likely a Macbook & Macbook pro and then some type of new product that every apple fan boy and girl is going to want just like the iPhone 3G. Has anyone at apple seen any of the other cell phones out there?

Maybe they will replace the Mac Mini with a Mid range media center PC that is in the $900 dollar area and can act as a DVR out of the box? Or maybe not and they will kill the Mac Mini in the next year with another Processor update on the same 667 Ghz Front side bus Motherboard.

Please no more Phones, we need newer Mini!!!!!!!

Apple Stereo Bluetooth headset for the iPhone... optimized for battery savings (AuriStream tech.)

That's my vote.

I agree. It does not need an optical drive. That will just take up room. A wireless connection to any sort of media drive just like the air would be the way to go.
And if I was going to carry around the tablet (which I think I would do, since it's a tablet), I would like for it to be as light as possible—and that means no optical drive.

I'm not necessarily saying MacBook Air-light, but a lot lighter than my 5.9 lb. iBook.

LOL, you don't get it do you. You go "1.5=2.5"
No. 1.5x larger (which = bigger) = 2.5x.

1.5x bigger = 1.0x (original size) + 1.5x = 2.5x.

LOL, it just struck that a bloke with a nick like yours are trying to claim that 1.5=2.5!!
Haha, the irony!
Only if you were right…

Hi Tosser, I think you've misunderstood the fundamental maths.

If someone makes something that's "20% bigger", then it is 1.2 times the size of the original. However, if it's "20% of the size" then it's 0.2 times the size of the original

eg: A 300gm chocolate bar that's 20% bigger is a 360gm chocolate bar... And a chocolate bar 120% bigger is a 660 g chocolate bar.

Now, "120% bigger" is obviously not the same as "20% bigger" when you see both percentages together ... but often people confuse the two meanings.
Thank you! You explained it better than I did. Explaining math concepts has never been my strong suit.:p SOLVING math problems, on the other hand… :D

Just came across this and was wondering if anyone else has seen more info or another confirmation about it...

I have seen that mock-up photo pitched earlier, I believe around MacWorld.

It's effectively a Mac UMPC and I am not sure that market, like the tablet, is one that has a great deal of growth in it.

Then again, Apple brings to the table for both things Microsoft has not been able to do, so perhaps that is what is needed to kick-start both form factors.

what happened to the patent pics of a notebook with keyboard on which the screen can slide down and become a tablet? i've seen drawings that apple patented, but i couldn't find them online. and, imho, that would be much sweeter than a straight-up tablet, cause i would want the standard notebook form as well as the touch screen.

Thanks

That looks perilously close to something that may just exist...

I think if they get the floating keyboard right like they have with the ipod/iphone then they've got a hit on their hands. That's the only reason tablets have historically been a nightmare - the stylus and keyboard interface dilemma...being able to finger touch and type on an auto-zooming keyboard should deal with that...If it's got a full OS X, a decent CPU and good graphics ability and less than £350 (in the UK) then it'll sell a million from day one..if it's more than £400 it will remain a specialist niche purchase and ship in Apple TV numbers...

I think it's a car

I've been thinking a lot about it lately, and I think Apple is probably about to release a car. There are two major reasons for this:

  1. Current car designs leave something to be desired. That seems to be Apple's specialty: find something everyone else is doing badly, and do an Apple version. Even if the Apple version doesn't quite match up to the things it's supposed to replace, it's usually special enough to attract an audience and influence everything else.
  2. Steve Jobs is probably sick of reading MacRumors, Slashdot, et al, and reading car analogy after car analogy as people compare Macs to PCs, Apple to Microsoft, iPhones to real smartphones, AppleTV to DVDs, etc. Putting in a real car would essentially make it impossible to make car analogies involving Apple that still make sense.

I'm figuring it'd come in three models:

Good - space for one person. 30mpg.
Better - space for two people. 50mpg
Best - space for four people, a dog, 16 bags of shopping, four bicycles, tents and backpacks with supplies for a week for each, and a spare tire. 100mpg.

There'd also be the iCar mini which you can carry around with you when you're not riding it.

Anyone want to speculate on pricing?

First I was laughing real hard. Now I am just scared that you might be serious...

LOL Brilliant! I'll take two.

Translation: I don't want to find proof of what I said

no, it was a while ago. I dont remember. dont try to start s*** it only makes you look immature

yeah we dont need another phone. sorry kids,

errrm no. World is NOT ready for that. I for one do not want to buy a mac if it does not have an opical drive. Not everyone has 2 or more computers in the house nor a network. and I dont want to spend 100 extra on an external one.

There are other Macs with optical drives which you can choose.

Maybe Apple is going to take the Apple TV on another step and bring out a super fantastic new flat screen TV with Apple TV built in, Decoder etc and ability to also be a computer. Even better, anyone with a Touch or iPhone could have their display shown up on the screen wirelessly...

they were talking about removing the drives from all the macs. I belive the world isnt ready for the what the air has

Same here. Apple did do a TV/computer deal back in the early 1990s. It was just around a 15" screen and ran on a Macintosh performa. Never made it, but today it could. It should have a dual TV tuner (watch one TV show, while recording another)

No, the world IS ready for it when apple says so. Remember iMac and the absence of the floppy drive? All of a sudden we didn't need one anymore even though some people bitched about if and got an external one only to find out later that it was already obsolete.

Why do you need an optical drive? I would definately NOT buy an "iPad" if it had a huge bulky noisy optical drive in it. Same goes for hard drive. I hope it's flash.

Yes, the optical drive is staying with us for years to come but not in ultra-portable devices and rightly so.

thanks man that's exactly what i was talking about!!! i think if they released this instead of a straight table it would be much more successful. if they got the wiring to work right as the screen moved. maybe if it flips all the way around...

I agree. That thing would be sweet! Here is also another link for a multi-touch imac and I know I would end up buying one of those. Better go check my wallet for the coming months...........

It is very important that Apple doesn't try to mimic Microsofts tablet attempt - which was similar to what you say above. Microsoft essentially want Windows Laptops without keyboards... and while I personally could use one in my job, I don't think they're the way to go.

As you say - it's annoying using one for 8 hours a day. I'm sure you'd say the same thing about using an iPhone as a PC for 8 hours a day.

A tablet becomes useful when you actually can NOT do certain things on it. Some things are unsuited to tablets and the last thing Apple wants is people using it for things that are much harder on a tablet, and getting disappointed and thinking of the device as "hard to use". They'd rather people say it works brilliantly and wish Apple added a few things.

(and they'd rather people still bought a Mac for those things)

A cut down tablet also means Apple can sell a cheaper device and cut down the OS. They don't need posix support, carbon, etc etc. The iPhone OS might be plenty, or they might need to expand slightly on it.

edit: and with the broad popularity of the iPhone, an Apple Tablet would do better if associated to an iPhone than a MacBookAir.
