Why do you need an optical drive? I would definately NOT buy an "iPad" if it had a huge bulky noisy optical drive in it. Same goes for hard drive. I hope it's flash.

.

because i dont want to carry a million devices around with me when i'm on a trip.

not everyone has the money to buy an expensive computer and another external drive for 100 , nor do they have 2 or more computers and a network at their home....

No, the world IS ready for it when apple says so. Remember iMac and the absence of the floppy drive? All of a sudden we didn't need one anymore even though some people bitched about if and got an external one only to find out later that it was already obsolete.

Yes, the optical drive is staying with us for years to come but not in ultra-portable devices and rightly so.

Why?

Sony fits a Blu-ray player/DVD burner in it's 3.4 lb. Vaio Z with discrete graphics and Montevina Platform.

I guess you're right. Apple isn't as competent as Sony. They can't make a light weight portable with an optical drive.

Have you people that are crying for no optical drive tried the Air solution. I have. It sucks! Sure you can load software over the Air. But you can't play video DVDs. I know, your solution is streaming media or video downloads.

1) Streaming is not always applicable on the go. Also streaming quality is very limited unless your broadband is fast and reliable.
2) Movie downloads are huge and if you want a few movies to choose from while on the go, it wastes a lot of precious HDD space on what are usually very small drives on umpc machines.

To each their own. If I want to watch movies, I watch it on my home theatre or on the go on the iPod Touch. Not on my laptop.

I agree, if movies are your thing MacBook Air is not the one for you. Maybe a portable DVD player with screen? I personally wouldn't compromise a laptop/touchpad design to be able to watch movies.

We've been watching DVD movies on computers since around 1998/1999. Time to get with the times kid

Exactly. DVDs are so last millenium. They're the new VHS. So, kid, get with the times already.

PS. I'm not disputing the fact that one can watch DVDs on their computer. I just don't understand why unless it's a HTPC.

On 7th August 2007 Apple held a keynote in which the new iMac, iWork 08 and iLife 08 were introduced.
Maybe history repeats itself this year?! :)

No offense attended to the already over populated model of Mac books. I mean come on the Mac Book (3 models), Mac Book Pro (5 or 6 Models), and then the Mac Book Air (2 Models). Enough with the Tablet and Mac Books, we need a system that sits between the Mac Mini and the Mac Pro. A $900 to $1600 Mid Range system (DVR & Media Center). And don't come back with the iMac is a Desktop Computer. I would say yes and no, it is a Mac Desktop. I don't want to pay for a display, I already have on. If they threw in a Blue-Ray Drive and PCI Video Card Graphics on a $1000 Level, it would push more Gamers to switch over and forget all the Vista hangovers.

Once again no more Phones and Laptops, Please let it be a new Mid range Desktop System!!!!!!!

The iMacs are not due for a redesign for a long time (nor are they due for an update either). iLife and iWork were titled 08 because none are coming this year. I expect them at Macworld '09 personally, with iTunes 8 finally landing (and possibly Quicktime X).

But the MacBook Pro is due for an upgrade. ;)

There are two MacBooks two MacBook Pros, and one MacBook Air. Different specs do not equal different models.

There won't be an xMac as long as Steve's alive.

But the MacBook Pro is due for an upgrade. ;)

Yes, it is:)

Although, I am getting the feeling that since both the Macbook and the Macbook Pro are getting very similar looking case designs, the two lines may merge to just "Macbook" with simply different specs.

It's not the iMacs, but the MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

iLife and iWork were named '08 because over half of 2007 had already passed.

I think you might be right. Then the laptops will go back to three line ups. The thin 13" Air and the customizable 15 and 17 variety.

Pile on experts

Sure.

I would like this to happen. The Air as the new low-end MacBook, and the MacBook Pro as the high-end. The problem is that the MacBook Air is underpowered and overpriced (simply looking at specs, not at design). It's like the Intel Atom vs. ARM. Once the MacBook Air delivers good enough specs for a MacBook price, then it is time to retire the MacBook.

But the thing is, wouldn't the MacBook be updated too? And the MacBook would perpetually stay ahead of the MacBook Air in terms of performance/$. If Apple was going to replace the MacBook with the MacBook Air, they could:
  1. Cripple the MacBook so it stays just ahead of the MacBook Air, then one day get rid of the MacBook and bump up the Air's specs.
  2. Slowly move the MacBook Air down and the MacBook up. In time, the MacBook will merge with the MacBook Pro.
In the end, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro would be almost as separated as the iMac and Mac Pro. Ultraportable components : Laptop components = Laptop components : Desktop/workstation components

I would like the future of laptops be nothing less than a MacBook Air. But I must advocate heavier and thicker laptops because lighter and thinner ones aren't there yet.

I agree, and also because nothing is coming this year. The last iLife update occurred about 18 months from the previous, as will the next.

I do not expect to see any new apps, but iMovie really needs a major upgrade now that it has been redesigned. Apple needs to incorporate a timeline option into the program, as well as more effects and better exporting.

It would also be cool if Apple added the MobileMe web gallery feature to Final Cut Pro.

What really needs the most work is iTunes, especially in regards to Movie management.

iPhoto needs some improvements, largely in the area of Event management.

You may be over thinking this. Most people are not going to think crippled, instead they will think small and cool. The Air already does everything most people want it to, it's only people who obsess about chipsets that will care. Moving the Air down market also potentially makes sense of the financial speculation.

Sure.

I think Apple is going to merge the Macbook and Macbook Pro lines with this next revamp as long as the design is the same (as the rumors suggest). The difference will simply be the internal specs.

yeah i am with the times kid (that comment right there proves you are a littrle kid) you justr want to use the computer like its 1995.

Look who's talking. Your grammar alone shows your age. As an adult, I shall show my maturity by gracefully bowing out of this useless conversation that is going too personal for my taste. I shall not waste my time any longer on any childlike comments that you most likely will post after this one.

:D

Movies are just one advantage to having a built in DVD drive.

For example, let's say you are on a plane. You need to give multiple clients an updated copy of a large amount of data which you are currently working on and constantly modifying. Total file space required is 5 GB and your clients are running a variety of windows and OS X.

With a DVD burner you burn the data to a half dozen compatible DVDs. You meet with the various clients, discuss your business, hand them the disk, and you're done. You get a raise for a job well done. You splurge and buy a blu-ray version of "Live.Free,Die,Hard" to enjoy on your flight home.

Without a DVD burner, you meet with the client, try to figure out how to get connected to their corporate wireless network which is protected with firewalls and special login accounts. You then try to figure out how to access your clients machine once you are on the network. Then you begin the painfully slow process of transferring the 5 GB of data files. You spend so much time with client one & two, that you barely have time to meet with client three. You don't meet with clients 4,5, & 6. Consequently you are fired because you are inept at meeting and supplying your clients with accurate data. You are so disgusted with the MBA that you toss it under the plane as you board!

Now don't you wish your light weight portable had a burner like the 3.4 lb. Sony Vaio Z?

iLife '09: New application to be added?

SKIMMING PLEASE. Even the Finder's better than iTunes at movies because it has Quick Look and icon previews.

I think iTunes may be redesigned like iMovie was (iTunes X / Media Me).

There may be some differences in design.

The MacBook may have a black screen border and a black underside, resembling the iMac, while the MacBook Pro would have neither of those features, resembling a fat MacBook Air.
