I dunno what he's trying to get at, but Walmart is probably the best thing that ever happen to the US economy, they really were true pioneers. Both Apple and Walmart's business models have pros and cons...but if I were to pick, I rather own Walmart. You can't say that Dell makes cheap computers, they make a wide variety of lines to satisfy all levels of customers, almost perfect product discrimination...I'd say that's rather smart.

Oh kneel to the God that is the economy! That which goes before all else, and where even the largest sweatshop supporter can receive it's highest praise!

I don't think there is anyway the prices would come down that much. Because there is no real reason for them to come down.

Regarding the Mini-Tablet. I believe that has already been done. About 2 years ago actually. Project Origami by Microsoft which was revealed as the UMPC(Ultra Mobile PC).

Screencast of the Project Origami website from 2006
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9JNgaRxMtU

The UMPC(Mini-Tablet) is also regarded as one of Microsoft's greatest failures. Because at the time of release they lacked a market, had out dated parts, and were way over priced.

The real problem of the UMPC was that Microsoft just ported their OS (XP originally) directly to the device. Hardware wise it was brilliant, but the operation system was way to lack luster.

Their are Linux devices as well such as the Nokia N800. Which is literally an Internet Tablet.

Then again the Intel Atom was just released and there have been a ton of Ultra Mobile lifestyle gadgets hitting the market.

However, if their is any company who can make a UMPC successful it would be Apple. I don't know though, on one hand it is a great way take market share. Then again it was a massive failure. It is definitely a very risky idea.

It would be more realistic for their to be revisions in the MacBook and MacBook Pro. I would love their to be a market for UMPC style devices, but I really don't think we are at that point quiet yet.

Prices won't come down that much, nor will they come down for ALL lines, IF they come down at all.

I still adamantly believe that the "smaller margins" means all-around BETTER machines for the same price. They increase the cost of production for better components with the same winning Apple style (read: no thickness increases in the MacBook Pro, thank you, but perhaps some revolutionary kick-awesomeness).

Problem is that the immense price gap between the "consumer" iMac and the Mac Pro is going to have to either be filled or shortened.

Apple NEEDS to have a cheeper computer. If you dont fell like buying an cheeper apple computer then don't. Some people cant afford a 2,000 computer,

If YOU can't afford a 2.000 dollar Mac and also can not appreciate the top notch quality of a 2.000 dollar Mac just get a Dell. Apple Inc. stands for expensive but first class quality products!
That is what separates them from other crappy computer companies like Toshiba and Dell.
I hope they will not change their image.

If Ferrari was to drop their prices to match pontiacs, having a f430 just would not be as special anymore.

You just wont get the feeling you have something awesome sitting on your desk!

I absolutely hate that attitude, where people need an ego boost by saying that they spent so much on something. Give me a break. If Apple could offer their outstanding quality to more people who may not have a ton of disposable income like you (apparently) have, that's great.

I can understand being a fan of Apple because you love their products, but not wanting them to get cheaper because you want to be special is just sad. Honestly their computer lines (especially the MBP) could use a little price reduction.

What a snob elitist!

Your analog is ridiculous. Ferrari use entirely different parts, components, manufacturing plants, designs, etc to build its cars than Pontiac.

Apple uses the exact same electronic components as Dell, Sony, Lenova, and others. Many are assembled in the exact same chinese plants.

Dell differentiates itself by an innovative custom ordering system where computers are ordered and assembled at the time the order is placed by the customer. This allows mass marketing, low inventory of product, and low prices.

Lenova specializes in the business sector building robust, quality machines, that are very durable, and dependable.

Sony and Apple focus more on unique style within the market place to differentiate themselves.

Apple primarily differentiates itself from the PC crowd with OS X.

They are all quality companies, provide excellent customer support, and there is very little difference if any in the internal HDD, Chipsets, CPU, GPU, memory, displays, etc.

A closer analog using automobiles, would be like comparing a similar model Chevrolet to a Cadillac. Both use the same GM parts, one is more stylish than the other, charges more money than the other, caters to snobs more than the other.

I do appreciate top of the line products. But sometimes you just cant get what you want. This is life, get use to it.

Apple Inc. stands for expensive but first class quality products!

Apple offers some cheep, but still high quality products. The shuffle and the mac mini. Apple TV even. You dont need to spend way over 2000 to get a decent great looking and preforming product.

in my opinion Dell's XPS series is the "apple" on the PC side. and I'm not talking about the gaming systems. The m1330 m1530 etc.

Apple did change their image in the past. Went from power PC to intel. went from mac OS to mac OSX. oh and a HUGE one...

Went from the rainbow logo to the one they have now. thats changing their image. You need to understand that compneys cant stay the same forever. they need to branch out to meet the demands of todays society. Apple helped changed that. Thats why we dont see any more badge boxes and floppy drives.

if you have that much money to buy a 2000+ mac AND a ferrari at the same time, then go ahead. You'd still be paying it off after you die!

You just wont get the feeling you have something awesome sitting on your desk!

I can get the felling from a product that wont break my bank account. Like I said top ofd the line products dont need to cost 2 grand.

I absolutely hate that attitude, where people need an ego boost by saying that they spent so much on something. Give me a break. If Apple could offer their outstanding quality to more people who may not have a ton of disposable income like you (apparently) have, that's great.

Exactly. They can do that and in my opinion they NEED to in order to match the cheep PC world.

I would be happy if the MMP went down to 1799 for just the base model. 1499 would be better but I can handel 1799.

I'm guessing the kid above is spoiled. Gets what he wants all the time thats why he has this attitude.

This is one of the main reasons why I do not believe Apple will just stick Mac OS X on a subnotebook or a tablet. I think Apple will use iPhone OS or a significantly modified version of Mac OS X.

Apple NEEDS to have a cheeper computer. If you dont fell like buying an cheeper apple computer then don't. Some people cant afford a 2,000 computer,
You do realize that over two-thirds of Apple's lineup is under $2000?

Well well...obviously I didnt really make a lot of friends with my post :p!
Im not saying I could easily afford a 2000 dollar mac. In fact I am typing this post on my 2.5 year old MBP!
I simply meant that I dont mind paying a lot of money for a great computer.
No need to hate me for that :D!
I just really sort of miss those times...back when Apple was still a little computer company and having a mac was something special.
This is just my personal opinion. So no yelling and screaming at me!
I just like being special:D!

true, and lets not start talking about all the apple defects.. for a 2k laptop to have the same or more defects as a dell or hp is not high quality

we are talking about computers here kid, and they care close enough. i was just using 2000 as a price point. learn to read.

true.

some people need toi get a life

I wonder how old .Chris is, I'm guessing somewhere in the tween age, could explain his lack of manner.

I suspect they will release some new and interesting stuff in Sept-Oct. But where they could stir the pot with consumers when it came to the iPhone, since it was such a complex device and corporation combining scheme, a tablet is NOT and they will need them to ship ASAP on announcement. If they don;t then all competitors will have cheezy rip offs ready to roll soon after the Macs are on the market... as usual.

I absolutely hate that attitude, where people need an ego boost by saying that they spent so much on something. Give me a break. If Apple could...

BUWAHAHAHA! Your overly touchy reaction is pathetic. And funny.

We can dream. Maybe if every member of MacRumors stared at these prices long enough, Steve Jobs would get that sixth sense to look at this page and correct all the prices on the Apple site to these. We can dream.

do you even know what the internal components of a computer are? the inside of a Dell or any other machine is really no different from Apple. You probably think there is a little small hidden city beneath the ocean where little Apple elves assemble Apple products using only Apple parts and each Apple product is sprinkled with pixie dust before it leaves the little hidden city of Apple
