They are engineering a subscription model for transportation. Apple, Microsoft, Google, Amazon......all want you to subscribe to their subscription based lifestyle. In the future you won’t own anything. Seriously, this is what they want and it may be what future generations want.

The first iPhone was good but not great, if Apple ever releases a car it will be ok, design wise it might be the greatest design ever but there will be problems, maybe even major ones.

what are you talking about?! the first iphone was amazing. sure, it doesn't hold up today, but it's been a minute. when it came out there absolutely nothing that could compete in any way.

Actually a subscription makes a lot of sense. Why should you own a car that you only drive less than 5% of the day? And have the expense of insurance, maintenance, registration, fueling, a garage, etc. for this low use vehicle.

It would be great to just click and app an have a vehicle show up. It might have both u-drive and self-drive and let you use it either way. When you get to where you are going, just hop out and it goes to somewhere else.

Hurry up and announce a joint venture already, sheesh!

i just want Apple Music as a default option lol

Agreed. Really happy with my Model X. Much better car than my BMW X3 or 335. Both of which collect dust since the Model X showed up. The Model X is fast, quick, silent, and goes 200 miles on $5-10 worth of electricity.
Can’t afford an X...but my 3 works and is hands down the best car I’ve ever owned. I’m realizing now a lot of families gained wealth because of the old auto industry and will stop at nothing to keep status quo..it’s just sad to see Americans(I guess) talk about German or other foreign made cars being better..we should be celebrating Tesla motors as an American success story.

Teslas aren't attractive vehicles.
Nor they are good cars either. Obviously the company knows how to create an electric motorized vehicle. But their lack of experience creating cars is hurting them. The only reason its popular is because of their marketing.

I think the model S is one of the nicest looking cars I’ve ever seen (can’t afford one, though)

Tesla has terrible interiors, all the way up to their more expensive models.

Teslas aren't popular either. The brand may be popular, but they hardly sell any cars.

Tesla spends nothing on marketing lol. What you see is people who actually own Tesla’s promoting..if Tesla has a budget for that much more people would own one.

Apparently Bloomberg thinks so; I mean, what else would the interior/exterior vehicle vp of engineering—whose previous positions were at Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley Motors, and Aston Martin—be working on? He’s obviously designing the interior/exterior of the new MBP keyboard.

working on seats for the spaceship campus which may be the vehicle all apple employees may leave earth when the earth is no longer sustainable? may be?

Yet some still refuse to believe Apple is making a car.
I’m fascinated by people who think it’s inconceivable Apple could be working on an autonomous vehicle but yet totally believe they’re working on the brains of autonomous vehicles. OK this is Apple we’re talking about. A company I would argue is more known for its hardware chops than software (especially the type of software that would run an autonomous vehicle) and a company not known for developing technologies for other people’s products. Sure they have iTunes on Windows and Apple Music on Android but that’s not the same as developing an OS for someone else’s hardware. And those who claim Apple is working on car software only never say who this software is for. All the big players in the automotive space are doing their own things. They’re not looking to Apple (or Google) for anything. So who is Apple developing this software for if not their own hardware? I still think this car project is working towards a ride sharing type service that will use Apple designed autonomous electric vehicles.

current Tesla Model 3's will be software upgraded to do this very thing.

I don't think they can. I own a Model X with Full Self Drive and the latest MCU. It is considerably more limited than one might believe. Not that that is a bad thing, it's not. It is great to be able to supervise the system for mile after mile of highway driving and even in stop and go traffic have the car handle slowing, speeding up, maintaining safe distance, etc. And with each new release the software gets better and better.

But the current systems are SAE Level 2 Autonomy where the system can say "I can't figure out what to do. You human, take over". This is a is long way off from Level 5 where the human in the vehicle is optional. Even today, it still does not detect traffic signals, temporary lane changes, etc. Let alone understand stalled cars, roadblocks, police and emergency vehicles coming up from behind, etc.
