Who wants to join me to sue microsoft with all the pc manufacturers together for not advertising that windows takes a couple of GB of my hard drive with which my computer was advertised?

Dumb.

The issue is clearly a matter of the ratio of free space to the space the OS takes up, to which the fierce majority of windows products don't have an issue with considering 80% of windows devices out in the wild at least have 64GB+

I hope he wins! All mobile phone companies do this and it sickens me! Apple as well! Why make a great os that takes up so much space and advertise otherwise of offerings of 16gb, 64gb and 128gb when the OS is gonna take up 4-5 or so GB. Why dont they just add an additional 5-10gb allocated just for OS needs and leave the storage we were promised?!?!

You were promised whatever amount of storage you actually have, you don't have to put the OS on it. I'm sure there's a way to take it off.

They should target Microsofts surface tablets, now that OS takes a hefty part of your storage. :roll eyes:

Duh, It has always been that way, on most phones and computers it will take a part of the storage medium.

But surface tablets do have a disclaimer that their OS takes a large chunk of the device's storage. And that's the point. iOS didn't used to take so much space and thus no disclaimer necessary. But now it's a big fat pig just like Windows. It needs the same disclaimer.

While this can be argued, Android phones support storage expansion via micro sd, while iPhones do not. A user can easily drop a 64gb or 128gb in an android device and call it a day while with iPhones, if you got the meager 16gb, you are forced to delete things to make room for content.

Two wrongs do not make a right.
Tell me what is going to be useable when I buy from you. How would you feel if when you went to buy your bag of flower that the weight of the bag was included, and it was significant?

16gb in today's smartphones is silly, especially ones with non upgradeable memory like Apple's iOS devices.

This is what boggles my mind!! Why is this a problem for people? You just don't buy it, that's it! If it won't sell, Apple will just drop it. I knew what storage I wanted, and I went' for the one that suits my needs. 16 GB is out of the question for me. For folks who only use it for few apps, internet browse and emails, or the ones who store things on the cloud services it's a different matter. You have the choice to have a larger storage, why deny the choice of a little cheaper handset to the ones that a large storage doesn't matter?

They Can't !! That's the whole point. Either you buy a very expensive 64 or 128 Gb iPad or iPhone, or you're stuck with it. And since you cannot put a SD card in it, and that's the reason, you're again stuck !!! 23% of your storage is A LOT !!!!!!
They're trying to have you buy a very expensive device. They do not care about their customers at all. All they care about, is MONEY !!!

Yes but they are saying in the article that because people don't have the space they thought they did that they are then pressured to buy more at key moments so they don't miss recording special moments. They seem to be implying that Apple did this to try to sell storage upgrades, but that's not possible.

"Using these sharp business tactics, defendant gives less storage capacity than advertised, only to offer to sell that capacity in a desperate moment, e.g., when a consumer is trying to record or take photos at a child or grandchild's recital, basketball game or wedding," alleges the plaintiffs in the case."

That's great. Learn to buy what you need instead of snap judgements based on short term thinking.

In short, stop being a mindless consumer and buy what you actually need.

In 2015, GB is the new MB, we all know that.
Nevertheless, 4 GB is a lot of stuff.

iOS usually come in at around 4 GB or so, so a 16 GB device is really
gonna have about 12 GB usable, you & I both know that already.
But your avererage Johnny JustGotAnIThingForChristmas doesn't.
When he sees "16 GB" on the box, that's what he thinks he has.

Now, for legal purposes, it may say somewhere in the packaging that only
12 out of the 16 GBs is available, but the misrepresentation scenario is still there.

But what about all the Android phones out there, my friend has a LG G3 16gb or something, with Android and stock apps (you can't remove) it has like 8gb free!!!!! oh but you say MicroSD Card, nope some apps won't install or run from an SD Card ....

I have seen loads of people with the update icon on iPhones though but can't install it and having to go through and delete music / pictures / apps just to install iOS which is ridiculous.

why oh why did they not ditch the 16gb SKU for the 32gb

32/64/128 makes far more sense than 16/64/128.

This would be a decent argument if the iOS updates were OTA only. But since they aren't I don't see why these guys are taking on the expense of fighting an obvious losing battle.

You're seeing the legal system be used as a PR tactic...par for course in the tech industry.

if only the US had policies like some European countries that if the plaintiff loses, then he/she would have to pay the the defendant's legals fees. This would clear out so many cases in our court system and deter people from bringing forth frivolous lawsuits such as this.

When I saw the base model iPhone 6 was still 16gb I was slightly embarrassed for apple, 32gb really should be the entry point these days. It really pulls into sharp focus that for lots of people 16gb is not an option so you are forced (in the UK ) pay £80gb for an extra 48gb of storage, when you consider the cost of this is probably less than £10gb I can understand why Apple could be accused by some of using 'sharp practise' and come under criticism for their product options.

When the 6s gets released I think apple would be wise to drop the 16gb and kick off with 32gb as their entry level.

Hmmm, when I got my new iMac with a 3TB fusion drive, I noticed it actually has 3.2TB of space, maybe I should sue Apple for giving me more hard drive space than advertised. Geez, thanks Apple. :D

So, the 16GB makes them no money? It's cheap, now?

Why don't you guys actually think out your premise?

The point isn't that the OS takes up SOME space, it's that it takes up to 23.1% of advertised space. Did your Windows OS take up 231GB of the 1TB drive that came with your PC? Didn't think so... ;)

Um, no. Your comparison is wrong, that’s why. If your PC actually had 16GB of storage, then yes, it would be 25%. If your PC has 1TB of storage, it’s 0.4%. The OS stays 4GB, it doesn’t just magically expand when your HD gets bigger.

Worst part is that Apple continues to sell 16gb devices, even in the latest generation.

Yes I know they made the 64gb upgrade cheaper by eliminating 32gb, but they should have made 32gb standard and then offered the other upgrade options to 64/128.

16gb in today's smartphones is silly, especially ones with non upgradeable memory like Apple's iOS devices.

8 GB iPhone 5C!!!! Gah!

Sickens you? You need to get a hobby.

This is an abuse of our legal system to bring such a suit. I agree that Apple's memory storage scheme is ridiculous from a consumer standpoint, but if we don't like it, we can always buy Android or Windows.

I totally agree. i don't have a problem with an OS requiring more resources, but Apple should match the new requirements with hardware. The entry level should have been 32GB. I'm sure the 6s will start there.
