Seriously?

It's unskilled? You really think that any joe schmoe can go design something for use by the masses that also looks good (and is designed to be easily usable). Keep in mind the best products not only make themselves very practical for use, but also appeal to the mass market looks wise (sorry, looks count when it comes to marketing. If you make an ugly product or one that does not appeal to the market you are selling it to, it *will* hurt your sales. And it's best to create something a bit unique so it stands out, but if you can't, least make it appealing looking to the market you are aiming at).

You also have to keep certain specs in mind in how everything will fit inside or how big a screen you have to accomodate.

Yeah, I'm sure everyone can do that. I'm sure glad Jobs (and most smart companies really) don't subscribe to your theory. I could imagine the clunky, ugly, unusable crap they'd make if they just hired any random joe schmoe to design their products (I mean, it's unskilled, just make sure they show up on time for their shift).

Please tell me my sarcasm meter isn't working and you were being sarcastic (I'll admit I've been known to mistake good sarcasm for seriousness on the net).

I couldn't believe that comment when I read it. Ignorance. I agree, Industrial Design is an extremely difficult field, involving engineering with regards to computer design. Stanford has an excellent program, with an extremely difficult approval process. Dismissing Ive as nothing is ludicrous. Jobs may have the ideas, but it has always been Ive who has brought his concepts to life. Ive has won more awards in industrial design than Jobs has with his position as a CEO. From the eMac to the iPhone to the GENIUS interiors of the "Mac Pro" systems (have you ever opened up a "Mac Pro"? Unlike a Windows based system, everything is easily accessible with every detail well thought out). Jobs and Ive have been a fantastic duo that have brought Apple from a near bankrupt company in the '90's to a business powerhouse. You can't argue that fact.

I'm very intrigued as to what this is.

Here's my thoughts on what's been discussed:

1. Jobs stepping down would be absurd over a blunder like this. It's a serious problem, but not quite firing your breadmaker serious.

2. Ive stepping down would be a more reasonable solution, I believe. He seems tapped out. Aside from the unibody MacBook Pros his designs have been exactly the same since 2005/2006. The iPhone/Touch has mutated slightly, the iPad is just an enlarged version of the iPhone/Touch in more ways than one, the iPod has changed shape a few times, the Mac Pro hasn't changed at all and the iMac has gone from white plastic to aluminum. This isn't to say his designs are bad, but they could use some new ones. Ive leaving wouldn't appease the problem though.

3. As for appeasing the problem, a recall is too hefty. They should announce the release of the software update for that very same day as the conference. Even holding it back this long has been ridiculous, and I don't even have an iPhone 4. Apple should announce that they will continue to monitor user feedback, and if the software update doesn't prove successful, they will work with the affected customers and replace their phones.

4. What I would love to happen, but probably won't, is the announcement that the iPhone will soon be available for other service providers.

white iphone availability announcement lol

There better be some mention about this.

why would they hold a big press conference if they were just going to give away free bumpers. a simple letter could have done that. this has to be something much bigger.

how hard would it be to just replace the antennae at a Genius Bar (or by mail for those who don't live close to an :apple: store)? seems like it would be a pretty painless way of fixing the problem, assuming that this only affects a small percentage of iphone customers.

I'm just really hoping they deal with the proximity sensor issue as well. The antenna has gotten a lot of press, but the sensor is also an issue that I'm worried is not fixable. Did they move the sensor to put in the camera? It's made my iPhone barely functional as a phone. If they don't deal with it, I'll be forced to return.

I personally have been through 3 iPhone 4s now.... all of them have the antenna issue and all of them have the proximity sensor issue. Also... the bumper cases are lame because they make it so that you can only use certain headphones and charger connectors due to the size of the holes....

LAME

Thanks,

Lying troll.

The antenna issue is clearly a manufacturing defect and not a design defect.

1) Not all iPhone 4 suffer from the antenna issue.
2) When exchanged for a different iPhone 4 the issue vanishes in many cases
3) No design changes have been made between phones that work and phones that do not work.

My guess would be that phones suffering from this issue were missing some sealant over the antenna.

vote +1 for this

but, of course, nothing will cure or satisfy the haters and hypochondriacs

LoopInsight, Engadget and others are reporting that Apple will be holding a press conference this Friday. The topic of discussion, of course, is the iPhone 4 which has received much press over the past few weeks regarding a signal loss issue when it is held in certain ways. A Consumer Reports article reignited discussion of this issue earlier this week.

hahahah they will announce that they will recall all the iphone 4 sold so far :D

have friends in high places and have confirmed this to be true. They are relocating the antenna from the bottom of the phone to the top as well as fixing some software issues. There will be a full recall. All iPhone 4's that were in Apple's warehouses were sent back to China. Could take up to 90 days for the recall process to be complete.

I thought I read somewhere that the FCC requires the cell phone antenna to be on the bottom to keep the radiation source as far from the head as possible.

You obviously have never worked for a technology company, otherwise you'd know that bugs happen. No product is perfect. What makes the difference is what the company does about... and we're going to find that out Friday.

What a chucklehead you are. UGH!

Did you use the word chucklehead?

People need to put parental controls on their computers. Bedtime Popeye!

Is no one experiencing proximity sensor problems? This, to me, is a bigger problem than the signal issue. I don't grapple my phone like a primate while talking on it or using it otherwise, the biggest problem is putting my calls on hold with my face. I, then, have to smash the phone against my face so the proximity sensor doesn't malfunction.

YES!!!

In fact I don't think I am experiencing antenna issues at all. I can't imagine a few dropped calls being more annoying than this proximity sensor problem. My ear does anything from putting the person on hold, mute, speaker, even merging the call with other people in my contact list that I don't want to talk to!

This is now one of the major top level news stories over at the much-visited Drudge Report.

It's getting out of hand... Apple better get some control of this!

Wall Street Journal reporting that a full recall is unlikely.

One more time to piss of all those apple fanboys.

My name is Steve Blow Jobs and Im here to talk about my latest nightmare iphone 4. I take my following statements back

1) This is a breakthrough design
2) the most beautiful
3) The biggest thing after original iphone
4) Calling the dumb ass designer Johnny( whatever his ****in name is ) Ive during announcement
5) Just dont hold it that way
6) All phones lose signal when you hold it like when my Jhonny Ive holds my dick when he gives me my bjob !!. ( I hate that su%%%%er now).

Im sorry, i ****KKKKed up. If I can replace my liver, I can replace this damn ****KKSin antenna that ****KKKin Johnny Ive designed in no time. Sorry. He made me get into to bumper business. I will make sure i will dump him. I aint getting enough sleep. I promise. I ****kkkkkin forgot to maintain quality control coz I was loosin sleep over android. I cant believe their stk price more than double of my beloved AAPL and their phones are selling as hot cakes. How can that happen. I mean I make I devices and I cant take this. I wIll wIn thIs. i i i i i i i fusksked up.
Sadly, this wasn't funny the first time you posted it.

I was pulling for you the second round...but no.

To all the people stating they don't have the problem or the problem only effects a small group of users ...

Has anyone noticed the Apple discussion boards? It is sure interesting to see the following stats for a phone that has just been out for about 21 days.

http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=201

Discussion Board Stats:
iPhone4: 967,944 Views, 3,850 Topics, 38,587 Messages
iPhone3GS: 914,755 Views, 14,806 Topics, 88,783 Messages
iPhone3G: 447,613 Views, 23,952 Topics, 143,968 Messages
iPhone: 119,706 Views, 5,456 Topics, 25,961 Messages

Unbelievable that a phone only out for about 21 days has more views than a phone out for a year, or a phone out for 2 years or even a phone out for 3 years. Also notice that with just 3,850 Topics the iPhone4 Board has almost half of the Messages that the 3GS Board has while the iPhone 3GS Board has almost 5X the Topics.

If Apple issues a voluntary recall, I wonder how many people saying the antenna issue does not affect me will exchange their iPhone4?

I hope Apple does the right thing this friday.

On the subject of Jonny Ive, he's the only one that can get Jobs to order Apple to make an aesthetic decision instead of an engineering one, remember that a Professor in Sweden predicted this problem two weeks before the phone came out, Apple's engineers were dead set against this design but Jobs took Ive's design over the engineer's concerns...

Lying troll.

Actually, my experience so far. Probably going for a third exchange.

First iPhone 4: 5 bar no internet issues
Second iPhone 4: prox sensor issue, occasional internet hiccup.
Both have death grip issues.

Didn't have those problems with original iPhone or 3Gs. Ever.

I call B.S. FCC rules state the cell antenna has to be furthest away from the users head, i.e. at the bottom of the phone.

Quit posting B.S.
