iPhone 4 recall: after it looses the signal iOS 4.01 will magically call again, re-call, boom! You will be reminded how to properly hold the iPhone while the signal is back again, and even do a facetime session via wi-fi with an apple care representative while you wait. It's going to be magical, a new revolution, it's that simple!

I have a comment and a question

Comment: Every discussion regarding the iPhone.has many many anecdotal reports of either someone who drops calls, someone who dissent drop calls, someone who doesn't care, someone who loses a couple bars when they hold the phone this way or that way, etc etc.

Enough of that! We get it. We all have our own experiences with the issue and we all interpret it our own way! So stop it!

Question: when was the last time apple called an actual press conference? Ever?

New poster, hi. Now:

I don't think the death grip affects wi fi, which is how Jobs was connected at WWDC. Also, since the earliest Iphones were received on June 23, everyone who has an Iphone is within the 30 day return period! So you and every one else who is pissed off about this can just return your phone and move along. Problem solved! I'll just keep mine in it's case -- like most people would have done anyway -- and enjoy the fact that all of this is really a non-issue.

Some of you guys really hack me off!

I admit that the press is going to town with apple over the signal issue, but thats not to say it isnt true or happening on some of the iphone4's.

If you are lucky enough to have a good phone and live in a good signal area, then I for one am very happy for you. But if you live in a poor reception area or travel and may enter into a poor reception area then it is a very real issue.

Now you could hold it in a different way or as suggested buy a case. But you do not buy a brand new car and spray it a different colour the next day. You do not buy a brand new house and reclad the outside to make you living in it feel better.

This is a phone, and before a better screen or extra features they have to get the basics right. The only reason why so many people have gone on about this is due to the fact that apple have burried their heads. People are waiting for apple to bring a resolve to this issue but I bet people are not as much in a hurry when the iphone 5 comes out or at least wont sell their mobiles as fast on ebay. Every day this so called "non issue" goes on apple will loose faith from alot of people... and not just the ones who post here. Apples reputation is one of its key selling points..

So.. some have the issue and have a right to complain, some do not have the issues for what ever reason and they have the right to say so... but dont go telling people its a non issue... when clearly it is!!

And before you ding dong back... with some useless dribble... I have an iphone 4, it doesnt always suffer the drop but in selected areas it does I will wait like many to see what apple suggest before I rant how good or bad apple are... after all its not just about the fault now... its how they resolve it!

Why some think that a recall is bad for the owners?
I will always welcome an improved unit that will have better condition.

In actual recalls the final results most of the times show a low customer participation. Not sure why, but it happens.

Consumer Reports in located in Yonkers, NY. What is the reception like there on AT&T?

I'm hearing very little from anyone outside of AT&T who are having a problem.

Is this a real problem or is it a matter of people blaming poor reception in some areas in the US or the UK on the iPhone 4?

I'm on O2 in the UK and I get the reception problem with my iPhone 4. I had no reception issues in the 2 years I had my iPhone 3G or on my previous phone, the Nokia N95. You can't pin the blame for this on the networks.

I just rearranged the title of this thread...

Apple Friday Press Conference on Holding iPhone 4

ALERT: NEW KILLER iPHONE TECHNICAL PROBLEM

I've just discovered that when I tried to take pictures they're all black! Yes, I've got my finger over the lens, but really, this is such a huge technical flaw - I demand a recall! And a public flogging for Apple! And don't try to tell me how to hold my phone... how could they let this product onto the market... rant, rant, rant...

(sound of tiny violin playing)

Mashable had a great article on what Apple needs to do.

1. Acknowledge That the Antenna Problem Is Real
2. Go into the Technical Details
3. Roll Out the Software Update
4. Make the Bumpers Free
5. No Matter What, Don’t Issue an iPhone 4 Recall

Apple's approach to business is nothing todo with technical details. It is about the relationship with the customer, almost to the point of being a service.

Apple will keep it sweet and simple:
1. Acknowledge the problem
2. Roll out a program for replacement iPhone 4 handsets - no questions asked, Apple will contact customers to arrange a replacement sent to them before returning the defective phone.

Unlike previously this winter sees the appearance of the Windows mobile phones and so Apple nolonger have the luxury of leaving their customer base dissatisfied with their experience.

Spoken like the worst kind of Apple fanboy - A phone that cannot make calls because you hold it the way 90% of people hold their phones, is NOT a hardware defect - it's a feature!!!

Haven't heard that one yet.

Ho hum

For me a free bumper is not the option. I did not buy a £600 phone to put a crappy looking 20p bit of rubber on it.

I look after my iPhones, always have and always will and I’ve never encased it in any of the awful protective cases - bumpers included.

Come to think of it apple have never made a case for the iPhone so why start now…..Unless of course they already knew there was a need for a bumper!

but everyone knows O2 are rubbish and have one of the slowest networks out of everyone else. Vodafone Baby :D

It seems that most people, like me, are worried about the implications a recall would have on the white iPhone.

Heh.

I am curious as to why no one ever mentions the wifi drop Steve experienced when he introduced iPhone 4 for the first time. He blamed the journalists wifi-spots, but they all seemed to work and so did the iPhone 3Gs. So maybe Steve was holding the phone the wrong way during the presentation.

Well, Apple could gut most of the parts from returned iPhones and put them in refurbished iPhones for the new few years.

Apple HAS TO recall the devices. Otherwise, Verizon and everyone else is just to run endless ads point it now. I mean quite frankly the consumer reports article is where the damn broke. So many people base their decisions on consumer reports.

And the signal issue is just so different for different people. I had a friend over last night in the death grip, his bars will only drop by 1 or two (mine will go down to one bar), his data rates were what was most effected. In the death grip he had a 10 fold drop in upload and a 4 times drop in download.

I would imagine, they rolled out the "iPhone 4.5" that we have heard about and seen if any consumer complained about the proximity sensor (which my friend has) and the dropped signal. Since the have found this model worked, they decided to go with the recall now since they have something to actually give to people.

I would imagine, they never wanted to give away bumpers because they decided a long time that bumpers were not going to be the solution.

Edit- If they don't recall it (or fix it with software) ... i am more than likely going to return it.

This has been mentioned, like every other possible nuance, a million times. You haven't been paying attention.

Im with you on that. I've been with O2 since the beginning of time (think that was BT Cellnet) and no reception problems until iPhone 4.

Flash karma? Mwahaha.

Announce you're putting Flash on your devices, Steve and it'll buy you another couple of weeks to sort out this mess.

I said from the first leaked image that I hated the new rim design... no one listens to me though.. I'm just a designer.

Oh, and stop making those white-background videos with your employees almost masturbating over your new products.. it's becoming embarrassing now.

mis·quote [mis-kwoht]
-verb (used with object), verb (used without object)
1. to quote incorrectly.
-noun
2. a quotation that is incorrect.

Misquote is not something that can be "strong" or "weak". It's either true or false. Don't hide behind semantics. The implied meaning of the "quote" you attributed to Jobs is incorrect and something he didn't say.

"You're holding it wrong" implies that Jobs thinks it's acceptable to dictate how someone would hold a phone, as if it was in the user manual and the user is an idiot for not following directions. This is the reason that anti-Apple people have run away with this. It makes it seem like he said something he didn't.

"Avoid holding it in that way" simply implies that if you're having problems do this to avoid it. It doesn't have the same callous, patronizing meaning as the former "quote".

Strange, he refuses to recognize this.

If I hit the quote button here, edited what you said an made an argument based on my changes would you call me out for it? I bet you would.

Without a doubt. :)

That's because you live in an area where a 20-30dBm drop doesn't effect you. Congratulations, you figured out something that was known two weeks ago.

Nothing is confirmed - the problem might be due to other variables involving signal processing issues within the 950/1800 Mhz band, and/or a manufacturing defect with a certain batch of phones, and/or a software switching issues within low signal areas while held in hand, etc.

Even within low signal areas, my iPhone has yet to exhibit these reception problems.

I will always welcome an improved unit that will have better condition.

In actual recalls the final results most of the times show a low customer participation. Not sure why, but it happens.

A recall would be welcome, although it would likely be a silent recall, whereby Apple offers to swap out phones to those experiencing problems.

Bumpers will likely be offered, while those who use cases may opt to keep their functioning phones.

Evidently, not everyone who owns one is experiencing problems - no apparent need for a "Total Recall," as things stand.

So either a press conference to explain nothing is wrong or a demo on how to hold the phone properly......

Heres hoping they have the balls to admit something is wrong, take it on the chin and then move on. This incident will then be forgotten about and we can go back to rumors of iphone 5's and new imac releases.
