Then why are iPhone 4 owners having the same issues on Vodafone? :p

Just had a play with a vodafone UK iPhone 4 and couldn't replicate the issue... No idea if it's the handset or the network... or my lack of conductivity...!

Call me stupid, but one tiny thing putting me off moving from O2 to vodafone is that they put "Vodafone UK" as the operator name, and there's no room for any of the icons on the menu bar! After the 3G symbol, the loading spinner was pushed past the clock to the other side. Weird.

The antenna issue is clearly a manufacturing defect and not a design defect.

1) Not all iPhone 4 suffer from the antenna issue.
2) When exchanged for a different iPhone 4 the issue vanishes in many cases
3) No design changes have been made between phones that work and phones that do not work.

My guess would be that phones suffering from this issue were missing some sealant over the antenna.

Very likely the case.

STEVE JOBS
Announcement - Yes, there was an antenna issue. We found a way to fix it and any new iPhones purchased will be fine.
For existing customers, you may pick between a bumper case or $25 to spend on apps in the iTunes store. You must claim before July 31.

:apple:

Some of you people here really don't know Apple at all do you

Here's how it will go:

Jobs (or if he's too scared, someone media guy) will introduce the audience and thank them for coming.

He'll say something like 'Before we get started, I just wanna share a few stats with you that we think are really cool.'

(shows some stats on iPhone 4 sales numbers to keep the shareholders happy)

Then he'll say something like 'there has been a few rumors going around that there's a problem with the iphones magical antennas. Well the folks at Apple looked into it, and it turned out to be a problem with the networks, and to help combat it we feel we want to give people a free bumper. This helps to improve the network performance, as it would on ANY phone' (obviously this is ********* but its Steve - the guy's made of the stuff!).

Now he will say how Apple don't NEED to do it, but the want to to make everyone's phone 'magical'.

Then he'll go into game center and white iPhone to try and make them forget that they didn't offer a recall ;)

There will be no recall. This is A-P-P-L-E. The same guys that said there was nothing wrong with the 27" iMac. That the MacBook Air was 'strong'. That the Mac Pro doesn't need updating (or a price reduction). That their international stores aren't more expensive than the US store.

It's time to take a moment to realize that maybe, just maybe Steve isn't a god....that he's the same guy that was fired from Apple for screwing up.

(Watch 'The Pirates of Silicone Vally' -- you'll see my point).

Bottom line:

A recall would cost Apple upwards of $3 billion.
Giving a free bumper to every serial number would cost about $200 thousand.

Go figure. :D

(Disclaimer: THIS IS AN OPINION. IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT THAT WORD MEANS, DO NOT QUOTE MY POST!)

First person talking sense about this. Finally.

Lets hope its a proper fix

I for one will be happy for a fix to worse reception than 3G and ridiculous 'no sim card installed' message every day. This phone is faulty and so are many other peoples. Money back isnt a fix as someone else has my 3g. Its got to be replacement

Yeah, but apple will NEVER give out anything for free, in my opinion they will either try to exterminate all left-handed people or offer them a full refund. ;)

Are you joking? $3 billion? Nah, more like $1 billion, maybe less. The bumpers cost about 10 cents to make also.

"events" are new product announcements.

"press conferences" are damage control.

I think that they've halted production to a trickle, to stem the flow of bad units into the market while they get to varnishing those metal strips.

Also, this event is conspicuously close to:

a) the Consumer Reports announcement

b) directly after the release of their misdirecting 4.1 beta "fix" which was found to be just that, misdirection.

Finally we might get some sincerity and truth out of Apples collective mouth.

If it is just an opinion, why do you start with "Here's how it will go:" ?
Anyway, could happen that way or not.
But you are writing like this was something special about "A-P-P-L-E".
Is there ANY company that woul act different? I don´t think so, cause this is not a kind of socialism. Companies like to keep their money. Companies like to keep problems down.

After having refunded $200 to each early adopter in 2007, I would beg to differ.

Not to mention, this press conference will be taking place four days before their quarterly earnings report.

That is brilliant. :D:D

Are you joking? $3 billion? Nah, more like $1 billion, maybe less. The bumpers cost about 10 cents to make also.

Using my terrible maths, if iSuppli billed the material costs of the 16 gig at $187. Lets round that off to $200 taking into account the 32 gig

Guessing there is at least 2.5 million i4hones out there, that’s $500 million for an upfront figure.

Naturally all those returns are going to get refurbished and put back into the market as replacements, probably with a varnished antenna, so they'll recoup at least 75% of that figure? Taking into account labour, shipping and pressing all those new varnished antennas. So this debacle might cost them say ... $125 million?

I hope...

everyone who has issues with the new iPhone is able to get a new one that works. The software fix reminds me of what happened with the yellow screen for the current iMacs. This lack of recognizing design flaws on Apples' part is becoming more than disappointing, it's disturbing.

If I were Steve Jobs, I'd rethink outsourcing the build of my product and adding a lot more people in R&D. They're making stupid amounts of money now - there is no excuse.

If that's all they mention it's really a kick in the you-know-whats. But I wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't at least mention the antenna issue/non-issue.
