Hang on? The issue doesn't affect you? Then what problem does your phone have? Why would you return a phone you love that has no problem that you can replicate? That's like me saying I'm gonna return my flawless 27" iMac because some iMacs have problems.

It certainly does. I can replicate the issue. It doesn't affect me majority of the time as I'm right handed, but it is there. I do hold the phone in my left hand as its sometime more comfortable and it affects my browsing speeds. Sure I could just hold it normally, but then I'm constantly thinking "Oh don't hold it like that or it won't work!" cause naturally sometimes I do hold it in my left hand. It's really bugging to keep thinking that I have to hold a £500 phone in a certain way to have it work. I personally don't think thats acceptable. So therefore if Apple fix it, sure I'll happily get it fixed. If not then I'll sell it. Also I have a bumper on when I'm at home. Sure I could just keep it on all the time but I bought the phone, like many others expecting to be able to use as is, without the need for a case. I bought the case for protection (Its done a mighty damn good job. Not a scratch on it so far) not to make the phone perform as advertised (without a bumper)

So we'll see what Apple does tomorrow.

So be safe in the knowledge that you are protected from the likes of Apple who think they can treat customers like idiots!

Dude... why so bitter? There's a problem with the phone and by the looks of it they are going to fix it... so I guess your safe from companies like Apple that care and fix their mistakes? Be reasonable! UGH!

You can return it if you live in the UK. You have 30 days within purchase date to do it. And you are also protected by the Sales of Good act that you are entitled to a full refund due to Apple selling goods unfit for purpose. In this case its the ability to make & receive calls as described. As is well documented now this is due to a hardware fault.

So be safe in the knowledge that you are protected from the likes of Apple who think they can treat customers like idiots!

Thank you. I had read elsewhere that it was only 2 weeks. I bought it on the 24th so I have until 24th July to return it? Like i posted earlier, I'm waiting to see what the software update, and press conference bring. If the **** hits the fan then I'll give my store a call and see what they say about returning it, or try going in store, If not ill just sell it.

Did you also get this invite?

I like this one better...

Makes no sense at all. If it is only some IP4s that suffer, how come every proper test (Anandtech, CR, Antennasys) has found that the iPhone(s) used has the problem? What are the chances of none of them getting a good one if there are only a few bad ones? And how come every test has come back with the same results as the other tests?

Bottom line: They all suffer from the issue. Get used to it.

those three tests tested a total of 5 phones

It'll be interesting to see what they say. I hope they prove me wrong, but I'm guessing with the arrogance levels at Apple it'll not be much more than a talking up of the new firmware and a talking down of the problems.

I'd like to see them tackle the problem properly, at least offering a free bumper to anyone who's already bought an iPhone 4, giving details of a minor hardware modification on all future models and a free exchange program for anyone who wants to try the newer revision.

Sadly I expect it'll be more along the lines of.... 'No-one needs video on their iPod.... or firewire... or Blu-ray... or a phone signal... !'

Not if you bought it from a carrier - O2 confirmed my 2 week return/contract lock-in period was up last Thursday :( Would like to know if Apple's 30 return would be relevant through O2?

As the last poster said, in the UK Apple's/02s return window is irrelevant. You are protected by the Sale of Goods Act. There is ample evidence that this phone has reception issues. You should be able to return your phone under the Sale of Goods Act for a full refund within 6 months of purchase without any problems.

If the retailer gives you problems just ask for a letter on company paper stating that they are refusing you your legal rights under the SOGA. You will probably find they change their tune very quickly.

Yes - and 5 out of 5 had the problem - which suggests it is highly unlikely that it is just a case of a few bad Apple's wouldn't you agree?

Those good ones you seem to think exist must be very few and far between...

"the arrogance levels at Apple" -- one little curt email from SJ -- not even to you -- and you are scarred for life?

you expect them to develop the product with the features that meet your little vision of the world and if they don't, they are arrogant? what a laugh...quit being a victim...you are simply just not a customer for their product...go buy something else.

I'm hoping for a recall on all iPhone 4 models for them to fix the issue. I was not planning on using any case with this new phone as I like the look of it naked.

However I did buy an Apple bumper case to test them out and they are rubbish. They dont fit tight around the phone, they slide about and dust collects very quickly around the inside edges.

Why are people willing to accept free bumpers but still have a broken phone? Idiots.

Apple should recall the iPhones and fix the issue properly and I dont care if it costs them $2-3 billion to do it. They announced that they had around $15 billion profits recently so they would still have plenty left to spend. Their quality control in the past few years has been disgraceful.

I was in my local shopping centre this morning where I usually get full 3G signal, like I did with my 3GS. I've only had the phone for a few days so you can imagine my reaction when I went there today to be greeted with GPRS coverage!! Even then it wasnt stable. The signal kept flicking between 1 bar of Edge, 1 bar of 3G and then back to GPRS where it remained for the majority of the time.

Yeah, seriously Porco. You expect them to develop a phone you can use while you're holding it? Your narrow world-view isn't welcome here. If we wanted phones we could use with our hands, we'd be buying Androids. :p

+1
This is insane to accept a bumper as a fix...first it is not a fix and it generates more profits to Apple...if people are ready to get those bumper as a fix I would be Steve Jobs I would make sure next year another HW issue occurs and release a 29$ accessory to fix it...Like a super high glare screen on the iPhone 5 leading to massive complaints...then I would release a screen protector alleviating all the glare...Apple wins.

It’s just a simple press confrerence and ppl and all the press is haiing it as a major event. It is not.

Apple is bowing down to the pressure of the raging Android fanboiis and the press while the majority of normal iphone users around the globe is being happily unaffected by the issue.

I really can't see how they are going to fix this on phone they've already sold?? I'm think on buying the phone, but I don't how bad the issue is or is it all overblown by the media.... might with till next year..... I'm hoping that they announce a change to the hardware tomorrow that will completely fix the problem..... I don't want a "free bumper" or some patch up of a fix.... Crossing my fingers that they don't dismiss the issue :(

Awesome, thanks for the info! Wonder how that works with contracts? I don't mind so much as long as I could replace the phone I guess but I suppose I could argue the contract was based around the phone I purchased, will wait and see what happens at the press conference!

It's not Jobs it's Ive.

Jobs is valuable, Ive is useless.

Designers are a dime a dozen, I'm sure they can find one. It's an unskilled position.

How about some examples of the design work you have done, and the number of people you have influenced?

Nothing? Thought so......

The press conference is to shut down the echo chambers.

Bottom line:
A recall would cost Apple upwards of $3 billion.
Giving a free bumper to every serial number would cost about $200 thousand.

The issue is that the Apple iAd, iTunes and developer companies are impacted as a result. There's also the potential for the loss of market share due to people dumping the phone for something that works - sure people will resolve the issues themselves with their own cases but this is not a great position to be in.

The associated revenue impact should also be covered by your decision 'calculation'..

Usually replacements are issued in the event there is a problem which will reduce this a little - my MBP is still running the original nVidia 8600M GT bump-gate GPU without needing a replacement (now out of the free replacement period).

Amen!
My iPhone 4 is awesome, love it!!!

Ok, so here is my take on it.

Yes shorting both antennas will ultimately lead to leakage of transmission as well as blocking of reception.

On how many occasions would we be holding the phone is a grip of death while using wifi and 3g simultaneously?

My guess here, is that we could have a software fix that would lower down the power to the wifi antenna when 3G or voice are being used.

Don't know if anyone has experimented to see if the problem persists with wifi off or not? If the problem is not reproducible if wifi is off, then this might be the way to fix. Just reduce wifi power during 3G usage and away we go :)

They could also do some snazzy stuff by actually analyzing the return on both antennas via software to determine the antennas are being shorted or not and drop wifi power if they detect the short during 3G usage. That way the fix would be even more specific to people holding the phone in this particular grip :)

Simply put the phone could detect if it's held the wrong way while 3G is being used and drop wifi power to compensate for that :)

What you are describing is the DeathGrip App - available 07/16/2010 in the App Store for only $29.99. The only downside as this App is so processor intensive that while running in the background it will prevent the phone from being able to multitask.
