I agree there seems to be a problem, but my concern is if this is truly effecting EVERYONE, like the internet states. Why are so many people keeping their phones?

I can only speak for myself but - I would prefer to have an IP4, despite the reception issue, than a different phone. I've been Apple for 15 years. I'm on my 10th desktop, My 4th laptop, My 4th iPod and the IP4 is my second iPhone.

changing to another phone would involve lots of problems like:

• learning how to use it
• Syncing it with my existing Mac apps and other Apple kit
• Making my MobileMe redundant
• writing off my $200+ investment in iPhone Apps
• maybe having to re-encode all my AAC files

The IP4 reception issue is a serious problem. But for me at least, taking it back and getting a different phone would be an even bigger problem as I've bought into everything Apple in a big way.

My not returning the phone should not be interpreted as an acceptance of the reception issue or cast doubt on the seriousness of the issue in any way. I honestly do believe that Apple will come up with a way to fix (or at least improve) it and will make good in the end. Hopefully we'll hear about how they are going to do that tomorrow.

A free bumper won't cut it. My money is on a recall/swap out.

"Apple on Wednesday invited select press to a special press conference"

Sounds like what Obama does when he holds a press conference. He stacks the room with liberal reporters and they lob him softball questions. There isnt a single REAL journalist in the room for his press conferences. Nothing but bloggers and people pushing the left wing agenda.

Lets hope Jobs doesnt resort to that tactic.

Just like George W. did...oh, wait, he got softball questions from male escorts.....

Word of the day

deny

1. To declare untrue; contradict.
2. To refuse to believe; reject.
3. To refuse to recognize or acknowledge; disavow.
4.
a. To decline to grant or allow; refuse: deny the student's request; denied the prisoner food or water.
b. To give a refusal to; turn down or away: The protesters were determined not to be denied.
c. To restrain (oneself) especially from indulgence in pleasures.

First, I travel very frequently. To places that others with the issue have said they live.

Second I've used the speedtest app in many of these places. No drop in anything.

The better question might be, why do you think you know everything about the tech in the phone as well as every user's experience? Please, enlighten me with your qualifications to speak on both of these points. I'd also LOVE to see your data and sources for the numbers posted above. Amazing that the problem happens to be "100 times". Apple can sure engineer a failure!

Perfect! These people are killing me trying to say EVERYBODY has the same issues as them. Misery loves company I guess

steve almighty will show the world, how to hold your iphone, the RIGHT way. ;)

What i really think the press conference will be about is the second launch of iPhone 4, namely the next batch of countries in Europe among others.

There is no reception issue according to Apple just a global misconception that receiving calls on a phone is a vital feature.

A recall could explain the lack of available cases that manufacturers are actually shipping right now, too.

Steve is going to be like the soup nazi tomorrow. All the complainers will have their phone taken away while steve says "no phone for you". Honestly, those who don't like the phone don't deserve it. It should be taken away like a mother takes a toy away from a child who is being bad.

I've said this before but if you don't like it, take it back. You would do it with any other piece of equipment like a brand new tv. Why would your phone be any different here? I think some customers who are having the problem want so badly to love their phone it's like an abusive relationship. "he beats me but he told me he would stop. Things are gonna be different. I just know it!"

But people do like it. I'd happily dispute any argument that the iPhone 4 isn't the best smartphone currently available. But at the same time the consumer is allowed to be unhappy about issues, defects, etc and not actually want to return the phone because they like it so much.

Conservatives are such sore losers that they spend all their time bashing the president and tea bagging eachother.

Do we need to talk about this garbage in here? Can I come to a forum without having a leftie or a rightie shoving politics down my throat?

Only Apple could figure out a way to profit on giving an item away for free! What a company!

Except that's not what's actually happened yet. Why are some people so quick to jump to conclusions?

Like everybody else, I hope Apple get's it right. I am looking forward to getting an iPhone, sans reception issue. But even beyond that, I hope Apple does it so well that it just blows everybody away and proves all you nay-sayers wrong. Like just a full on, "....wow! Way to go Apple!"

I think they're just taking the time to make sure they DO get it right.

Like others have said... Have faith!

I have received 1 of 4 iPhone 4's that I ordered for my business and it works better then my 3GS did both on my 3G Microcell at home or out and about... Meaning it drops less calls regardless of what the signal bars show.

For those that are concerned about an iPhone 4 purchase, the Droid X went on sale today on Verizon and looks to be a great phone and there are lots of other good choices.

I suspect Steve Jobs will be very diplomatic and say that there are no serious issues with iPhone 4, but will reiterate that if users are concerned then they can return the phone with no restock charge, and for those who think that their unit is faulty, they can have them replaced by Apple directly.

Then later on in the week, a quiet price drop in the bumpers etc.

I don't agree with the people stating that a recall is impossible.
Apple could develop an exchange program, putting people in a waiting list according to how early they bought their IPhone, in the meantime they can provide customers with free bumpers or a coupon. Apple can always sell the recalled Iphones once they are updated, not at full price, but they can still get some money from them.

It is vital, of course, to fix once and for all the antenna issue.

10 AM

Good morning,

<hand wave> 'You know there are no defects in the MAGICAL iPhone 4'

'We know there are no defects in the iPhone 4'

<hand wave> 'MAGICAL, MAGICAL, MAGICAL iPhone 4'

'We know there are no defects in the MAGICAL iPhone 4'

<hand wave> 'After this MAGICAL moment You will go home and rethink your life and buy an MAGICAL iPhone 4. If you have already bought it, get one more'

'We will go home, rethink our lives and buy an MAGICAL iPhone 4 or get one more'

<hand wave> 'You will also buy the MAGICAL iBumper Case or our MAGICAL iDuct Tape'

'We will also buy your MAGICAL iBumper Case or the MAGICAL iDuct Tape'

Ahh, one last thing,

claps, claps and more claps.

<hand wave> 'You hate Consumer Reports.'

'We hate Consumer Reports.'

:p

iPhone

I won't down load any more updates until I find out more about them. The new ios has screwed up my 3GS. I'm not impressed.

I want them to address the proximity issue. i doubt they will but would love to hear what they have planned for that. The most ridiculous thing about the majority of the posts from people who don't experience either of these problems is that they think they only exist on a small batch of phones. Both of these problems are issues on every iPhone 4!

I'll give you the antenna issue might exist in all phones, but what is your excuse how many of us aren't experiencing the proximity issue yet our phone some how still has it? You can't claim that some areas have better data coverage like the antenna.

So why would some of ours not display the proximity issue if you are claiming ours has it?

Easiest way to do recall.....just like warranty service through apple.
Register online if you have the problem
A new iPhone will be shipped to your address plus return package for the defective phone
Send defective phone back within 14 days or be charged for the additional phone.
Easypeasy.

Agreed!

My money is that Apple says the press is over exaggerating and that they attack Consumer Reports head on. I just really don't see Apple ever admitting that they messed up. It's not in their nature to admit anything that they do is wrong, so I don't see them starting now.

While this is a big stupid design error (and one that they obviously knew existed before it came out), the fact remains that the average iPhone user doesn't use their phone for anything so probably doesn't even recognize the issue. And by average I don't consider anyone here average. AT&T said that 94% of iPhone users on their network are less than 200MB a month. If you can stay under 200MB it means you don't do a damn thing on your phone. Wi-Fi is not yet available in enough public areas to be on Wi-Fi 24/7 so if you DO find yourself on Wi-Fi that much it means you're at home or Starbucks and you're never using your phone when you're outside.

Mobile minute usage has gone down tremendously in favor of messaging and I'd put my job on it that anyone who IS having a problem with this issue thinks it's AT&T's fault with reception before they even consider it to be an Apple related issue.

So, if I was a gambling man, I'm going with Apple pulling a Matrix-like "there is no spoon" and saying that there is no issue and that the media is just blowing this way out of proportion.

I actually would be shocked if Apple admits they aren't perfect and messed up and actually does something about it.

AGREED!

This is a prediction of what will be said:

1. Sorry that a number of phones didn't get proper coating on the antenna.

2. If your phone is between number xxx and xxxx, you can get a free bumper, or a clear unobtrusive high quality tape fix while you wait at an Apple store. And, the 30 days return time has been extended to 45 days.

3. A longish and confusing explanation of the new reception bar software and the usual defense of AT&T..

4. A discussion of Apple's new commitment to quality.

Then, Jobs says "Oh, one more thing", pulls out a sword and falls on it.

Of course, it is a fake. Jobs laughs while several spectators who fainted are tended to.
