I feel like folks are not understanding the difference between fantasy and reality.

I'm not sure where Tumblr became reality? People want to post nudity/porn (legally) onto Tumblr, but Apple has an issue with it. The assumption was they wanted to push a family friendly platform. Then they come up with this.

How can this be called the next "Breaking Bad"? The premise sounds nothing like "Breaking Bad". The only thing similar is gratuitous violence. Which I just don't have faith Apple will be capable of pulling off. Not that they can't afford the talent. I just don't see their executives taking the risk with their brand.

It would be funny if they bought it. Then completely butchered it like the networks do when buying a series. I'm picturing "Bastards" being renamed "Buddies". Instead of military veterans. It becomes an arcade manager and his chimp pulling pranks on children.

It's like saying the Yankees are looking for the next Babe Ruth. Apple is looking for a smash hit, a successful show like Breaking Bad. If you always take life so literally you are probably going to have problems in the future.

This was before Apple found out iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR sales haven't been as strong as they were expecting.

Apple knows sex and violence sells. It's unavoidable if Apple wants their OTT service to be successful and contribute to their services revenue. Services revenue is the new metric they want to be measured by now.

That seems to point to AI driven sex dolls from Apple. Wow, would never have imagined that, but it does seem more likely than a self driving Apple car.

I figured people could understand the difference between hate speech and a TV show, but leave it to MacRumors forums to prove me wrong.
I don't think that's fair.

I don't see how you make a series about adults killing young people without the intense feelings about school shootings and Antifa vs Nazi's rearing it's ugly head. There are certain periods of time where certain projects need to be executed perfectly, or the fallout will be a massive stain on your brand. This is one of those situations and so far Apple's entertainment production skills have not proven to be anywhere close to being competent.

Fair or not, fantasy vs reality or not, for Apple of all companies to consider a project like this would be ill advised. I'd also advise against seeking out the new "All in the Family" as the producers of the new Rosanne show found out.

Someone please explain to me what constitutes violence of substance and gratuitious.
Also, the last thing America needs is programming where vets are murdering teens. There are more things wrong with this that one can count.

I do. I see a major difference between a TV show, regardless of the content, and allowing hate speech on a platform. I get your point and it would actually surprise me if they went this route, but I can certainly see where the line needs to be drawn. A TV show isn’t it for me.

the show, which revolves around two military veterans who go on a killing spree targeting young people, "because they believe today's kids don't understand the sacrifices of their generation."
Sounds like the dumbest premise for a show I've heard in a long time, and would never compare to Breaking Bad. At least in that series, you can understand the anti-hero's point of view. He was a good guy who was reluctant to get involved with drugs, had a strong reason to, and you watch over several episodes his slow transformation into desiring to be a drug lord.

I cannot understand how I would ever sympathise with "insane veterans turned serial killers". If this show wants to become "the next Breaking Bad", they better know what they're doing...

The beauty of Breaking Bad (one of many), was how it tackled various societal and moral issues without becoming preachy, not to mention avoiding using pretty but uncharismatic and vacuous actors. The actors in Breaking Bad really looked and acted their part, the cast was amazing - and there weren't any of the usual Hollywood politics forced upon the viewer. I fear this kind of no-nonsense approach simply isn't in Apple's DNA, but we'll see...

As far as Better Call Saul goes, it has been overall been a disappointment. If you look at the series as a stand-alone show, its pace was nearly glacial until the second half of the third season (with some great moments overall here and there). The fourth season was outstanding, but there has simply been too many pointless characters and storylines so far, to make this a true classic like Breaking Bad. Hopefully the show's team will halfway redeem themselves, by making one hell of a 5th season, which I strongly believe they will.

The difference is, this is not Apple allowing you to download a violent series. This is Apple creating the series. Branding wise, you can't say at your press conference that violence, hate, and division have no place on this platform, and then turn around and create and benefit from a TV program that, by it's description, is about violence, hate, and division. You are needlessly setting yourself up for calls of hypocrisy.

I think you make a fair point, but I just don’t fully agree. Supporting actual violence, hate, and division is very different from creating a TV show that has some of that in it. I was actually kind of on board with Apple keeping content family friendly, but I certainly wouldn’t mind more mature content either.

Neither would I (with regard to Apple providing a wider range of programming), but I don't think business wise they should be creating shows like this.

Interesting. It seems as though either Apple simply wanted to launch with ‘family-friendly’ content and build out the genres sometime after launch, or, perhaps there’ve been some new decisions made since the supposed original plan of no violent programmes.
Maybe they realised that a service based only on family-friendly content would be a failure.

I for one hope they will build on the family/kid friendly channel and omit the netflix copy. I have a family with young kids, I don't want violent tv shows. If I'm paying, it will have to be a family channel without profanity, nudity and violence. The world is funked up as it is, I don't need my kids to have it fed with a spoon.

And for those that want those kind of things, there is still netflix, cbs and what not.
You might consider something like actual parenting. I am sure Apple will survive if you don't buy their streaming service. I don't think their streaming service would survive with only G rated stuff.

I'm sorry, but "different" content that has substance and isn't gratuitous does not equal mass appeal no matter much you want it to do so.

Breaking Bad was an abberation where everything lined up just right. I like Better Call Saul. But how many people, including me, would bother to watch Better Call Saul if it weren't for the backdrop of Breaking Bad?
And yet Better Call Saul is a much better show than Breaking Bad.

Apple going to be actively promoting violence and hate? Will this show get banned from iTunes?

Speaking of which, Apple is currently selling a song by a black artist where he delights in sexually asssulting and murdering his sister. Not “hate speech” though, I guess... so Timmy is happy to profit from it. Coward.

Just what our society needs...more violent entertainment.

Think different ?

You like violence? You want some songs that promote gang rape of women, murder, kidnapping, torture, targeted killing of police? I got an iTunes hookup for you, my brother. It’s got all the nasty, violent hate and misogyny you could ever desire. Only $9.99. And you best believe Tim Cook is getting a cut of that action. And when he’s done cashing that check, he’s going to lecture you on morality.

Richard Gere is going to make this a hit. Definitely invest in the older generation.
