Am I the only one who finds it slightly funny that this was posted in the iPhone accessories forum when it isn't an iPhone accessory? :p

No wonder why I can never get through to Apple. They are too busy talking to jmwien, who rudely kept asking them over and over, a question which he claimed to know the answer, but wanted Apple to admit they were wrong. The Apple guy stated the facts that they know. It is not supported. Whether it works or not, is still yet to be seen. But, if anything happens to your iPhone, remember, you took the risk and it will be your responsibility.

Now go back to bed, and try a new attitude. The current one you have now is not very pleasant.

excellent find. I think i can deal without the volume control....and i bet it's software that's holding that feature back...it'll probably be resolved in a software update somewhere down the line.

I'm hoping that with the iPhone 2.2.1 or whatever the next software release is, the new headphones WILL be supported. It was stupid of them not to release headphones that don't work with one of their biggest sellers.

I hope nobody mentioned this already...

From apple's site:
Connector

Four-conductor 3.5-mm audio jack

Now the four conductors each have a special purpose.

All headphones have the first two - the Right and Left channels

The next band is the microphone band which is evident on the iphone headphones

The next band can sometimes be used for video, but in this case its being used for the volume controls...

Maybe the iphones don't have an internal connector for the 4th band?

Same here - I'm on my 4th pair (iPhone purchased in Sept. '07). Usually what happens
is the rubber around the edge of the speaker delaminates, despite being babied,
and they have NEVER been subjected to sweat or other possible contaminants...

Wow, what do you people have in your ears, teeths??? I've had and still have different Apple headphones for many years and they work like new!!

Say What???

so they're not FULLY compatible. you can use the headphones for audio, the mic for phone calls, and the center button to answer and hang up calls. no volume control.... i feel as if you came onto these forums just to complain.

apple headphones do suck in that they usually fall apart before a year's end, but other than that i appreciate the sound and style. $29US... may not be worth it to some (or most), but if you pay it then you do get what you pay for: decent sound and great style.

...I am sorry... but I thought these Forums were meant for people to voice their opinion. YES, I am complaining about the headphones and how Apple is handling this. As I said it does not make sense to make these headphones with a mic and not have all the functions be FULLY compatible with the iPhone.

Ok so not it "appears" that the mic is comp. with the iPhone, but why wouldn't all functions be?? Especially since a selling point of the iPhone is that is it ALSO an iPod!

It was posted here as an exercise in wishful thinking. ;)

Now that the official compatibility specs are in, I say bring 'em on! I hope to find a pair under the tree in 3 weeks. Volume control would be nice, but I've survived through 2 generations of iPhones with no remote volume, so I'll live. The phone is always a pocket away, and thankfully, the volume button is easy to use without taking the phone out.

Still, it is pretty dumb that the volume doesn't work. I guess it goes to show A.) how far in advance the 3G was designed (they were probably half way finished with it when the first gen came out), and B.) how fast they can implement a new feature in other products, i.e. the remote volume capable iPods. The remote volume idea obviously came into play well after the 3G's design was already set in stone.

Thinking about it a bit more, it occurs to me that the culprit here may be the FCC, since every specification of a phone must be submitted for approval before manufacture, and Apple waits as long as possible to submit to avoid leaks. So, even though they may already have been working on volume control via remote for other products, the FCC filings may have already been submitted or otherwise unchangeable, making it too late to add the volume control.

It seems to be 'compatible' with the original iPhone, but will it fit without a special attachment?

I know, but I also appreciate the irony. :)

I am surprised that Apple did this. Its not like they didn't know they were going to be releasing the headphones when the 3G came out, so I wonder what gives... It makes not sense not to have full support.

I think someone did mention this. The ipods have the forth band, but the iphones do not, hence no volume control. I don't think a software update will fix this.

What rubber is delaminating? I don't think you're discussing the in-ear headphones. The only rubber is the detachable rubber tips.

I know when these things ship, but any idea on when they'll be hitting stores?

That's what I wanna know. Will they hit the stores before 7-10 days from now? What do I have to do to get them ASAP, cuz I've been drooling over these for months, it seems. Wait, it really has been months.

Also I'm going on a long trip on Dec 17 and I'd REALLY like to have these by then. Should I wait for the stores to get them or order them now (with the 2 day shipping) and cross my fingers????

Why is it that $200 and $70/month can't get hardware in your headphone jack to run a volume control that the phone's manufacturer makes? The iPhone 3G was released about 4 months before the new iPods. Was this a brand new idea that came up in July? If Apple is going to do a minor iPhone update in January, can we count on them to fix this issue?

I'm hoping this is the case. I still have the old EDGE iPhone, and I'm leaving for a few months in the middle of January. If they update it, I can grab a new one to replace mine and grab the new headphones.

I don't complain about incompatible with iphone. why? it is still working for basic purpose like play/stop music, get a call. volume control? I don't care. why some of you complain? it is like many ipod touch users don't get new Google street view, share information feature on 2.2 update. so iphone users! don't complain it. you can still do 90% of it.

well, it is not ipods or iphone, or mac demand. they can easily make plenty of stocks already. so when it says '7-10 business days', it will be available monday or tuesday next week.

iPhone headphones have four conductors - mic, ground, left, right.

I went to an Apple store today and the guy said they'll have them by the 10th.

Okay, thats what I wanted to hear! By next week would be awesome (although I was hoping for yesterday as a release date, but next tuesday is just as good) Any later and I'd have been a little upset.

I wouldn't be surprised if people start getting their dirty hands on them this weekend.

I hope to anyway.

Bloody typical! I bought a pair of Sennheiser CX 400-II's last night, 'cos I was fed up of waiting for Apple to release them. as I clicked 'confirm Order' I thought to myself: "No doubt Apple will release their headphones tomorrow, lol."

:mad::confused::D

Not available on the UK site tho.

I hate to say it, but you're probably better off. Sennheiser is a good brand. What has Apple ever released in their entire history that would indicate they know how to make a high-end pair of earphones? I'd certainly want to hear them before even considering them. Bose is a famous brand by comparison, but they put out overpriced for the quality products. Sennheiser, Grado and Koss all make some good model headphones (not every model, but they do know how to make them). I recently bought a pair of JVC noise-canceling headphones and for less than half the price of Bose (which I've heard can fall apart within a year for no reason other than junky parts) they even sound decent and certainly cancel noise on planes and even my tractor very well with my iPod Touch.

couldn't wait so i just brought a pair of v-moda in-ear head phones they are great but i'll wait and see who decides to buy the new apple in ear-head sets, maybe it will work for the 3g maybe it wont. just going to have to wait and see
