Backed up does not mean driven by. RAPPERS rule the music world these days. I'm not against it or in favor of it. I'm just stating the facts.

That might be the case in the US, but the rest of the world is a different story thank god. If this is about user numbers then it's the biggest waste of money possible, even more so than Beats. They could just lower the Apple Music subscription price by $3/£3 and gain that many customers - no loss in cash.

Jay Z is a far better businessman than he'll ever be musician, so would guess that'll be a factor in it. Sadly I think it is more about removing competition than anything else.

Do you think tidal is exclusive to rap? Madonna is one of the owners of Tidal.

Wow! Apple executives must really love RAP music! They are investing massive amount of money in anything related to this music style.

It's kind of interesting to think that many of these artists have written so much homophobic or sexist stuff.

Before you comment on my post, let me say I don't dislike RAP music or the RAP culture. It's just not favorite.

Apple Music isn't going to happen? In 1 year it added more paid customers then tidal did in 5 years.

Not to mention Spotify doesn't make a profit. It will be dead soon enough

Stop trying to make Apple Music happen. It isn't going to happen.

How about, instead of acquiring the competition for insane amounts of cash, they actually WORK on the user interface and other issues that make Spotify the #1 streaming service? How's that for an idea? Acquiring a user base isn't going to make your abysmal product any better. This doesn't make sense. Why is Apple not making sense?

I quit all the streaming services. I'm happy with all my 1000 CD's I sent to murfie.com and stream lossless or whatever tracks I've bought on iTunes. But I'm an exception because I only listen to modern classical music and musical theatre and I still buy SACD's.

Tidal has a web player like every other service. Apple buys them then you are forced to use that POS iTunes. No thanks.

I could see them buying it for $500m- $1b. Jay z bought it for $54 million when it had a hundred thousand customers. Add in exclusives with Madonna, Kanye and all the other top selling artists today and you've got a lot more expensive aquisition.

paying 100M (guess) for Tidal's 4Million subs would be a bargain versus paying 3 BILLION for beats. Its a 33% increase in subs, half of those pay double what apple currently charges btw, all of this for an insignificant amount.

Just dont go around paying a billion for it!

Is it possible that the infrastructure is what they are after?
[doublepost=1467327159][/doublepost]

Rumors has it that Apple has wanted to do the HIFI music thing, so it could be the infrastructure they are after. I tried the Tidal thing once and unless you are really listening on Premo system... it's just not worth the price of admission.

The point is to:
(a) acquire an immediate increase of 4.2M paying subscribers
(b) decrease the competitive landscape
(c) strengthen ties with recording artists.
So it's pointless like I stated

No telling how many will jump ship or are only short term because some artist has exclusives.

It's real competition is Spotify then Amazon Music/Google play. Tidal is just a niche for the few who want to stream lossless and the fans of artists with are lured into getting an account to listen to artists stupid exclusive deals.

apples ties are already strong regardless of this acquisition
Yeah because no one wears Beats branded stuff
No one who cares about quality sound.

Apple is in talks to acquire rapper Jay Z's streaming music service Tidal, reports The Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter." The talks are said to be exploratory and "may not result in a deal," but Apple is considering the purchase to bolster its Apple Music service.

A Tidal spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that Tidal executives had not held talks with Apple, and the terms of the deal are unknown.

Tidal, which launched in 2014 and was acquired by Jay Z in January of 2015 before a March 2015 re-launch, is a subscription-based music service that advertises high-quality lossless audio and high-definition music videos. Tidal offers two tiers of service, a standard premium option for $9.99 per month and HiFi for $19.99 per month. Tidal has 4.2 million paying subscribers, and as of March, 45 percent of those subscribers paid extra for the hi-fidelity tier.

Positioned as one of Apple Music's major competitors, Tidal has clashed with Apple in the past. In February, Apple was in talks to exclusively debut Kanye West's album "The Life of Pablo," but West pulled out of talks and opted to debut his album on Tidal.

Tidal's strong connection to artists like Kanye West, Beyonce, and Madonna is one of the reasons Apple is mulling an acquisition. Apple has made a major push into both exclusive and original content with Apple Music, luring artists like Taylor Swift, the Weeknd, Eminem, and more into offering up Apple Music exclusives.

Today is the one-year anniversary of Apple Music, which first debuted in 110 countries on June 30, 2015. As of June 2016, Apple Music has more than 15 million paying subscribers.

The Prince catalog alone is worth the purchase. Jay Z needs money. He even sued the company that sold Tidal to him. Also Prince's estate needs the money. Apple has 178 Billion. Money talks.
Prince is the only reason I'd be excited about this. A number of his albums aren't available on iTunes. Tidal has them.
you can actually buy the albums withou subscribing to Tidal. Considered doing this but now will wait a bit to see what happens.

did you read the thread opener?

"Tidal's strong connection to artists like Kanye West, Beyonce, and Madonna is one of the reasons Apple is mulling an acquisition."

.
And here is the closing missed "when Tidal is down all artists will have strong connections with other providers of their product to their market, us consumers."

As much as some people don't understand this acquisition, just one thought: Jay Z working for Apple. Game over.

It's not worth the $1B they paid for Beats but somewhere below that is worth getting Jay Z and the entire Tidal backers on board with Apple. The Tidal brand can be used to differentiate as a higher FLAC quality audio service for Apple Music, bringing along those subscribers willing to pay for higher quality audio. This will go well with the drop of the headphone jack and the move towards digital audio Lightning headphones.

A Trump fan per chance? 'Sound like him.
