Why does Apple need Tidal to offer lossless music? That is one exclusive Tidal doesn't have. If Apple wanted to offer it they could reach a deal with the music labels fairly easily, I'm sure. Question really is, if Apple buys Tidal will it go all-in on lossless audio or will it put Jay-Z on the Apple payroll, assign Tidal's exclusive licenses to Apple Music, and shutter Tidal?

I think the bolded is pretty accurate.

Yes, Apple doesn't need Tidal for lossless music.
But I sure hope Apple has lossless in mind. It is the only reason why I'm using both Tidal and Apple Music.
I would quit Tidal in a heartbeat if Apple offers lossless streaming.

paying 100M (guess) for Tidal's 4Million subs would be a bargain versus paying 3 BILLION for beats. Its a 33% increase in subs, half of those pay double what apple currently charges btw, all of this for an insignificant amount.

Just dont go around paying a billion for it!

A Tidal spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that Tidal executives had not held talks with Apple, and the terms of the deal are unknown.

How could terms of the deal potentially even be disclosed if talks have not been held? Lol

This would be good though. Tidal has a lot of exclusives including Prince's catalog.

Apple shouldn't buy it, they should focus on making better products

I'd love to think they can do both.

I don't understand why people are so concerned about how much Apple may end up spending on this (unless of course you're a shareholder). They've got more than enough money in the bank. Acquisitions seem to be the name of the game at the moment. How much did Microsoft just pay for Linkdin?

I hope so. FLAC audio on lightning headphones must sound nice.

Plenty of phones can push out FLAC and high resolution audio via 3.5mm jack. And the best headphones in the world are 3.5mm.

Buying Tidal to debut lossless streaming would be just another move by Apple to convince people that Lightning headphones are superior, when they are nothing more than regular headphones with chips in them that could and should be in the phone.

The fact that a lightning to 3.5mm adapter can even exist, should give you a clue as to how pointless the switch will be. Build the adapter's components into the phone to start and you won't need to change a standard.

All lightning headphones will have analog wiring going to the drivers... The actual parts that deliver the sound will work no differently than if they were plugged into 3.5mm.

Or, they could just wait for Tidal to go under.

Only problem is that if they go under then those artists will now negotiate exclusives with Apple, Google and Spotify.

If they just buy them outright, Apple will get all the rights.

True, they have the money to spend... But my worry is they have spread there self too thin. I really think the iphone has lots most of it's competitive advantage over competitors, siri is years behind, lap tops haven't been updated in a while, Apple TV is mediocre at best, and Apple watch hasn't found it self yet.

So I think management should concentrate on making there current offer great again (sorry, I couldn't help the trump reference). But they have the money and if it improves Apple Music, than you are right :)

Stop trying to make Apple Music happen. It isn't going to happen.

How about, instead of acquiring the competition for insane amounts of cash, they actually WORK on the user interface and other issues that make Spotify the #1 streaming service? How's that for an idea? Acquiring a user base isn't going to make your abysmal product any better. This doesn't make sense. Why is Apple not making sense?
