This is AWFUL.

[snip]

So, thanks Apple. You sell a defective Nano battery, initiate a recall, and replace the units with a substitute that's inferior in every way but capacity.

Superior in . . . value.

Sell it on eBay. Buy a refurbed 1st Gen. And you'll have cash to spare.

:D

It's an interesting thing... I kept the old white iPod nano 1G (1GB model, woo hoo) in a box for years... it hadn't worked since 2008 (dead battery of course) but I thought it might become a collector's item someday... then this whole thing came up and I sent it in thinking, hey a *working* relic is better than a non-working one... and instead, tomorrow I will receive a 6th gen nano, which may also become a collector's item if it turns out to be the *last* nano - a possibility.

This is AWFUL.

If i'd known they'd replace my 1st Gen with a current model, I would never have sent it in for what I thought would be a replacement battery or refurbed unit with a different battery. What a ripoff.

#1, the 1st Gen is the ideal form factor for me. I can walk and listen with the iPod in my coat pocket (or even through my shirt breast pocket), change songs, scan back and forth without a glance. The current touchscreen model is useless for that purpose except to change volume. Plus it's way too small to manipulate easily with one hand, even when looking at it (which you have to do). It's a two-hand device. No clickwheel -- you've gotta swipe while looking. And when not looking, be careful not to accidentally swipe when you don't want to. Thanks, Steve!

#2, the 1st Gen Nano and the 1-5th Gen Classic have the best quality audio because they use Wolfson audio chips. All current iPods and iPhones use different audio chips, which have harsh highs and weak lows to my ears, especially with good headphones. Thanks, Steve!

As for greater capacity of the current Gen Nano, I don't need to carry around more than 4GB of music; the 1st Gen Nano was ideal. All Nano Gen designs since the 1st got progressively worse until now it's lost its original purpose.

6th gen has more features, more capacity and more battery life. Getting this is a replacement for a 6 year-old iPod is a pretty good deal if you ask me.

Progressively worse since the 1st gen? Now you're just being a baby. I can attest to the 5th gen being better than the 6th gen but the 1st gen being better than any other generation? GET REAL.

Apple can't win, some of you wanted your 1st gen back and many wanted the 6th gen instead. People that collected the 1st gen probably didn't pull it out of the case anyway or risked sending it in.

I bet 95% of the people that sent their 1st gen in it was collecting dust, beat to hell, scratched, broken and of no value as a collector's item in the first place.

I'm still waiting on a box that they say is going to arrive in 4-6 weeks. I would gladly trade a new nano for my 1G just to be done with this! Now that they are giving out 6G's why don't they just handle this in store?

I just submitted my info to Apple so they can send me a box to mail my iPod nano.

I also turned the old nano on to see if it still works, and oh my god! I had forgotten how good the games are :p Just scored 412 on Brick...

I still have my original Nano from 2005 which I have not used in several years and no longer works. I plugged it into the repair request form and it worked! Awesome!

I applied for the program on Nov. 11th, which is the date I thought the program started. I didn't receive my box until last week! That's over a month wait just to receive the box! I was really hoping to get the 1st gen nano back. It's the best nano they produced, and I already have the other nano's. (collector.) Bummed.

I Got Mine!

Got a silver 8GB 6th gen Nano in replacement for the first gen Nano that got RMA-ed.

:) :apple:

Ha actually tried playing with my 1G nano before sending it back and I had forgotten how to use the click wheel. No regrets getting the 6G version back. I expect FedEx to ring my doorbell anytime now... (yes my replacement is scheduled to be delivered today).

I said many times in the original thread we would get new nanos but was voted down. This was obviously going to happen, much cheaper and easier for Apple to do it this way.

#1 - My noting the sound quality reduction, device size over-reduction, and interface complication due to removal of the clickwheel can hardly be cited as "being a baby." The new Nano designs since 1G are inferior for MY purposes, period. GET REAL.

I really don't care if "95% of people" abused or wore out their recalled Nano. Good for them if they want a new one. I used mine almost daily, took good care of it and it was in excellent condition. And it sounded better than a new one, a feature you evidently care nothing about. Call me a 5-percenter.

Up to and including first gen iPod touch apple allowed charging over FireWire. My old stereo did that, and stopped charging when I upgraded to iPhone 3G, as they dropped the FireWire pins at that point. It's likely it won't charge the newer iPod if it was designed for 1s gen models.

In my last car, I had an Alpine head unit that my iPod 5G connected to via 30 pin connector. It would charge and play. When I upgraded to an iPod Nano 4G, I had to buy an adapter (mine was from Scosche) that kept it charged. It would play just fine without the adapter, but wouldn't charge as the original iPod had.

Thanks for responses. Here's hoping the iPod nano upgrade doesn't wind up costing another $300 for an automobile adaptor.

I really hope my iPod comes back as a 1st generation Nano. If it doesnt, I am just going to give the new model to my neighbor's kid, and buy a clean 1st gen off of Ebay.

So, slightly OT, but also still deals with the topic at hand.

I submitted my request on 11/12, so it's been over a month, and still no box. I called in a couple weeks ago, and I was told that I will receive an email prior to the box actually arriving. Did anyone receive a notification the return box was being shipped, or did it just show up? Just curious if what I was told was accurate or not.

While I really liked my 1st Gen Nano when I got it, I haven't used it in years. I'm ok with getting either one back as I may then try to find a use for it.

would rather my old one

Wouldn't have sent my original nano in if i'd have known i'd get a new nano back. Already have two of those. I suppose someone in my family will get a new gift that keeps on giving.

I dunno it's really just dumb luck that Apple decided to do this and that people kept these things around. These things are what seven years old? If the battery didn't already leak, it's long since dead and out of warranty so I don't see this as something Apple needed to do in the first place... so I don't really care what nano they send me one way or the other my iPhone does the job but hey... it's a free pedometer if nothing else.

I did keep the nano around thinking it might be worth something someday... and it now is. #winning.

I was in the same situation, I called after about a month with no box and they said I would receive an e-mail when they shipped out a box. I never received an e-mail. The box just showed up at my doorstep, I popped in the nano, and dropped it off at Fedex the next day.

The support person also said that they hadn't even shipped out any refurbished nano's yet, but there were plenty of photos around the web of refurbished 1st gen nanos showing up. Does anyone know what date the program actually started? I thought I was a day one responder...

This news makes sending my first-gen nano in and getting a replacement/upgrade all the more tempting but I'm opting to keep it as it has too much sentimental value. It was the first iPod I ever owned and it actually changed my life.

No. I don't like it. I want my 1st generation nano back! The new size is too small, and it may not work on my car.

Long since dead? Mine (well, my kids now) works just fine still. Didn't bother sending it in for another 1G, but just ordered the shipping-box after reading this. The 6G seems perfect for working out, I get more space, and I suppose the battery is better
