I don't think you can count on getting a new fifth generation iPod. It's possible that Apple is just dealing with a temporary supply constraint and that in a few weeks they'll switch back to sending repaired iPods.

Personally, I love the new design, so I just sent in an order to replace my very old Nano. I'm interested in getting that radio with the ability to rewind. It's perfect for the gym.

Bah, crap. I have enough touch-based stuff already. I need a device I can control remotely without looking at the display. Can I sue them for replacing my unit with useless (to me) chunk?

Damn. I received my replacement box a while back but I reconsidered about replacing my nano because I was using it and frankly, it works perfectly fine. Now that I find out they are replacing with new ones, I want to exchange mine for that but the shipping label has already expired.

Any chance of getting a new replacement box? =/

Yes, just go through the process again. That's what the instructions in the box say to do, anyway.

Why would the serial number matter? Isn't this replacement for all 1st gen nanos?

Well, for one thing, they won't replace a 1st-gen nano which was just shipped back out as a replacement :)

Sending in three 1st gens now ... we'll see!

We have 3 1st-gen Nanos boxed up for FedEx right now. They all have ... imperfect ... screens (okay, broken ... but they still all play!). These were iPods for the kids years ago which have long since been replaced with newer units. So, I'm fine with whatever happens:

1. They see the broken screens and just send them back. We continue using them as enlarged Shuffles. If they catch fire, though, Apple is liable for any damages.

2. They get replaced by "new" 1st-gen Nanos. They were nice little units back then, and still are now. We have kids who would love to have one of them.

3. They get replaced by new new 6th-gen Nanos. Cool beans. The kids will love them :)

Apple can't please everyone.

Pleases me. Whichever replacement I get I consider this awesome support.

6th generation serial?

My old Nano arrived at the service center on 21 November and I received an email saying that the replacement shipped on 17 December. The replacement serial number is: DCYGVK25DCMN

I went to the "Apple Support - Your Service and Support Coverage" site: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do

Put the serial number in and it said it was a 6th Generation Nano and that it had a valid purchase date but that Tech Support and Repair and Service Coverage had expired. It appears that it is a refurbished unit

My car has an ICE iPod hookup allowing me to play music through the speakers and keep the 1st gen iPod recharged. My understanding is that newer iPods/iPhones/iPads have different power requirements. For example, my iPad2 won't charge in my car.

Does anyone know if the new iPods work with legacy connectors?
Will I lose car stereo capability with nano upgrade?

Like someone mentioned already, the Scosche adapter works just fine to convert the FW charging systems to USB2.

I have a blitzsafe adapter in my car which charged over firewire. When I got my iPhone 3GS, I upgraded just the cable on the adapter to one that charged over the correct pins. Depending on what adapter you have, you can simply change out the 30-pin cable.

I do not believe that all 1st gen nanos are being recalled, just those with the defective battery. You can enter the serial number at the apple website to see if yours qualifies.

Where to send for a replacement?

What are the steps to get a replacement? And where do I send it?

Wow, have actually now just made the effort to find my old first generation nano.

Let's hope they don't find a few more old ones on a shelf somewhere!

My wife had one of the units that was part of the recall. It had a non-functioning clickwheel and screen and so we wondered if this would be a problem, but there it looks as though it won't be as the replacement unit has just shipped.
From the sound of things it is likely to be a current generation nano, of a greater capacity than her original unit, which was 2GB.

I quite like the latest gen devices, and getting one back in place of an essentially non-functional unit is pretty good in my book. No complaints here!

As our first generation iPods are long out of warranty I would not be surprised if these replacements have "expired" or very limited warranty periods.

Can somebody tell me if this repairing service is still available or not?

It took three weeks to get my box, whereas a co-worker who responded immediately got the box in few days. However we are both still waiting on replacements.

Well you're both better off. I'm 5+ weeks with no box, so I'm some indeterminate time away from even entering the queue you're waiting in.

I fully expect the entire process to have taken 16 weeks by the time it's done.

just got an email that apple is sending me the 6th gen as a replacement! woo, I'm from Canada so its not just the states that are getting the new nanos. I requested it on Nov 23rd.

This is AWFUL.

If i'd known they'd replace my 1st Gen with a current model, I would never have sent it in for what I thought would be a replacement battery or refurbed unit with a different battery. What a ripoff.

#1, the 1st Gen is the ideal form factor for me. I can walk and listen with the iPod in my coat pocket (or even through my shirt breast pocket), change songs, scan back and forth without a glance. The current touchscreen model is useless for that purpose except to change volume. Plus it's way too small to manipulate easily with one hand, even when looking at it (which you have to do). It's a two-hand device. No clickwheel -- you've gotta swipe while looking. And when not looking, be careful not to accidentally swipe when you don't want to. Thanks, Steve!

#2, the 1st Gen Nano and the 1-5th Gen Classic have the best quality audio because they use Wolfson audio chips. All current iPods and iPhones use different audio chips, which have harsh highs and weak lows to my ears, especially with good headphones. Thanks, Steve!

As for greater capacity of the current Gen Nano, I don't need to carry around more than 4GB of music; the 1st Gen Nano was ideal. All Nano Gen designs since the 1st got progressively worse until now it's lost its original purpose.

So, thanks Apple. You sell a defective Nano battery, initiate a recall, and replace the units with a substitute that's inferior in every way but capacity.

Does anyone know if I can exchange my new replacement 8GB nano for another color or even a 16GB and pay the difference?
