I am quite upset, being from a smaller country (Czech Republic). OpenAI / ChatGPT communicates in Czech language but Apple Intelligence has a restricted list of languages??? The iPhone 16 upgrade will be quite useless for many countries and nations.

The feature is not geo locked. I am in Germany and Apple Intelligence works just fine since I have always had an US Apple Account. As long as your account isn't from a country within the EU or China, it should be working fine as soon as your language is supported

Ironically the likelihood is that if the UK (probably Apples 3rd biggest market) didn't "Brexit" then Apple would almost certainly have negotiated a deal with the EU despite the DMA.

Apple exposes those API's for Apple Intelligence, they are on the developer portal you can integrate them in your own apps and make do with it what you want 🤷‍♂️ What you can't do (yet!? as I seem to have heard something about it in the keynot) is integrate your own AI with those API's. And that is where there would be some grey area as users may expose a lot of private data unknowingly to some apps.

The text is misleading. The languages will be supported, not the actual (EU) countries because Apple doesn't know what to make of the EU AI regulations, better said wants to wait until the countries themselves have put that into local law.

Apple has never cared much to make iOS fully supported in medium-sized and smaller countries, even the ones with millions of iPhone owners, and consumers who own several many Apple products.

This was true long before the EU started regulating big tech and implementing the DMA.

-Why would Apple spend more than the bare minimum in r&d for iOS users in smaller countries when those consumers still buy and use Apple products about as much as those in bigger countries that get full support?

A country being in or outside the EU or any other region means nothing to Apple when considering who gets AI.

It all comes down to money and the countries with the largest number of citizens and iOS users will always come first in line as supporting those countries will always reach more users.

However, since this year we finally received official support for the Slovenian language, Apple Intelligence is worthless without this support. The same goes for the now old friend Siri, which still doesn't understand the Slovenian language.

That's because of AI law which is more related to the copyright and they are serious about it. They asked all companies to show what they used to train AI and allow users to remove their own data from AI based on the copyright.

But if that happens, nobody cant make AI because that's how it works: almost all companies literally steal user's data to train AI so they have to refuse.

Be aware, even USA gov is also hostile to AI as they favored to artists over AI companies from many law cases so we never know what's going to happen in future. It feels like they are just letting AI companies do whatever they want for now in order to compete.

I think that what counts at Apple is the influence and size of the country, rather than the difficulty of the language 😁. German is known to be very challenging for UI because it has very long names and they are among the first to be able to use certain services, like Apple Fitness+ for example.

And having said Apple Fitness+, I would be happy to use it in English if I could. But no, it's not available in Slovenia...

Well, i’ve been testing Apple Intelligence on my devices and my native language is Slovak and on numerous occasions I was able to trigger the Summarization feature in Mail app for an email that was written in the Slovak language.

The summary itself was written in English ofc, but the content was correct, so the Apple LLM that processes the summarization on device is able to understand Slovak (and I assume other languages).

It's just the way LLMs work. It’s not especially limited to a certain language.

The only roadblock is the fine tuning and I would love Apple to give these slavic languages some love after 13 years without any support in Siri 1.0 😉

Apple Intelligence will start rolling out to the public in U.S. English only when iOS 18.1 is released in October, but additional languages will be added over the next year. The features are compatible with any iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 model.

Apple told publications including The Verge that Apple Intelligence will support the following previously-unannounced languages in 2025:

• Germany (German)
• Italy (Italian)
• South Korea (Korean)
• Portugal (Portuguese)
• Vietnam (Vietnamese)

Apple previously announced that support for English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. will be added in December (likely with iOS 18.2), and that support for Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will be added next year.

iOS 18.1 is already available in beta for developers, and it includes Apple Intelligence features such as writing tools for proofreading text, notification summaries, suggested replies in the Messages app, the ability to record and transcribe phone calls, and a new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can quickly remove objects from a photo.

Really? I hadn’t realised this. I thought Apple Intelligence wasn’t on either in EU (I live in Ireland)
