Indeed, extremely poorly written. It makes no sense.
yes. extremely poorly written.

macrumors has never been able to understand the implications between apple's settings when it comes to region and language and apple account ID.

especially on this topic of AI it makes sense that language is playing a major factor.

from the start when macrumors reports AI rollout in the USA as:
quote

U.S. (English) (October 2024)

endquote

but then only lists countries later, its clear that the article is not able to provide us readers with a clear interpretation of what apple is planning.

its a lazy and unclear style. not helpful.

And Portugal still doesn’t have an Apple Store 😳
its a shame that apple ignores Portugal and Lisbon in particular.

in the country where i live , my city has 2 million people. this is a country that has alot of apple stores. but no apple store in this city.
instead it farms out its services to a major electronics chain that provides very poor information and services.
its an opportunity lost by them.

Most likely:
  • Canada (December 2024)
Otherise probably with France in 2025

At worse.....even later. But my money is on Dec 2024
macrumors should be asking these questions to apple and reporting how its going to be.
its ridiculous we need to be guessing about this when apple has a time line for this.

The EU's Digital Market Act does not apply to Macs, just to iPhones and iPads. Whether or not a platform is regulated by the law is determined by the company's revenue and the platform's number of EU users.
So Apple will definitely permit Apple Intelligence on Mac’s in the EU? That’s not clear in the reporting I’ve read.

That's what it sounds like, at least according to this article.
Due to the Digital Markets Act, Apple Intelligence will not be available on the iPhone and iPad in the EU, with the features limited to Macs with the M1 chip or newer there. Apple said it is discussing this issue with the European Commission.

The 9to5mac article had this explanation:
Regarding the legal issues with the EU and China, Apple says it is in ongoing talks with regulators. For the EU, the Digital Markets Act blocks Apple from launching Apple Intelligence on iPhone and iPad right now. However, it is currently enabled in the macOS Sequoia 15.1 developer beta, as macOS is not deemed a gatekeeper platform.

And France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, ARENT in the EU??? Is this rally EU politics? Or is it apple again??
We, in Holland had to wait 7 years for a Dutch speaking Siri. And even then she didnt understand half of what we were saying.
The past 5 years i have counted SITXY ONE (!) nice goodies that were "US ONLY" sometime US and 3 other country's.
We pay around 20-30% more then people in the US, and were getting less and less!
They are still their own independent countries that can make their own laws.

I don’t know about you, but I am really looking forward to Apple’s earning call Q1 next year. By freezing the EU out of Apple Intelligence we are gonna find out very quickly how AI really does influence product sales.

We will know very soon if the AI hype is there or not. And it will be Apple, and the EU, that delivers that information.

Apple Intelligence will start rolling out to the public in U.S. English only when iOS 18.1 is released in October, but additional languages will be added over the next year. The features are compatible with any iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 16 model.

Apple told publications including The Verge that Apple Intelligence will support the following previously-unannounced languages in 2025:

  • English (India)
  • English (Singapore)
  • German
  • Italian
  • Korean
  • Portuguese
  • Vietnamese
Apple previously announced that support for versions of English spoken in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the U.K. will be added in December, and that support for Chinese, French, Japanese, and Spanish will be added next year.

iOS 18.1 is already available in beta for developers, and it includes Apple Intelligence features such as writing tools for proofreading text, notification summaries, suggested replies in the Messages app, the ability to record and transcribe phone calls, and a new "Clean Up" tool in the Photos app that can quickly remove objects from a photo.

Here's the full list of languages that are now known:

  • English (U.S.) (October 2024)
  • English (Australia) (December 2024)
  • English (Canada) (December 2024)
  • English (New Zealand) (December 2024)
  • English (U.K.) (December 2024)
  • English (South Africa) (December 2024)
  • Chinese (2025)
  • French (2025)
  • Japanese (2025)
  • Spanish (2025)
  • English (India) (2025)
  • English (Singapore) (2025)
  • German (2025)
  • Italian (2025)
  • Korean (2025)
  • Portuguese (2025)
  • Vietnamese (2025)

Makes me smile (/laughing) to hear about Apple Intelligence in e.g. German, because the last years the text editing function e.g. in iMessages or Mail through dictation and proposals while typing words, both became worse than ever 🤣

Even names of Contacts aren't written correctly – this you would really need in daily work

So, Craig Federighi, maybe you push the wrong priorities

Another is Mail (with a lot of best known bugs over the last decade) or many other ergonomic details which would make work with Mac or iPhone easier each day... (e.g. to store a new calendar event with ENTER (the ok-button in blue color indicates this function, but...)
or
to program reminder rings for Calendar events in iOS as much as in macOS
or
the FINDER failures in file search (sometimes files aren't found even in the same folder)

and... I would know a lot more

From the responses I have read on this post, I think some people here are missing the bigger point Apple is trying to make. Apple will have the technology available in German, French, Spanish, Portuguese etc even if the EU doesn’t allow for the use of AI on iPhones. They are basically telling the EU “we’re ready, now do your part”.
Also, I am a native Portuguese speaker and I live in the UK. Like myself, there are millions of German, French, Spanish native speakers living outside of the EU, so wouldn’t it be great if I and all these other people, that chose to live out of the EU, could use the AI if we wanted?

And don't forget there is a little thing called South America. Portuguese Spanish and French are spoken there too

The post was edited as it was directed to countries ;) A lot of the comments came from before the edit. Now it is languages. Huge difference.

I would love that, please let it be in the Colombo deparment store, or even better, in Chiado, that would be so cool
I think we’ll see cows flying before that happens. Think Dublin for example, a super rich international city, Apple European HQ located in the country, and still no Apple stores. Actually the only Apple Store on the island is in Belfast, but that is in the UK not in the Republic of Ireland.
I would love to see an Apple Store in Lisbon don’t get me wrong, but I doubt there’s enough market to justify them opening one over there.

Yeah I probably read only the original 😊
Yup, when I read it originally I could swear it stated Germany, not German, and France not French, and Portugal not Portuguese etc. It was edited at 9:30pm last night, my guess is due to the comments and feedback.

Let me get this straight. There are eight English languages but only one Chinese?

Chinese is not a language. It’s a nationality.

Also, what about French? Spoken Metropolitan French is quite different from Québecois French - much more different than American English is from Canadian English.
