AI was the iPhone 16 buzzword. I got ours because we wanted the most recent in case 20 JAN puts a pause in the ability to get stuff from China, especially at the already high prices that may seem cheap later.

I messed with AI for an hour or so and turned it off. It is totally unnecessary in my wife's and my lives.

We do messages and email, but most importantly we use them their primary purpose - make and receive calls.

We also upgraded all our Macs to the M4 family. So if the fan blades get discolored, we will be operational for quite awhile.

Since it's not yet fully ready to go, nor released, at least Apple isn't prominently marketing Apple Intelligence as a key feature of iPhone 16

Oh wait...

I’ve come to believe that Apple Intelligence is an oxymoron! After 23 years of “basic” Siri and a few months of AI, I still have to open WhatsApp and re-read the last message I received from anyone because when I ask Siri to read the last message I got from anyone, it looks for a NEW message and if it is not there, it will tell you “I can’t find any message from….”
Intelligent?!? My arse!

I see electron cobwebs forming inside the iPhone in the wasted space. Apple should have never put any of the AI stuff in it until is was truly operational.

Perhaps our recent Apple ad experience is a good example of false advertising to generate sales for a non-functioning software package. Perhaps the unreleased alpha software ran their demos in a very controlled narrative. The actors do what they are told by the producers.

It may well be that Apple's AI is non-functional until the model 17 or 18 exist. A drowning man will grasp at straws....

What a silly opinion piece there.. Apple intelligence is not even really here yet. On screen awareness and LLM Siri will be the real deal, probably even going further into the future, some sort of „on-Vision-awareness“ like chatgpt previews earlier last year for the Apple Vision Pro. When you’re able to look at stuff and converse with Siri about what you’re looking at, that’s gonna be when things become interesting!
Too bad they didn’t throw their resources on that instead of making genmoji and image playground the priority. Had on-screen awareness and a much smarter Siri come out first things might have been different. On screen awareness is a big deal. And people have been hoping for a smarter Siri for years now.

The delay between the Apple Intelligence introduction in June 2024 and a launch even after iPhone 16 models came out was a contributing factor
This is what happens when you are a software company that only profits off the hardware and services you sell tailored to that software - and then you don't deliver on the software.

I could’ve told Tim this information two years ago for free and saved him the hassle and money. Of course no one wants AI slop on their personal devices, and especially not the half baked embarrassment that is Apple Intelligence.
I’d imagine that you could count on one hand the number of people who purchased a new iPhone specifically for AI.
The biggest issue on Apples part is timing, AI features have crept their way into existing apps already and people are aware that they could access these things before Apple even got their foot in the door.
I genuinely think they would have made more waves by publically eschewing the AI craze and doubling down on promoting apps focused on human creativity.
And just a quick reminder, AI art is for grifters and thieves, ted talk over.

You should have.

I do and I want to experiment with it.

I highly doubt it.

Mostly in the wild AI is just slop. Apple Intelligence I can see where they are going and I like it

Never bet against Apple. Like the house, they mostly always win. ;)

This was honestly the first year I haven't upgraded my iPhone in nearly a decade. There is just no real difference from my 15 Pro Max, and Apple's generative AI is just abysmal. It must be trained by Siri.

Apple Intelligence in its current state keeps Apple in the game. Without it, sales would have been lower, IMO. And, more importantly, sales in the coming years would even be lower.

And Apple’s focus on privacy with AI is quite significant and is different from what all other players are doing. I know that many people don’t seem to care about privacy, but some do. I believe the value of privacy will become more apparent as AI takes on more and more prominence in everyday activities.

Totally agree -- this the stance and play I would have expected from Pre-Tim as CEO Apple

And it would have been widely lauded by many ... and would have further driven an ideological division between Apple and others ... in a very good way

There’s almost nothing about apple intelligence worth using or is any good. The photo touch up tool is awful which apple of course says it is deliberately bad; so why even have it? The other features such as the notification summaries are weak at best. Apple should just realise they got this wrong - it’s as bad as the launch of Apple Maps in its ineffectiveness

Here are some suggestions what Apple could use AI for that would make sense to the user:
1. smart speech to text. Easy to use, cleaning all those ems and ehhs, maybe with variable "written perfection" levels.
2. smart reading experience: Auto zooming and screen layouting files and pdfs to provide some "teleprompter" style interactive progress based on eye movements of the reader using the selfie camera. Possibly voice assisted.
3. auto reply to avoid "legitimate interest" forms and other annoying browsing elements. Fill out your data preferences once and have every form auto completed without backdoors like you decided forever.
4. filter and suppress repeated ads and intrusive station breaks including negative user feedback signal.

But look at Apple Maps today. It is pretty useful imo.

If normal people feel only 10% as strongly as I do about this, it wouldn't be a surprise. I for one aggressively *hate* the idea of a computer reading and writing for me, and I utterly despise the very idea of generated "art" (which isn't art) to the point of foaming at the mouth and having spurious tantrums.

It would be one thing if the AI were merely a stupid idea, but this is intrusively disgusting!

However, the current Mac line-up is great. *That's* what drove me to buy two ones in the past three years (most recently a MacBook Pro M4, which is outstanding).

Well lets see first what Siri will be with Apple AI. I use ChatGPT on a regular basis and it's a time saver like when we switched from typewriters to computers. So please Apple don't screw this up.

To be honest, the focus on AI is putting me off Apple. They have a lot of work to do especially with iPadOS to make it actually feasible in a work environment. iOS development seems to have stalled as well, to play catchup with AI companies.

I’m looking at a Fairphone for my next one. That should last a while and I would have peace from this endless barrage of Apple telling me that I need to desperately crave interaction with a hearing impaired virtual assistant. I kind of like having a smartwatch, though and that I haven’t solved yet – none of the Android compatible options are very good.

I am tired of the nonsense and just want to focus on getting stuff done. Not teaching some server side app to write mediocre prose or draw garish pictures.

I consider AI on device. But AI needs to be more resource friendly. One Thing Apple could do is Integrating Apple Intelligence to iCloud. So we can Backup our AI data and restore it whenever needed. Or just Push all the AI data encyrpted to the cloud. And only Download and use the data which is currently neede ld for specitic scenarios. No 3rd Party Intergration or something Like that. Jus apple as it is. They need the best AI employes they can get right now to catch up.
