Yes, I’m wondering how long until we get the Apple Vision Pro pivot and then people are all of a sudden trying to convince us that “Apple Intelligence was never meant for the mainstream market yet”

Lol

“it’s the future! … just not yet…and not this version …but it’s still a great product from Apple!”

Pretty sure that's already happened here, and like most of the AVP threads should be pretty easy to find since there's not a lot of engagement heh

In the current state, of course Apple Intelligence is not driving anything. AI across the board is hype. This is why I am holding out hope for better upgrades in Apple software next year, especially for iPad, rather than more AI promises.Honestly, I have yet to see a single part of Apple Intelligence that really should require any of the current hardware.

People say they don't want "AI" but then say they want a smarter Siri, They say they don't want AI, but still read the text transcriptions of voice mail. They don't want AI but want better summaries of their emails. They don't want AI but they ask for a better predictive keyboard for their phone.

Then they say they don't see the need for expensive hardware but at the same time complain if Apple "spies" on them and does the transcriptions and summaries on a server.

Why would it drive sales? It hasn’t resulted in some super improved overall user experience nor even a single killer “I’ve got to have that” kind of feature yet.

So far we’ve seen baby steps towards making Siri useful which will be a big deal if they nail it, a few useful tools for improving written content, tools to better search through and curate photos, a cool addition to clear objects you don’t want from photos and some gimmicks for generating animated imagery.

I’ll occasionally use the writing tools and being able to remove things from pictures is cool but usually if I take a picture with a person or thing in it that’s by design so it’s not like I’ll really be using the photo clean up feature often. I don’t have a bunch of photos I need help searching through and I’ll never use image playground or genmoji.

What we’ve seen so far are a series of nice, small things but there is nothing in there yet that’s compelling enough for me to go out there and buy a new iPhone.

If they nail Siri’s re-write that’s the kind of thing I’d go and buy a new phone for. Give me an assistant that I can have an actual conversation with that can then go into apps and make things happen that I’d normally have to do on my own. Let me learn some things or look things up I’m having trouble recalling via a quick conversation. That’s what’ll drive sales of new hardware in the end. Considering how far behind Apple was it’s going to take time to catch up and when that happens it will drive sales.

It's not just the immaturity of AI on smartphones but also its application. I can see AI being useful for natural language commands to the phone or for the phone using voice to advise you of appointments etc while interacting with multiple apps etc. Thing is, beyond that it's basically a gimmick and likely to stay that way for a few years. Hence why everyone is underwhelmed with the latest iOS as Apple did all the gimmicky stuff first and it's all really alpha stuff pretending to be feature complete and left the hard bit, which is Siri until last.

Too bad they didn’t throw their resources on that instead of making genmoji and image playground the priority. Had on-screen awareness and a much smarter Siri come out first things might have been different. On screen awareness is a big deal. And people have been hoping for a smarter Siri for years now.
Absolutely. Nobody needs Genmoji- but those were probably low hanging fruits for them..

That’s an easy reason why. A rather large portion of the population either don’t care about AI or are wary about AI. As an artist, I’m very anti AI due to so much of it trained on theft of intellectual property. And with so many people growing up on movies or stories where AI ends up turning evil, can you blame them for being wary? Even the people who were vaguely interested are starting to get worn out because it feels like AI is constantly being shoved down everyone’s throats by so many companies
It's not just the low level of trust towards "A.I.". It's the even lower trust towards the humans behind it.

Also, I know it's not the same thing, is it just me who has seen more than a couple of ads on YouTube from people usually with a British accent, selling software or access to A.I. which will write a whole ebook for you or something similar? WTF is the point?
Tell you what buddy, you make the A.I. write the book for you, and I will let the A.I. read it.

This is also the consequences of an arrogant approach from Apple, which completely underestimated Europe - in which it does not support all its services (especially AI).
Apple should unite the whole EU (as one country), offer English (which is the official EU language) by default and offer the same services to all countries. AI must be solved as soon as possible and to the maximum extent without limitations. People around me buy Pixels instead of iPhones and laugh at Apple. That's a big fail, Apple...

Let’s be honest—ever since Apple removed the SIM tray, sales have decreased. Who in America wants to be stuck with a phone that resellers can’t sell in other countries due to the inconvenience of eSIM? It’s a frustrating decision. Frankly, Apple made a poor move here, which explains why Android phones are gaining more traction and why many people are hesitant to upgrade from the iPhone 13. Whoever at Apple thought following Verizon’s idea of locking users in with eSIM was a good idea clearly didn’t think it through. It is not even about the design anymore. People would still buy if there is a sim tray. Biggest reseller was people buying it from US and resell the US model to china or other asian country. China does not like esim and other country dont even want esim. No one want to be lock in and be country by their carrier or government. APPLE IS STUPID.

Here's the thing.

I may still be using a 13 pro max, but it also means that I have not moved to an android handset.

People thinking this will lead to a mass exodus from iOS to android will be sorely disappointed, not least as Apple reports that their install base continues to grow.

Have they ?

I think the phone is safer. Can’t remove the SIM card.

Many Android phones are cheaper than iPhones and that explains a lot to me.

E-sim will eventually be the way.

"Apple Intelligence Isn't Driving iPhone Upgrades"

Well, many consumers seem to be more intelligent than "Apple Intelligence"...

Apple Intelligence hasn't convinced people to buy an iPhone 16, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today. According to Kuo, a supply chain survey suggests Apple Intelligence is not pushing people to upgrade their devices.

The delay between the Apple Intelligence introduction in June 2024 and a launch even after iPhone 16 models came out was a contributing factor, and Apple Intelligence "appeal has significantly declined" compared to cloud-based services like ChatGPT.

There is also no indication that Apple Intelligence will drive Services revenue, as Apple CEO Tim Cook said in December that Apple has never discussed charging for Apple Intelligence. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said that Apple could start charging for Apple Intelligence in 2027 or beyond, but it remains to be seen if that will happen.

All in all, Kuo does not feel that Apple Intelligence is going to benefit Apple in terms of user upgrades or revenue, but there's some hope for the long-term prospects.

Apple Intelligence was the main focus of iOS 18, but when the iPhone 16 models launched in September, there were no Apple Intelligence features available. Writing Tools and other capabilities came in the first update to iOS 18 in October, but Image Playground and Genmoji didn't roll out until December.

There are still Apple Intelligence features that have not been implemented, including major changes to Siri that are rumored to be coming in April.

A December survey suggested that many iPhone users feel that Apple Intelligence has added little or no value to their iPhone experience, though that sentiment could change as Apple Intelligence matures.

Too late and with insignificant features compared to what you can do with any phone that supports the chatgtp app. Apple lost so much time and effort on VR when the next killer tech was AI in your hand

Apple Intelligence was one of the reasons I didn't upgrade my iPhone this year. I typically upgrade every year.
That doesn’t make a lot of sense. You “typically” upgrade your phones every year, but this year you didn’t because of a feature that doesn’t have to be enabled in the first place?

Can we please try to keep things fun and jovial around here?

It's nice to see all the different perspectives on these topics

I usually stay away from replies like this and this is #2 thus far. Any post is fair game for a reply within the rules. And there’s irony in commenting on my post when you’ve done the same thing as you accuse me of doing.

Oh and you never answered my question about compensation. Wonder why?

Oh. And I was asking for more perspective from the poster.

Remember when 5G was going to change the world? We all have it now, and it's now better than 4G for most people, but honestly didn't change much. I expect something similar from AI. It will eventually make a better Siri and provide better helpful information, but it won't really change much.

Frankly, it's been years since phones have made big improvements, which is why people don't upgrade as often.
