The inside story on exactly why Siri has been so neglected and fumbled by Apple over the years will be interesting, if we ever get enough leakers telling us what happened. The overall picture is that, despite Apple being a draw for talent and having huge amounts of money, they rarely if ever put truly good programmers onto Siri, or not enough of them, and/or they were hampered by bizarre unproductive ideas from management who put most of their attention elsewhere, but the specific details would be worth knowing.

This why they need to stop releasing new hardware and focus on the software they so busy releasing new devices they barely focusing on software it doesn’t matter how powerful the hardware is if the software is still behind
nah. Different teams. Different skills. Those teams work together at times but that's all. And Apple can hire more if they think that would help.

Remember when apple used to underpromise and over-deliver? Those were the days. This **** now of announcing stuff but then being like "maybe it will come with this OS we don't even know" is such a lame move. Either have it ready when you announce or don't announce it at all. Then again they would have pretty much nothing to announce at WWDC since they keep 80+% of the new features behind "coming later."
but it is no one's fault but your own if you believed them. it isn't the first time apple has failed to deliver. "fool me once, shame on apple. ..."

People will probably just say I’m coping but honestly, I don’t even care. I was never a big fan of voice assistants and ever since Siri came to the iPhone I have rarely ever used it and for mainly simple tasks it continues to do just fine. Also, I am thinking more and more that AI is vastly overhyped and not that revolutionary in day to day tasks for the average person. This is why Apple Intelligence features sucking doesn’t even bother me. In fact, I have it all turned off. I’ve tried all the other AI’s and apart from maybe using ChatGPT for search now then Google, I rarely ever use them. I have no interest in an AI “agent”, which is what all these companies are racing to get out.

I just want Apple to return to polishing their software and fix bugs instead of racing out AI and trying to create more ways to generate more subscription revenue.
I couldn’t disagree more. I’m using AI more and more. I had a really large spreadsheet with tons of data in it this week I needed to work with. My SQL is not nearly what I’d like it to be or on the level required to get what I needed. I took me 5 mins to input my requirements in regular English and ai built all the filters, formulas and output into a separate table I could work with in about 15 seconds. That’s magic and only a simple example. From there, all the charts I wanted were only a prompt away. This is now standard stuff, even on a lot of phones.

Perhaps conversation Siri is being pushed now and context Siri is seen as negative? Perhaps this change of thinking has to with AVP management move to AI?

Agree. I think the key to something like AI is to not run to it but not run away either. Instead just keep your eyes open for when it may help then give it a try. At first you may only rarely use it but as you see what it can do you will just find yourself using it more and more.

Just give up. Apparently Siri cannot be fixed the way Apple is operating now. Do it another way.

Delete Siri. Have the OS directly integrated with an AI like ChatGPT or other partners to perform all assistant and AI functions, and let the user choose whether to enable it.

Also, as people are getting used to ChatGPT and others, they are becoming even less patient with Siri and Apple. For example, I have gotten used to assuming that the tech can grasp some context in what I say, so just last night:

Me: Siri, play XYZ (a well-known song)
Siri: (said nothing, displayed a list of movies with that name, not available via any of my subscriptions, and I didn't even know there were movies with that name)
Me: No! I meant the song! (I assumed Siri had context, because I've become used to it in even the worst of AI)
Siri: (started to play a random song, but not XYZ)
Me: Siri, play XYZ in Apple Music
Siri: (starts to play the correct song)

It was a frustrating experience and unexpected even with me knowing how stupid Siri was.
That's my experience with Siri on homepods! Hey Siri, play song by artist. Random song starts.

This whole integration has been a total disaster, it’s slow, most of the times does not even work and it asks do you want to use chatgpt - might as well just use chatgpt. Just terrible Apple! Who ever decided this would be cool needs to have their noghin roll.

Hardware is their cash cow. Their software development is subpar.

And how many carrier ads did I see over the holidays touting iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro “with Apple Intelligence” as if it’s some must have feature?

I feel like we’re in two separate worlds: one world driven by shareholders who need to hear specific buzzwords in marketing and advertising; then another world, the real world, where Siri is still stupid and all we got was a new Siri animation.

Yeah, it’s such a tone deaf take. I also have it turned off, but not because AI sucks or it’s useless (it’s not), but because Apple’s implementation of it is an absolute joke. Generating emojis and photo editing features which result in laughable outcomes is NOT what AI is about.

I am still waiting for Siri to remind me that I forgot my coffee on the car top, like Eddy promised.

This personal awareness is child’s play in front of that.

Apple's smarter version of Siri that incorporates Apple Intelligence features could end up being delayed, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple is running into engineering problems and software bugs that could push back the launch of the new functionality.

Apple-Intelligence-General-Feature.jpg

Rumors suggested that Apple planned to introduce the new Siri features in iOS 18.4, but the first iOS 18.4 beta is expected as soon as next week, and it appears Siri won't be ready in time.

Apple has already promised that Apple Intelligence will be available in new languages in April, suggesting that's when the iOS 18.4 update will launch, so Apple has a limited amount of time to get Siri ready to go. Some features may now need to be postponed until May later, with Apple perhaps planning to introduce them in an iOS 18.5 update.

Apple has promised three Apple Intelligence features for Siri, including personal context to better understand and respond to requests, the ability to do more in and between apps, and on-screen awareness to respond to requests that involve content the user is looking at. Employees testing the new Siri features have reportedly said that they are not yet working consistently.

Major new features rarely come as late as May, because Apple typically transitions to working on the next-generation version of iOS in June after WWDC.

Gurman says that Apple could still debut the features in iOS 18.4, but turn them off by default as testing continues until iOS 18.5, and in that case, we'd still see the new functionality in iOS 18.4. We should be getting the first iOS 18.4 beta soon, though it is not likely that Siri will be in the initial beta given today's report.

So really false advertising, as iPhone 16 was marketed as the first iPhone designed from the ground up for Apple Intelligence and yet we barely have any of the Apple Intelligence features...embarrassing!

This is happening with just about everything these days! Look at Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the people who bought it are essentially beta testers because it was released before it was even close to ready! This needs to stop as customers do not want to beta test (unless we pay/volunteer to) and would respect companies much more if they delayed products/features until ready!

You mean like introducing Siri over 13 years ago? :D
I didn’t use Siri on the iPhone 4S, but I did use it on the iPhone 5. I think it worked better than it does now. What you could do was a lot more limited, but it seemed more reliable.
Agree with this but they need to work on managing expectations better.
I think they did OK (not great) on that front, but news and rumour sites rarely didn’t help. Somehow, coming in iOS 18 became coming in iOS 18.0.

Not really surprised. As everything already part of Apple Intelligence is still in beta.

I really just want to be able to translate everything seen on the screen with a single tap or messages to be able to Auto translate like on Android / Samsung.

I don't like talking to my tech in general when I can do the same with a few buttons myself. Therefore Siri never had much use for me.

Not surprised. Expecting changes only just before iOS 19 launches. Was waiting to see how much Siri will improve.

Very disappointed with Apple, TBH, you could say that at this moment there is no relevant improvements in Europe.

It's so that now with the trade commercial war between USA and Europe I'm thinking of changing to the new Samsung because with the tariff increase at the end of year it could be mostly impossible to buy a new iPhone.

I was also expecting a new Ultra Watch and nope...Apple is stuck. Apple misses Steve Jobs badly.
