The 20" ACD is S-IPS.

I haven't seen a 20" Dell with an S-IPS yet, all the ones on their site have TN panels including the 207WFP and the 2009W.

Not that they aren't great monitors as far as TN panels go, but they will never compare to IPS. And the updated H-IPS panels that NEC and Eizo sell have their prices in line with the ACDs and other monitors in their class.

The Dell 2007 WFP were S-IPS.

Dell Started to send some S-PVA without notice causing quite a controversy but you could distinguish the panel type from the serial number last letter:

And yes all seven of my 2007WFP are S-IPS with the identical S-IPS panel as my 20" ACD

Why? Seriously, why is everyone going to glass? What is wrong with matte?

Does it cost less to take a matte screen and slap a piece of glass over it, versus not adding the piece of glass ?

because of greenpeace. I can't think of another reason.

GLASS MONITORS SUCK!
Who the F wants a reflection in their monitor? I don't get it....
More like Windows machines every day.
The apple is slowly turning brown.

Apple knows where the money is: consumers.

Creative professionals be damned. It's a pity too because they were Apple's biggest supporter and advocate. All they are doing is alienating the pro crowd with these moves. This time next year the only Mac Pro you'll be able to buy will be in the refurb section, because they'll be discontinued.

And all the YouTube videos will be made by people with glossy screen Macbooks using USB crapola video cameras and editing their work in iMovie 08 on a craptastic displayport-only super glossy overpriced display.

Sad part is, even PC makers weren't putting this much gloss in their machines. BUT, you are right in saying that Apple is turning into a not as great as before computer company.

Not Microsoft, but drastically in the other direction. For consumers it's not that big of a deal unless you are waiting for Blu-Ray.

thanks for the info rtheb, good stuff to know.

Wow. Great! A new Apple 24" display. WOOT.

Oh, wait. Ummm. I spent 4k on a Mac Pro 3 months ago.. and.. hmm... ummm, it's not compatible?

Sad day when Mac is not compatible with Mac.

Total Load of Horse Sh*t.

I will keep using my lovely Samsung 24" display that I paid $400 for.

Big Middle Finger Right Back at You STEVE!

It's times like these when I think of the threads about people dropping their iphone in water and asking advice if they should try and get a replacement. So many people shout "no, it's dishonest." Well, times like these make me think "they don't care about us, so f*ck 'em"

Neuroguy

Damn it, Neuroguy, calm down! Just take a moment and breath in....relax for just a sec. Now, the new displays are going to include the mini-to-dvi adapter. Sheesh. I thought your were gonna blow up man.;)

The real tragedy is that most of the "consumers" don't have a clue what we are even talking about..S-IPS, S-PVA, S-MVA, TN Film.

"Gee it has an :apple: logo it must be quality."

And to think I was looking forward to today with such great anticipation...:(

um buy display, buy a displayport to dvi adapter (wouldn't be surprised if apple makes one) and have your new display - Not ideal but if you want the monitor that much

Well if it's hdcp compatible I might just do that...

Unless we have a new Mac, we're screwed?????????????????????????????????????

I wasn't too keen on this at first, but actually, if I was to get a new MacBook, perhaps I could finally replace my iMac (desktop) for good. After all, the new MacBook is just as good as most other generic desktop models, and with the Cinema Display, keyboard and mouse, the MacBook could make an effective desktop system.

However, does the MacBook have to remain open for the Cinema Display to work? Or will I be able to close the lid?

You'll have to clarify. I actually haven't used a Windows machine with a glossy screen, because at least with Windows, you get a choice of the hardware it runs on, including the display.

I think new displays for professionals will come at MWSF in January alongside new designed Mac Pro's. This LED display is aimed only at consumer level not professional IMHO.

I am pretty sure Apple will not abandon their most loyal base. At least I hope so.

They already have. When I'm on location, I bring my MBP and cameras with me. Do I need to tug along a display too? How can I adjust color and edit my photos when on the road with the new MBP? Glossy screens are great for consumers, but for folks in the color business [which are like 95% Mac folks], this is a *big* let down. Yes, we still have the great 3 displays with matte finishes, but when we're on the road, we use our laptops. As powerful as they have become, they really are like a desktop away from the office, so they should offer a display to match. Until today, they did.

I have never been as disappointed with a new product rollout/update as I have been today. At least offer a matte option [even if it costs us more!]. This would have made a big difference to a lot of Pro users.

They do have Adapters mini-to-dvi you will be able to get. A user just posted it back a the last page.
May have adapters. A poster quoted a support person they talked to.

I just don't want a rumor to turn to truth too quickly. Everything Apple has made public suggests no adapter.

Which group has bigger numbers? Price-whiners or gloss-whiners?

I find the "Apple is forcing me to buy something too expensive that I don't like and can't use" posts the most humorous, although I have to admit an occasional chuckle at the "Despite enormous growth in sales in a down market, Apple's refusal to build what I'm asking for proves they have no product sense."

Many think the economic downturn hasn't taken effect. Apple have apparently already equalled last years sales, with a quarter to go. Let's see how much their year-on-year growth is before reaching any conclusions. This being the last quarter, I'd expect large growth. Anything less than 12% would mean they failed. This is theirs to lose. It seems a lot, but if you think that any sales they make from now are purely growth figures, it doesn't seem unreasonable.

In the UK, the new monitor is $1,133. Would you really say that's a fair price? I'm not going to complain - I like the product, I want the product, if I can't afford the product, I'm a little disappointed, but Apple are at a bigger loss by losing potential money. Prices like that make me think they don't want my business.

As for the people complaining about the lack of pro features: I don't think this is a pro monitor. It's tough - Apple clearly think glossy displays are adequate for prosumers, but they haven't introduced enough of this range to replace their current lineup, meaning that it's not a direct replacement. The 30" is prohibitively expensive, but the 20" shouldn't be. The marketing also seems to indicate that this is part of a new, consumer-focussed display family rather than an ACD replacement. The price begs to differ, though.

I agree, perfect comment and it extends to the failure that is the MBP. I knew that it was going the consumer route, but Apple went far beyond anything I could have seen.

It's really a step backward on the Pro side in my honest opinion.

I don't see the MBP as a failure. A price drop would have been welcome, but the only real complaint anybody can have is the glossy-only display. That's bad, but it's not major. Proper use of colour profiles and getting used to the product and it should be fine. Perhaps not quite as good as the matte, but certainly not Earth-shatteringly bad.

i think it looks great. I will probably get one in the future when a new MacPro will be released with a displayport

Worst "One more thing..." ever

Is it me, or was that event plain anticlimactic? :(

Worst "One more thing..." ever. Steve just seemed bored throughout. But seriously, "one more thing" for the product everyone's expecting the most? Seriously?? What happened to the drama? The excitement?

apparently you can daisy chain displayport. so in the future you would be able to connect up to 3 1080p displays to your laptop via 1 displayport. pretty awesome!

its also bi-directional, which means in the future, you can use a monitor as a microphone and camera without USB.

Even with an adapter, I cannot use this on my current MBP, as the cable for it is this weird three-in-one deal... Now, my USB and Power are on one side and my video out on another!

I am sorry, but I've had to suck it up with my iPhone not being compatible with older peripherals, and my older iPod not being compatible with newer software updates, and now I can't use an Apple external monitor with my MBP I bought five months ago for $2K?

Pardon me, but that's stupid.

I work in an Apple center and most of the users want glossy displays even on MBP. It is a shame there is no choiche in MBP. But they are great.

i think the cable system is genius if you have a new macbook or mbp but for older versions it seems a little annoying. I have a huge problem with the $900 price tag, it's just crazy talk imo.

i believe you can use the monitor, you just can't use the usb hub or magsafe power connector with it.
