This display is not a replacement for the professional Cinema Displays I think. It's targeted to people who (like me) have only one computer (a laptop) and want something like a docking station and a bigger display for when they are at home.

The magsafe connector and the mini-displayport clearly tell us: "this is a laptop companion". The iSight an microphone are nice to have because

a) if you're using the external display and the laptop's display at the same time (extended desktop), you'll like to have the big display as primary one. For iChat or skype, you'll want to look at the big display. If you were using the latop's iSight, the camera angle would suck gretly

b) you like the desktop feeling at home and have a nice mouse and keyboard connected to the display's USB hub. When you get home, you take out the laptop out of the bag, keep it closed and just connect the display's cable to the 3 ports of the laptop. Nice advantage: if you spill something over your laptop (happened to my Macbook...), it's not that tragic unless it's really acid. The new Macbooks have a rubber thingy surrounding the whole display bezel. Seems to me like this makes it pretty water-tight. Just don't spill stuff into the rear vent or the ports. :)

I went to the Apple Store and played around with this new display.

Image Quality: Superb. Perfectly uniform backlighting, colors, sharpness. CRT-grade, I'd say. I tested it with some gray gradient patterns and saw zero banding. Backlighting I tested with solid blues and blacks fullscreen - it's all uniform, none of the "brighter lower half" problems that most LCDs have. I'm absolutely certain that it's an IPS panel.

Gloss: Unfortunately, it's highly reflective. Mirror-like. I wonder if any antiglare shields would alleviate this?

$900. Expensive, but not a bad deal for an IPS and LED in one screen. If only they offered a matte finish!

Man that monitor is cheap on features.

One one input? Only Glossy? WTF I've been waiting years for them to upgrade and they come out with this crap that looks nice but does nothing.
Well at least now big brother can watch mac laptop users from 2 different angles.

I really waited quite a long time for new Cinema Display and Macbook Pros as well. I needed to replace my wife's old iBook and was really looking forward to the event.

Unfortunately I cannot stand glossy displays. On wednesday I ordered one of the "old" 15" Macbook Pros and an "old" 23" Cinema Display.

I would have really loved LED backlight on the Cinema Display and I can definitely see the difference but it is totally not worth it if you get a glossy display in addition.

The "old" Macbook Pro for my wife already arrived friday and I myself have an 17" Macbook Pro from mid 2007 that doesn't have the LED backlight.

At the moment I have both laptops sitting next to each other and the LED backlight is clearly better (the old Macbook Pros from early this year already had LED backlight where as mine from mid 2007 doesn't have it)

The Cinema Display will arrive next wednesday together with bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

sorry im sure this is gone over somewhere but can someone tell me if this monitor and the webcam function work with a pc. when i looked on the apple website it says system requirements are mac os and hardware

The monitor doesn't work on most macs so for pcs your out of luck.

man whats up with that

Apple no longer thinks that DVI is hip.
They replaced their ADC video port because people were fed up with having to buy adapters for anything Apple. Unless it was all Apple.
They'll most likely do it again. I will not buy a display that requires me to get more adapters.

And the last thing we want is to be segregated from PCs in terms of a Mac graphical performance. You know if Apple goes with this mini port across the line again Macs will be a generation or two behind PCs in graphics card specs. Like with Apple's ADC.

unless apple updates all the rest of acd line with glossy finished, there's no reason to be upset..... yet.

but, it does kind of look like theyre taking everything glass for whatever reason. so it could very well be no matte on the updated acd's whenever they come out

Cinema Pro display...

Did any of you guys think of, that this display may actually be, exactly what Apple says it is, a display ment for the MacBook's, not a display for the Pro market?
If it were, why wouldn't they mention Mac Pro?

Rumor:

Apple 32” Cinema Pro UHD OLED display

A lot of people were disappointed when Apple introduced their new 24” Cinema Display Tuesday 14/10/08.
But as Apple says, it is made specifically for the new MacBook’s so maybe we haven’t seen it all yet.

These spy photos showed up on the internet today, and could very likely be the new Apple Cinema Pro display.

Rumor is, that it’s a 32” OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display! OLED has far superior picture quality over LCD, but so far there has been problems with the life span, as the blue tends to die out too fast.

Specs should be:

Contrast ratio: 8.000.000 : 1
Resolution: 3840 x 2160 UHD
Display colors: 1 billion
Response time: 0,2 ms
Viewing angle: 180 degree H&V
Brightness: 450 cd/m

So far the largest commercially introduced OLED is the Sony XEL-1, 11” OLED TV, which is setting new standards for stunningly beautiful video reproduction.

My god man you are expecting people to take Apples word at face value.

On the serious side I find this display simply awesome for the exact reason Apple states that is it is a companion for a laptop. My only frustration is that it does not work with my new (spring 2008) MBP. I do understand Apples moves though.

Hopefully one is delivered in a iMac variant. No really an IMac with a suitable GPU would handle it.

As to the OLED screen well in theory they ought to become cheap to replace. The worst part about them is that they need to be bonded air tight between glass. That to keep the organics from degrading in the presence of air. So more whining about glass screens.

Nice specs there! This being Apple though I can't imagine the cost. Well I can but it hurts to think about it. I do hope that there is more than one size of these things. Like a version that costs less than a vacation home in Aspen.

OLED is years away from being cost-effective to target to consumers...we'll see LED backlight before OLED

Yes they are live:

Viewing angle:
Old 23" 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)
new 24" 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)
Dell 24" UltraSharp 178º (horizontal)/178º (vertical)

Contrast Ratio:
Old 23" 700:1
New 24" 1000:1
Dell 24" 3000:1

Response Time:
Old 23" 14ms
New 24" 14ms
Dell 24" 6ms

Brightness:
Old 23" 400cd/m2
New 24" 330 cd/m2
Dell 24" 400cd/m2

Resolutions: All 1920X200

Please note:

Old 23" LCD backlight, S-IPS
New 24" LED backlight, H-IPS/S-IPS?
Dell 24" LCD backlight, S-PVA

Big difference in technology. But that being said, I saw the new 24" in the Apple Store and am uncertain about it. I think I may purchase an HP LP2475W instead (Matte finish, more inputs, H-IPS, excellent color fidelity once calibrated), but the glassy display did not seem to pick up as much glare for me as the MBPs did. I need to spend some more time with it, but considering the technology, I don't think it is overpriced.

Why do you guys keep comparing this monitor to LCDs? Of course LED monitors are more expensive. They're also much more energy efficient and last longer. I was however disappointed with the 14ms average response time. I was under the impression that LEDs could get faster than LCDs, and while Apple has never had great pixel response times, I figured they could get <10ms with these. Tech specs are here for whoever asked:

http://www.apple.com/displays/specs.html

But think of it like this: you could buy a 25 mpg sedan for $15000 that may fall apart on you tomorrow or you could get a 50 mpg sedan of the same dimensions and similar specs for $25000 that will last much longer.

I'm also assuming that there will be DVI adapters and there will be support for future imacs/mac pros.

14ms is about as fast as any other IPS panel out there at the moment - assuming it is IPS.

Agreed. This costs $2500; I'd hate to see what 32" came in at.

Steve Jobs ...
Someone asks why there are no matte screens. Answer: “The vast majority of our customers prefer a glossy finish.” http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/...le-notebook-event-2/?reflink=ATD_yahoo_ticker

After reading this forum, I find such a statement VERY difficult to believe. So, if this forum is not "the vast majority" of "pro" users, then Steve must mean the "vast majority" of all users. Wow, do many of you see parents buying their teenagers Macbook Pros with $900 desktop monitors?

This appears to be a classical case of statistics. Of course the vast majority of Apple's customers prefer glossy, because the vast majority of Apple's sales were MacBooks! Add to the fact that ALL MacBooks are glossy and that SOME users chose glossy over matte screens for the MacBook Pros and SJ can say that the vast majority prefer a glossy finish in laptops. Then add the fact that ALL iMacs are glossy . . . .

You get the point.

I think when I first heard about this from the keynote it was initially just reported as a new cinema display....

Now reading the Apple website it's quite clear that's it's purely a macbook accessory.

I guess that's fine but how many people will actually buy one? I can't see many people getting one of these to hook up to their new Macbook ....

By spending a bit extra to include a DVI port, something which many other manufacturers offer alongside display port Apple could have sold LOTS more, especially considering the old cinema displays are so out of date by now.

A truly OTT accessory product...

Apple are constantly talking about what their consumers want. I don't think they have a clue what their consumers want, either that or they know or just do the opposite.

How many macbook users have been asking for an extra display that works only with their macbook??

It is a sales gimmick. My hunch is that this new LED CD is only aimed at the MB/MBP (non-professional) crowd and that new LED ACDs with a different look will be introduced in January alongside updated Mac Pros and the new 17" MBP.

As an aside, I think the problem with the 17" MBP manufacturing process is that the ratio of length to width is too large for the thickness Apple is trying to achieve. If the ratio is too great, then the the aluminium will twist as it is machined because the thickness of the material does not offer enough strength to support the stress on the length of the material. I think Apple is going to have a hard time keeping the 17" MBP at the same spec as the 15". My guess is that the 17" with the new enclosure will necessarily be thicker.

NO!

Stop pumping this thread full of hot air please.

Won't go into detail about what the mockups are missing right now.

It's is a nice dream, but I'd rather see some 24" H-IPS panels at $1100-$1300 and FW ports.

At the high end, I'd like to see an Apple Cinema Display with 30bits like the HIP.

Based on Jobs' remark — "We're going all glass. We won't offer another version" — I conclude that Apple will never sell a 24" monitor that doesn't suck.

I've put my money where my mouth is: I bought an HP LP2475W today.

I am really considering this display. Would you care to comment or PM me concerning the HP LP2475W. I have not found one in my area to see in person, but have read the reviews. My only concerns are (1) textual clarity - is it clear or blurry and (2) some users report a faint pinkish/reddish hue when viewing the monitor from one side and a green hue when viewing it from the other - something that I think can be attributed to an A-TW polarizer.
