I'm a faculty member at a Big 10 University. Our contract price on the Dell 24" Ultrasharp is $399. So, yes, easily had for much cheaper.

I personally prefer Samsung.

well then you should know that you'll be able to get the new cinema display for less than $899 - it goes both ways...
as a buyer for a university myself, i know that we get less than "academic" pricing on apple computers.

Good price, considering all that is included.

Most 24" monitors that are cheap, only support 1680x1050 resolution. 1920x1200 is fantastic!

Shame there is no matte option though. Not really aimed at the professionals at all, the new products.

We get 10% off All Apple Products.

So, this overpriced heap will be $809.10

WHAT A STEAL!!!

Wow Apple has become the dictator of our use in the computer world if we want to use there products, instead of being open to other technology they have stated that THEY think BR is too much for the consumer to bite off(shouldn't we be the judge of that?) so they decided to not offer a CD that can be used with BR technology........or am I getting this wrong?

Ok so here is my question, i literally just bought a brand new mac pro tower and a LG blu Ray drive(plan on running Windows to be able to copy and burn BR) and was about to buy 2 Dell 24" screens but then sat back and was like lets see what the new CD's are offering.

So these screens are not compatible with even the newest built mac pro? until they possibly come out with a new video card or some adapter to go from DVI to displayport?(preferably the adapter, do to me buying a mac pro with 2 2600 cards in it), the screen only comes glossy? is it hdcp compatible at all?

wow what i used to love about Apple is there advancement in technology, think they lost that over greed, so they could somehow lock a design in that forces you to only buy Apple products.........smh

I'm starting to dislike the way Apple is forcing things on to us
The monitor is nice, no doubt, but it's way overpriced.
Now I regret buying a few Apple shares this morning.

I think the thing you guys are missing is that Apple views this as an separate line from the main Cinema Display line. They still have the 22", 24" and 30" displays for professionals, while this one is squarely aimed at the consumer market, with the iSight and mic and all that.

You can see this fact on the LED Cinema Display page itself - on the lower left, there's a icon about the regular displays. You guys who want firewire and DVI and matte, the older line is for you.

Correct but pros want the iSight feature too for videoconferencing with clients and colleagues who don't work on-site.

I agreed with you.
The way they are marketing it seems that is a separate entity.
The professional line will probably be upgrade soon and sport a similar look, but with different specs and no glossy please!

If by "most" you mean "almost none", then yeah. Otherwise, nay.

I think you are, El Jobso's comment were, I think, more related to legal and technical (programmatic) issues than price ones.
is it hdcp compatible at all?
The screen, or DisplayPort?

They're not forcing anything of you, the old ACDs are still sold at the store, and you have the option that I've selected this round: don't buy anything from apple, either buy from someone else (esp. screens, it's not like Apple makes really good screens) or wait for the next round in january.

Notebook accessory

Only works with new Apple notebook?

That's a head scratcher. You've got this gorgeous new Cinema display with iSight, mic, speakers, correct cable layout, enviro-friendliness and it can only be used as an accessory to a brand new notebook.

Sales will be crappy until they let anyone use one.

When I first saw this, I was mentally putting my 23" ACD on ebay. But this display is useless to me.

BTW, everyone: Firewire is dead. I'm not happy about it, but that's the way it is. You might as well start getting over it.

The price is ridiculous for a mediocre monitor. You can get a better monitor for half the price. This product has convinced me Apple is just producing crap these days knowing every fool will empty their wallets for mediocre products with ridiculous price tags!

Firewire is the only way to transfer video at a reliable bit rate... why would they eliminate it?

Also.. what kind of Processor is in the new mbp? montevina or ..?

Also.. that better be a PVA IPVA SPVA panel.. not just a shiny TN. Anyone know what it is?

You're kidding me

there is no way on earth I'm buying one - it's hideous!!

The same can be said for the portables...I'm so glad my 12PB runs Leopard...

It just seems to me like theres so much missing- the entry point price for their laptops are way too high- £719 for the cheapest laptop!? When companies are selling £300 laptops with the same specs it just defies belief.

£650 for a monitor that can only be used with laptops!? I know the others are still there, but they're unchanged from 5 years ago.

Macbook pros gone up by £100 too.

Its like they've cut their product presentation half way through and they left out the £500 laptop, the £1000 macbook pro and the new DVI monitors. Half their line are the old style and the other half are the new style. Who's gonna buy a 17mbp now??

This doesnt look good for the future...

And the whole HD downloads is a load of balls. HD downloads are worse quality than DVD and technically not HD. Until there's a 1080p 40mbps video download, nothing will match blue-ray. What about the thousands of FCP HD users who have yet to have a fully intergrated HD workflow? Gotta use a PC to publish any content to HD discs.

Im starting to feel apple hit their peak at the £1300 MBPs and 8 core mac pro a year ago.......

As much as that screen looks cool, I'm sad it won't work on the older model MBP I have. Although on the plus side the older Display screens are considerably lower in price. So maybe all isn't lost...
