Your monitor have integrated camera, mic and speakers ? Magsafe power adapter ?

thought not.

Haha point taken, wow i wanted two matching screens, so now I can pay for the camera and mic TWICE OVER!!!!

Hey guys, I've got an early 2008 Mac Pro...I just looked at the engadget pictures, one of them shows what looks like the all in one cable for the new macbook/macbook pros can be removed just like the power connector. Hopefully they will just release a dvi all in one connector. I could be wrong and that connector is permanently in place.

Where can I see this plug you speak of? Also where can i find the exact specs on the 24" display?

My 26" HDTV that I use as a monitor was only $500. I'm sure with the $400 I saved I could pick those up. I never use a webcam or mic. I'm not into that stuff. Why would I need a magafe power adapter for a desktop monitor. I am able to walk without bumping into stuff. I hope you buy one. Or two.

Maybe Steve likes to watch himself from the mirroring display, but I don't.
Led backlight or not, but no GLASS & GLOSSY!
Also, no dvi, fw, hdmi, hdcp.
Already got plenty of iSights & speakers...
Fogedabaudit!

I know how you feel... This must be a bloody joke. So long Pro Users...

I dont think the display thing is the major issue for pro users. Serious photo/CC users will prefer to use a lacie type display with compatible hood rather than a cinema display. Though i agree a matte HD display would have been good, official Blue ray support is more important. Whatever steve jobs says, downloads will never replace blue ray in the forseable future- a 50gb film download? Dont think so.... makes their whole "studio" concept with FC obsolete till they get HD authoring....

Brick?

Hey! Does anyone know if this thing has that stupid white brick lioke the older ACDs? I don't think it does, that's effing awesome! If it still has it, boo!

It's definitely better than HDTV, it has 1200 vertical res vs 1080. That's a paddling.

It has a camera and mic. HDTVs don't. That's a paddling.

It's LED, HDTVs are LCD. That's a paddling.

Simple connection to your new laptop. HDTVs will require an adapter. That's a paddling.

Get an ElGato Tuner, it rocks, makes your Mac into a TiVo powerhouse that automatically converts recordings to iPod or iPhone files if you wanna compare Apple to HDTV oranges.

If you're smart enough not to buy directly from Apple or at a retail outlet you will pay less than $899.

Here's to hoping there's no brick!

(Sigh)

I was hoping for something more substantial... 24", 14ms response, no backwards compatibility, glossy screen -- it seems like a really expensive way to get an iSight camera.
I don't know what planet Apple's been on recently but nobody I know likes glossy screens -- and no, we're not video professionals or anything. I just know, for myself at least, that I hate having reflections constantly bounce of the screen I'm looking at.
I'm willing to bet that this isn't a P-IVA panel like in the Samsungs too... probably a cheap IPS.
Looks like other monitors are just going to be the norm!

The link to engadget shows the backside of the monitor....The power plug is just like the ones on a new iMac...I'm just guessing that the smaller plug is the all-in-one connections for the macbook/macbook pro; and if that is like the power connector...maybe it can be removed and replaced with a different all-in-one cable.

Regarding the glossy displays- loads of people like them. Probably 90% of people like them. Apple aren't stupid (well, they are £750 entry point laptop stupid), if people didnt like these glossies, they wouldnt make them. And for anything non-professional, they blow matte displays out the water. Super saturated colours may not be realistic, but they look a lot nicer.

Sorry, but you have your panels mixed up. IPS panels are generally considered superior panels to PVA or TN panels. Again, I guess we don't know what type of panel this is, but one would assume that it's the same as the 24" iMac

I haven't read this whole thread, but I can't be the first one to point out that it looks exactly like HP's displays but with the Cinema Display stand and an Apple logo instead. Way to innovate, Apple!

BTW, everyone: Firewire is dead. I'm not happy about it, but that's the way it is. You might as well start getting over it.

I think a lot of us might have been satisfied if there were 2 or 3 Firewire ports on the back of the new 24" display. I would be.

I know, I know.... I have to get used to the reality of it all, (Firewire going bye-bye) but using USB just plain sucks... (imho) unless it's for a keyboard a mouse or a printer. UGH !!!!!!!!!

They clearly state that you can go get bent and that it's only for the new macbook line: it connects to your machine, not the other way around, and the connector is mini-displayport which -- as far as i know -- is proprietary (at least for now)

From the Apple Store Apple LED Cinema Display Page...

"Connect via Mini DisplayPort.

The LED Cinema Display attaches to your new MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air using the new industry-standard Mini DisplayPort connector. Other display connectors have you lining up pins or fumbling with screws. But the Mini DisplayPort connector is easy in, easy out."

Sounds as if it is just a standard male Display Port cable so a Display Port Female-female Adapter, a Display Port Male-DVI Female Adapter, and a DVI Male to DVI Male Cable should probable allow this display to work with a standard DVI card.

But remember the MacBook Air Superdrive should have worked on any USB outlet but Apple used proprietary firmware on the IDE to USB bridge to lock out use on anything but the MacBook Air.

I really like the "docking station" cord idea. Leave everything else plugged into the monitor and you just have to plug in the 3 headed cord. A little more elegant than it was.

I like that feature too but it would be nice if the monitor had more than just 3 USB Ports.

It could have been a legit docking station with an audio port so I can use my HK Soundsticks or headphones instead of it's built-in speakers (I'm betting so-so quality there), a few FW ports would have been sweet as well.

Really reaching here but an optical drive somewhere on/in it, would have been great for MBA users (save a port).

While we're at it put in a 320GB HD so we could use it for Time Machine (save another USB port)

Now that's a loaded External monitor/docking station!

I actually did some research online about the differences between displayport and DVI, and it seems that a simple cable probably will not be enough to adapt the signal. The digital signal coming from displayport is different than what is sent from DVI, so a cable wouldn't be able to make the conversion...you'd probably need some kind of inline converter box to convert the signal from DVI to Displayport

Do I get any points for nailing this one?

Since the new display will have DisplayPort, I'll put odds that the new laptops will have DisplayPort only. (The Nvidia chipset does DP.)

Not only does Jobs love to jump to new technology even if a bit prematurely, but the DP connector is nice and thin. (The "thin obsession" an important factor.)

Besides, that way Apple can sell you three extra price dongles (VGA/DVI/HDMI) with every laptop. Like the airlines which used to allow reasonable baggage allowances, now Apple is nickel-and-dimeing with dongles, adaptors and other things which used to be in the box.

:D :D

If this is the future of Apple's displays then all professionals that care about color are going to have to look elsewhere.

well for regular displayport yes, but this is "mini" so Apple probably has a provision where it can carry DVI signal.

Still, they should be using regular DP...you know, the ones other laptops/graphics cards/monitors use. Apple doesnt even have a minidp-dp connector to rip you off on if you, you know, want to use actual DP to connect to a real DP monitor. What a pathetic overpriced joke

Next Mini

I bet the next Mini (if it arrives) will be Display Port and use a Mag Safe connector so these screens can be used.
