Gee, would it have killed apple to include a dvi port so those of us with older computers can enjoy these new monitors? Sheesh.

Positives:
LED Backlight
Display Port
Built in iSight and mic
Built in Speakers
Pseudo-docking 3-cord easy setup
Environmentally friendly

Negatives:
Only Displayport - give me a dvi port so I can use it on my older macs!
GLOSS = ick!
Ugly black frame (I like the old look better).
I'm guessing this is some sort of PVA or TN panel, not high quality IPS.

Overall, negative, I'm not buying one.

Think I'll wait until macworld to see what they do with their pro line (Macpro's, etc),
and buy a 30" ACD then when hopefully the economy has picked up.

Don't get me wrong... I want one... but $900 for a 24" monitor? You've GOT to be kidding me! Dell's, HP's, etc. cost less than half of that! And they work with more than one type of computer... this one is tied to APPLE laptops!?!?!

Seriously though, I still want one.

A light-emitting diode (LED) (pronounced /ˌɛliːˈdiː/),[1] is a semiconductor diode that emits light when an electric current is applied in the forward direction of the device, as in the simple LED circuit. The effect is a form of electroluminescence where incoherent and narrow-spectrum light is emitted from the p-n junction.

I think the thing you guys are missing is that Apple views this as an separate line from the main Cinema Display line. They still have the 22", 24" and 30" displays for professionals, while this one is squarely aimed at the consumer market, with the iSight and mic and all that.

You can see this fact on the LED Cinema Display page itself - on the lower left, there's a icon about the regular displays. You guys who want firewire and DVI and matte, the older line is for you.

yeah but the older line still doesnt support HDCP and it looks as if the new one doesn't either, so who are they aiming this one at again?

The old ones use 4 Year old professional panels from Phillips. I would assume the new ones use the samsung panel

As far as I know S-PVA panels have much better response times. Samsung's own 24" LED has 6ms, this has 14ms which is inline with certain IPS panels.

The screen, or DisplayPort?
-Well the screen I would mean, they don't state that it is and even if it is you will now either have to buy adapter to go from a older video card with DVI outs to the displayport cable OR buy a whole new video card, i think they should offer an DVI to display port adapter with each new CD.

Then its quite the mystery.

Requires a new macbook? lol are they seriously serious?

Unfortunately they are. its more a really expensive notebook dock than a display.

As serious as whatever illness Steve (unfortunately) has.

I'm starting to wonder if the cancer spread to his cranium. From the Stalin-esque iPhone NDA to this, he's gone complete erratic.

They clearly state that you can go get bent and that it's only for the new macbook line: it connects to your machine, not the other way around, and the connector is mini-displayport which -- as far as i know -- is proprietary (at least for now)

LED back-lit

This is doing my head in.
What are we going to call LED displays when (or if) they eventually arrive?
It's so easy to say "LED back-lit display", "LED lit display" or even the slightly less accurate "LED based display" but it seems the web is awash with "LED displays".
For the last time these are LCD displays not LED displays.

Support for MacPro after all.....?

Hey guys, I've got an early 2008 Mac Pro...I just looked at the engadget pictures, one of them shows what looks like the all in one cable for the new macbook/macbook pros can be removed just like the power connector. Hopefully they will just release a dvi all in one connector. I could be wrong and that connector is permanently in place.

I bought a Hitachi 42" HDTV for only $776.00 why would I spend $900 on a apple display that can only be used with a new macbook pro. I use a 26" HDTV for my monitor with my Vista pc. That works great and my girlfriend can switch back and forth between tv and pc.

Glass enclosure ... graphic designers and photographers will have a field day trying to calibrate that thing.

yeah - because photographers would never use anything that had glass in it. Like...um...camera lenses...

Nice find. Though these displays look totally out of place with the mac pro. Though they are a nice design (probably a lot nicer in the flesh, like the new imac) i prefer the older one.
