But the 4 is the fourth model released, the 4S is the fifth, the next will be the sixth...

Calling the next iPhone the iPhone 5 would be confusing for anyone keeping track.

Actually, only us Apple nerds on here would be likely to count all of the different versions of the iPhone and expect the next one to be called iPhone 6, because it's technically the 6th iPhone released. Average consumers would likely expect the 5. Even in the MR forums everybody's "waiting for the iPhone 5". Your math is solid but the logic probably wouldn't play well with consumers.

...you do remember, all of one year ago, when Apple progressed from the 3GS (the second "3G") to the 4, right?

The 3G was called that because it ran on 3G networks, not because it was the third model. Apple called the 3GS what they did to stick with the 3 name since it was the third model. The 4 is the fourth, the 4S is the fifth, the 6 will be the sixth, etc.

What the hell did people expect? I've noted that Apple has, with their iMac and Mac Pro's - and frankly the MBP and MBA, maintained the look of these pieces for more than one model year because - they are all great designs.

This talk of a tear drop design just doesn't make any sense and it doesn't make a better phone. Bigger screen - why? Get an iPad if you want a bigger screen.

Apple is changing the way we interact and use our phones and people aren't getting it. It's not a whole lot different than when Apple pulled the floppy drive from their desktops - or now dropping the optical drive from the MBA.

I didn't expect, nor want a new different iPhone case - I love the design, the look, the feel, the fact that I've climbed mountains with my iP4 with no issues of broken glass and the only complaint I've had has been bt connection issues - which was resolved after getting a replacement phone.

I for one, think the new personal assistant is incredible and will make me that much more productive while driving - maybe game playing college students won't see the benefit, but I do.

Quoting Taggart in Blazing Saddles "Ditto!" Geez, people, can anyone suggest a better, more advanced phone (including androids which I just gave up on, for the second time...)? I absolutely love my iPhone 4. Stable. Beautiful. It just works... 4s coming my way as soon as they are out.

No, people are irritated that they don't have a good reason to upgrade. While some of the changes are nice, most people aren't compelled to change like in revisions past. It is still a very good phone, but shelling out for a contract adjustment, early upgrade, etc., for many, isn't really financially justified. People like the uniqueness of 'new'. Telling someone that you have a 4S just doesn't seem to fit that bill.

I think you're right...but it still doesn't make much sense to me. I guess I'm in the minority...I don't need to have the newest, fastest phone constantly. I sign a 2-year contract, and I get a new phone when that contract is up. I'm apparently also in the minority in that I want a phone that actually fits in my hand. Bigger is not always better, especially when it's something you need to carry with you constantly.

People that own the iPhone 4 are basically mad at Apple for not giving them a reason to spend their money to get out of their current contract and buy a new phone. It's seems to mostly be about a status symbol, which I find to be rather sad. If you're not happy with what Apple has to offer, go somewhere else. No one is forcing you to use an iPhone. Apple will go on without you. Most people that currently have anything other than a 4 (myself included) will most likely upgrade because for us, this phone is a huge step up.

You may be right. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

But I'm calling it iPhone 6 as of today lol.

Sure, and it was the fourth iPhone.

iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 6.

I will not be buying a phone that is 2 years old and be stuck with it on a 2 year contract. This is rediculous, waited months for this. They said they wanted to capture more market share, I think they failed with this one.

I for one need a smartphone that doesn't feel like huge device in my hand. I like this form factor. May you need the star tech design. You can still find them in Google. Better yet ask Google to make you a nice Star Droid. I work in IT. I DO ALL MY IT Related work on the iPhone. I was doing it with a 3G & the four since release.

I have been able to all kinds of Network Administrating stuff. If you need a bigger form factor then get an iPad. I for one need a phone to retain a smartphone form factor not a phonetablet form factor. Get a Droid then. I am happy with my iPhone 4.

Actually I have an iPad and an iPad 2 and if your mister I work on my phone and have been using a 3G for 4 years that takes 30 seconds just to bring up the message screen then u r stupider then I thought.... U should of upgraded a long time ago. I'm glad your so happy with a microscopic screen. But I'm not and I'm also not ever going android so y do u think I'm so pissed of when I hear people like you saying that the phone needed no redesign. Well it did and of course someone using a caveman 3G is gonna be happy with a 4s but for the people who like to keep up with the times and buy the nicest and best of electronics. Well we just got screwed. We now have to watch these droid morons laugh. While we need a telescope to see our Facebook page

Ha ha ha...

I'm pretty excited, as a user who is finally ditching Blackberry.

It's funny to hear the complainers come out of the woodwork. I suppose that's what you get when a company like Apple sets the expectations bar astronomically high for its products.

With the other manufacturers, everyone seems surprised and excited when they actually get something right. With Apple, unless the new product is half the size, five times the power, and can drive your car automatically, everyone seems disappointed.

Can't wait for my 4S - still the nicest screen out there, and heck - I still don't know what I'd even need a 14 mbps downlink connection for.

They were talking about the bottom end. Hence free 3GS and $99 iphone 4, plus adding Sprint. The A5 processor can still mix with the best of them. The only thing it doesn't have is a larger screen, which is personal preference. Tegra 3 and Exynos 4212 are the first real SoCs to one-up the A5, and they aren't out yet.

1) According to what benchmarks?
2) According to what tests? (and, for how long?)
3) According to.. wait, puh-leaze, "up to 14.4" mbps its no where near 4G speeds.
4) No i dont.
5) Yeah, thats impressive.
6) Innovating again, are we?
Come now dear, mommys gona buy you an ice cream.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to buy a 2 year old phone either. Which is why I'm buying a new iPhone 4S, which was announced earlier today - did you catch the news?

I have owned every iPhone that has come out. Every now and then I dabble in Android to check it out... see how it's going in that world... but I always come back to iPhone.

1 reason is size. I always tell people... especially with phones like Galaxy S II with 4.3 inch screens... "Man this thing is big. Kind of uncomfortable to hold. This build quality feels cheep too."

iPhone has always felt sturdy, high quality build and the PERFECT size.

Now it's coming with the features I've wanted from Android devices. 1080p camera, dual core, dictation, voice feaures. But... like in Apple elegance and style, we get the features with a super fine polish to them!

1080p video with image stabilization and better sensors. Faster camera. I have kids... it is important to be able to quickly whip out the camera and take a shot while they are doing something cute.

A voice assistant that I don't have to speak like a robot to get it to understand me and it knows what I want it to do.

And really... what is your problem??? The iPhone 4's design is still LEAPS and BOUNDS over many of the competitors. The freakin thing is made of glass! Who else does THAT?!?

Thank you Apple! I'll be sending you $399 soon for my 64GB. :apple:

Another "Ditto!"

Sprint

The big news for me was the confirmation of Sprint as a new carrier. So, the 4S is new to me. I have no problems with the screen size (same as iPod touch) but smaller than my Evo4G. I guess the bigger screen is nice, but the iPod touch screen is so much better.

The Evo4G to Evo3D wasn't that big of a bump, either. Mostly concealed behind the "3D" which is very gimmicky. I wonder how many Android fanboys dissed that upgrade?

The real loser was the iPod Touch... not even an upgrade to the A5...

If I get the 64GB 4s then, I can give my iPod touch to my wife. Sell my Evo4G and only have to carry one device instead of two. That's sweet.

I didn't find the iPad -> iPad 2 to be compelling enough for me to upgrade. Not every new version is. Perhaps iPad 3 will be.

Hopefully in 10 days, I will be rockin' an iPhone 4s.

Couple things: the next iPhone will be the 6, not the 5.

I'm actually excited for the 4S, since I'm with Sprint and never had a chance for the iPhone 4. Now I get to buy the perfected "S" version of Apple's hardware every two years.

The people saying that the dual 3G antennas means they'll reach their data caps faster have no idea what they're talking about. A 16MB download is a 16MB download, no matter how fast you reach it. I'm just glad I have the unlimited "Everything Plan" with Sprint.

Exactly what i was thinking. I've suffered with my POS Samsung Instinct for 2+ years, so this announcement of the 4s is definitely something i'm interested in. I can understand the dilemma that "4" owners may have right now, but in my particular case, this release is PERFECT for me.

My thoughts

Well sold my i4 two weeks ago, in prep for 5. As we all now know we got a 4s.

Watching the news come in, I immediately started looking at alternative phones here in the uk. Have only used iPhone since the original, and am kind of looking at other things.

Then it hit me, no phone is going to serve me aswell as a 4s. Why?

iCloud.

Been using the ios5 beta for around 6 weeks on my iPad 2, and things like photostream, iWork etc just won't be available if I go HTC or Samsung

So 4s it is....

Sure it would... if they ran windows phone (office, camera roll+skydrive). Wait for Nokia though :- )

A post so intelligent, it needs repeating...

I never asked for a redesign.. I just wanted a bigger screen. To me it's much more important than 1080p video recording, camera, 3d rendering, or the so-called assistant. I mean, when you look at any smartphone 90% of it is the display, and 3.5" is outdated right now.. imagine in a year!

1080p -> my galaxy s2 does that already, but I use 720p instead. On most phones you get a cropped image when in 1080p and I bet it's no different in iphone 4s. It also produces huge files.

3d rendering -> looks nice and all, but I'm not really into games.. And people who are into games would probably love a bigger screen!

assistant -> not sure about that.. I mean, it could be useful while you're driving but that's about it. Not available in my language anyway..

My iphone 4 died on me and I replaced it with a SGS2.. I do like iOS better than android, but going from a galaxy s2 to a phone that looks exactly like my old phone? I don't think so.

But then again, that's just me.

Okay, so all you haters and whiners,
You don't appreciate the A5 chip which, as proven, mashes up all the competitors' CPUs,
You don't appreciate the new camera, which is as good as the best Android phones,
You don't appreciate the new clever antenna system which makes 4G speeds, without 4G,
You don't appreciate the new awesome Siri voice assistant,
You don't appreciate the extended battery life,
You don't appreciate the fact that it is a world phone.

1. The A5 chip has been around for 6 months and took no effort on apple's part to put it in the iphone.

2. Apple didn't design the new camera, they just bought it from another company.

3. The new antenna system doesn't even give true 4g speeds but 2/3 of it.

4. Apple didn't develop the Siri technology, they just threw down a couple hundred million and gave it a new UI.

5. Extended battery life is a given with all new apple products.

6. The only reason why apple made it a world phone is so they can dominate the other 95% of the market that they don't control.

I appreciate apple as a company but what I do not appreciate is laziness and complacency. Apple is one of the most valuable companies in the world and after 16 months this is all they have to offer? What else were they doing with all that time?

I was either going to:

1) Give my iP4 to the (new) old lady and get a new iPhone, or

2) Give my iP4 to the (new) old lady, buy an iPod Touch and tether it w/ one of the new Mango devices.

The only thing interesting about the iP4S is that I could get it in white (purportedly), so option #2 is looking pretty compelling... especially if Nokia delivers on some sexy new Windows Phone 7 hardware later this month.

Of course what I "SHOULD" do is bank the cash and just keep on using my iP4 until next year.
