Guess the Mighty Mouse is mighty popular: I just got an email from Apple saying

"Due to an unexpected delay, we are unable to ship the following item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:

MA086LL/A, MIGHTY MOUSE STAND ALONE KIT-USA

will now ship on or before 08/09/2005"

And I ordered it around noon central time! Oh well.

Yep, it's definitely popular. I haven't received that e-mail yet, but I probably will. Oh, well. As long as I get it, I'm happy. I'm excited! :)

With the current delivery status do you reckon they will be in stock in the apple stores in the us from the 16th. Or am I better buying one online in the U.K. as I cannot be bothered going up to regent street.

You roll your eyes, but nobody in this thread has yet to take up my offer and provide information about why this touch sensitive stuff is superior to traditional multi-button mice. I'm not just being sarcastic either, if there are benefits to using this method rather than simply having a second button I would honestly like to know and I am open to changing my opinion. Right now I don't see the benefit and think that it simply complicates the design and causes some drawbacks.

Actually I was agreeing with you about the mighty mouse. I was rolling my eyes because I mentioned the video iPod which is kind of off-topic.
As I had said in another post, the design of the mouse clearly came from the the idea of contradicting a "two-button" mouse design. The mouse works like a multi button mouse, while only having one button, so... Apple can get away with saying that they still use a one-button mouse on Macs. I was wondering what excuse they'll come up with when the iPod finally gets video which Jobs said is impractical on such a small screen. They'll have to come up with a design and marketing gimmick such as this one to avoid looking like they contradicted Jobs.

If the mouse is included in Macs from now on, I think there's nothing wrong with the design and nobody should complain as it probably behaves pretty much like the standard Apple pro mouse and finally has a way to right click which is the thing that everybody (including me) have always complained about.

If some of you don't like this new mouse, there is a big chance that you didn't like design of the single button mouse, so you loose or gain nothing. What is the problem? You still have your Logitech, Microsoft etc. mice.

Exactly. People don't hesitate to complain about the mouse, when the truth is there's nothing much to be excited about if you never liked the original pro mouse in th first place. Just pretend Apple didn't realease this. :p

Very impressive! I never thought I'd see Apple release a 2-button mouse, but today is the day! The thing looks sweet too, well done on Apple's design team.
Let's not get too excited. Apparently, there are several ergonomic issues that have risen. Two include depressing of the scroll button makes scrolling nearly impossible and the side buttons make using the mouse more cumbersome than it needs to be.

The point of this technology, as was asked above, is that it lets the user choose whether they want a one-button mouse or a two-button mouse.

Apple has the option of shipping this mouse standard with all their Macs, and under the default settings it will operate as a one-button mouse with a scroll feature. Many users won't even be aware that they can set the mouse to have a right-click, while users who look for this feature will find it easily.

Of course, you could do the same thing with a traditional two-button mouse. You could just have both buttons activate a left-click by default. But in terms of the user's experience this would be completely different. New users would instantly be anxious about which button they needed to press and would avoid pressing down both buttons at once, and they would become confused when they discovered that both buttons had the same effect. And the mechanical action of depressing the whole of the mouse as one piece (which I personally am quite fond of) would be lost.

This design makes it practical to use this mouse as a one-button mouse, which is very important for Apple's design philosophy. It also makes this a universal mouse that Apple can ship with all their Macs. I expect that they will, sooner or later.

Yes, remember this is a complaint thread. If you don't have something to complain about then don't bother posting.

Hmm... just as I'm getting ready to purchase a BT Apple mouse, this comes out. So, I guess it's time to hold on that purchase AND wait for the next revision of this one.

Let's make a new rule: No bitching about a product unless you've actually bought it and used it.

All the years people have been screaming for a 2-button Apple mouse, and now that it's finally here, it's just one big bitchfest.

Be happy people. It's only a mouse. Okay, a Mighty Mouse.

I could not agree more!! Good Job Apple, Good Comment MontyZ

Amen, MontyZ.

Not sure why everyone is complaining about it being wired...I have an Apple BT mouse and I never use it because I got sick of replacing the batteries every 3-6 weeks.

I love this mouse, though, and the name. Too bad I just bought a MacMice 3-button job....

Thats why i like my MX1000. Excellent battery life and rechargable. Plus it has a nice battery meter so you know when you need to recharge it.

I have the Mighty Mouse and i really like it and it works.
I prefer to have this over a single button mouse since this is just like the single mouse button with added function that does not hinder the purity of the single button mouse. Very minor adjustment is needed from single to this mouse since the features almost transparent. When you close your eye the only clue that tells you that this is a Mighty Mouse only by the ball and of course, the embossed logo and the seamless shell design which are both good.

I hear some people mentioning about the scroll ball going down low but that was done on purpose.

It ball lowers to create a flat surface area similar to the powerbook touch pad. The slight friction that you feel on the top of the mouse gives you a larger sensory feedback on your finger tip to tell you which way your finger is moving otherwiser it will be like using the round mouse that shipped with the early iMacs.

Believe me, apple engineers and designers used all sizes balls to experinment which give the user the greatest feedback and usability. That is what Apple is about. Good design not all looks. Mouse need to function over looks. That is why they kept the lower profile which gives the least amount of fatigue and control for most people.

This is their first trial into the mouse that is multifunctional. They may comeup with another ground breaking modification for the second generation Mighty Mouse similar to the jog and click feature they discovered on the ipod which is award winning.

For $50 bucks, you can't lose. If you don't like it, try somthing that work. At least Apple is giving us choices.

A comment on the BT mouse. I tried this and the batteries make this mouse heavier which causes fatigue after using it all day. I'm on the computer using a mouse over 9 hours a day, honestly, and I went back to the apple coreded mouse. Also for precise control, corded mouse has a slightly a little more finer feel/control. I do not want people using the mouse for games and internet to tell me it's fine. Try doing serious fine pixle control work all day and you want the lightest and the most ergonomic. Cheers.

This is just great!

Can't wait for the first Intel Mac to arrive. A genuine Macintosh powered by x86, running Windows Vista and of course the Official Apple mulitbutton mouse will make my Macintosh experience unparalleled!

For all of those who are still wondering, it still really clicks. Just like the pro mouse. Pushes down and everything. The sensors under the hood just tell it which finger is doing the pushing so that it knows whether to left or right click. The scroll ball also works amazingly well, givving the user a lot of tactile feedback when scrolling. BT or not, it's an incredible job done by the Apple engineers to keep, yet not keep, the one-button design.

C out.

Initially I couldn't figure out if the mouse actually clicked (tactile feedback), and I've read 16 pages on this thread.
Now that its been established that the mighty mouse works like the pro mouse, what the purpose of the speakers?

Why would you need artificial 'clicks' along with a real one?

Well, I will be using one tomorrow after it is delivered. I will post up my review on it.

I am currently using an MX 900 bluetooth mouse with all the buttons. I am eager to feel the ergonomics of this new mouse as it is still a hassle some times pressing the buttons on the MX.

It will be interesting to see how it works in Call Of Duty - United Offensive as well.
