NO Upgrade prices for 720p owners!

are you serious? Did you get an upgrade price for you macbook pro, your ipad, your ipod? It's $99 dollars. Use the other Apple TV for your bedroom or a paper weight

edit: Maybe you were talking about your actual movie downloads, if so than the uploads appear to be free.

It has a "Single core A5"...
I bet they are using the reject A5 dual-core chips that don't have a functioning second core. They may have planned this from the very beginnings of the A5 and thus they could have a good number of the single-core-limited chips already sitting in a warehouse waiting for just such a product.

It would seem very strange for them to redesign the existing dual-core A5 just for the Apple TV, I'm sure it is the same chip, just with only one functioning core (the other being defective or intentionally disabled).

And Roku has HuluPlus. That is 100% of the reason why I don't buy an AppleTV over a Roku. I know that Apple can offer it because it is already on iPhone and iPad. They are just trying to milk us for evey $1.99 per episode that they can get.

You're assuming it's an intentional limitation by Apple, but it could be something that Hulu insists on for whatever reason. Don't forget, the iOS Hulu app has no Airplay or wired output to TV either so it sure looks like they want to limit it to mobile devices.

Roku supports a lot of things but in some of those cases it looks like they're hacking around things.

I'm talking about downloading previous purchases on your Mac. And some people didn't believe that it would be free to upgrade your existing content to 1080p.

Yep, redownloading UP in 1080p right now :D
Wow, but the question is can you download movies bought in SD as HD? I'm thinking not, sadly. Can you give it a shot?

It would be so awesome if you could, but Apple charges more for HD. So I don't think we'll see it happen.

Download Previous Movie Purchases: US ONLY

I can confirm that downloading previously purchased movies only works in the US.

Apple.com (US):
Individually download past purchases.
When you buy a song, movie, TV show, app, or book from the App Store or the iTunes Store, iCloud stores it in your purchase history. So you can download what you want, from any of your devices, to whichever devices you choose.2 For example, if you don’t want your iPad to automatically download everything you buy on your iPhone, you can choose just the things you do want to download — song by song, movie by movie, app by app, and book by book.

Apple.ca (Canada):

Well I've never purchased an SD movie or TV show from the iTunes that was available in HD (I've always purchased HD), but I have a load of SD content from all my past digital copies from blu-ray purchases. Apple allows you to download those from the cloud too, but heres the great thing:

No, you do not get automatic access to the HD version (darn), but if the movie has any upgraded bells and whistles, like Extras, Dolby Digital 5.1, Closed captioning, you get all that free.

Just tried with my Star Trek digital copy. It was just a bare bones SD movie file. Trashed it, and proceeded to download from iCloud. It's now downloading the movie along with the "Extras" from iTunes. Pretty awesome deal if you ask me. This also bypasses the user from having to deal with the studios in case your digital copy gets lost or accidentally deleted. :)

Yes, I was talking about movie downloads to your Mac. If you previously purchased a movie in HD, you can redownload it now from iCloud in 1080p. Just make sure to configure for 1080p downloads in the iTunes Store preferences.

Really??

Hmmm

250ish for PS3
100ish for 1TB HD ... Unless the prices have dropped back to the proper levels.
300 or more for a used Mac capable of running windows virtually

SO!

A $650 investment outdoes a $99 box.. Shocking!

Yeah, but you can do MORE with that PS3 than with an ATV. If you already have a PS3, which many do, it is already an ATV+ (sans Apple programming and iTunes store).

Besides, it is $230 for a PS3. Free software to run on any fairly modern Mac.

So $230 for a game system which is a complete media system or a $99 PITA (you have to convert all video which isn't compatible while PMS converts and streams almost all video files, plays internet radio feeds, plays internet video feeds, etc).

If you have a PS3: $0 for a better media experience. PS3> ATV.

Get it right.

Ah too bad, because all my movies are in SD. I hope they offer an upgrade option for the difference in price. I.E, upgrade to HD for $5.

That aside, are you saying I can rip a Star Trek movie that I own and then import into iTunes and download their version of it? o_O

So the Apple TV is still just a "hobby" I guess? Considering this very tiny update, it's basically 1080P support with the single-core A5 chip and that's it?

The fact that Apple TV2 owners (like myself) still get the new updates is good and all, but why didn't they even bother to make more out of the Apple TV than this?

So it's still streaming only as there is no hard drive, and there is still no way to get an Apple TimeCapsule to act as a iTunes server so I'll still need to have at least one of my other computers on each and every time I'd want to use the Apple TV for music? Or will it at least utilise iTunes Match and iCloud to stream from the web? Never mind though as iTunes Match is nowhere near being available in Norway...

I see so much great potential in the Apple TV product line, but Apple just fails to deliver in every single aspect in my book. Why do I want the Apple TV instead of an Mac Mini under my television. Because it's cheaper, it drains less power, it's small, sleeker and everything you'd normally want from such a device. But when you'll need to have at least one of your machines running in order to get iTunes going it defeats the whole purpose.

I have no problem living with the limited support of codecs, I would start renting stuff from iTunes instead of grabbing them from everywhere else. But when I can't do this without relaying on other machines and not even my Apple TimeCapsule it simply won't do. I'll keep my Mac Mini and live with the fact that I still have to run a full OS X system with XBMC, a Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless TrackPad to get what the Apple TV should have been capable of doing all this time.

Apps for the Apple TV should have been done a long time ago as well, why wouldn't Apple allow for the Apple TV to evolve into something more? They would make the Apple TV a much more capable device, it would cater to a much wider audience and if it would just get 10% of the regular iOS developer interested it would beat the crap out of any other streaming devices currently out there.

Perhaps they are keeping all this for the Apple Television?

Yea, thats the only thing Apple needs to implement: an upgrade program!

As far as my SD copies go, they were all legal "digital copies" from blu-ray purchases, so they had to access to iTunes the very first time I downloaded them, so I don't think ripping a copy would yield the same results.

While the Mac OS' look becomes progressively monochrome, Apple TV finally receives shiny new colored icons.

Oh right, I see. Thanks for the info mate! I'm looking forward to these coming to Australia soon, it's usually a little delay like with Music and TV shows, but they're here now, so movies should be too soon!

No problem :) Yea, it'll be nice to see this roll out over the rest of the world quickly.

Ok....so now I think its hung on the Step 1 of 2 ......it clearly says do not unplug your apple tv while updating....so what do I do next? Any ideas?

Update available now

If you have an AppleTV 2, you can now download the new AppleTV UI. Mine is downloading quickly. A minute left to go.

I'm a bit lost with your post... The Airport express hasn't needed an update. It's their entry level router, and it already supports N Wifi. (It's not like Time Capsule where it's running a lot of software and sync services inside) It also supports audio cables, which the Apple tv does not. So why would you buy an Apple TV to stream music to speakers? That makes no sense. Do you have speakers with optical jacks or hdmi ports??? The Apple TV would not be a good device for streaming audio.

The Airport express also allows you to use iTunes to select which speakers to send the signal too. The Apple TV also doesn't do this. It's just not that kind of device. It's TV... not audio.

actually, its quite amazing as an audio device, IMO, if your TV is set up with surround sound and a receiver, especially if your computer is no where near your stero (my computer is upstairs, my stero downstairs... With airplay, and sharing, I can basically play anything from my itunes library directly through the reciever using apple TV, as opposed to plugging in my ipad, iphone, ipod, etc.. as long as itunes is open. hdmi from the appletv right into the reciever, reciever into the TV.

its actually the feature we use most in our home.
