German website says the charger is compatible with quite a few iPhones. Is that correct? The text above only mentions the iPhone 12 and 12 Pros in the overview.
It's compatible with all previous iPhones that have the hardware for Qi wireless charging (so from the 8 to the 11/SE2) but you'll need a MagSafe case as there's no built-in mag array like the 12.

...
Lastly, the basic MagSafe Charger is priced at $39.00. Apple also announced the MagSafe Duo Charger today, which has space for the iPhone 12 and Apple Watch, but it's not yet up on Apple.com.
...

Why do you guys keep insisting that MagSafe is ONLY for the iPhone 12s and higher, when Apples own site states that it IS compatible with all these models?

FROM apple.com

What exactly were you expecting for the MagSafe elements? Transparent aluminium?

Well they could have covered up that part e.g. with a different color in that area, or something bigger that hides the whole spot. I also think it is super ugly. What are they paying their designers for? I guess one could use it together with the wallet to hide it.

What a fantastic way to de-magnetize your credit/debit cards.
Yep, it sure is a shame that Apple didn’t think to ask you, and they put in magnets without considering the possibilities for demagnetizing cards.

Or maybe, just maybe, the engineers at Apple are not the complete morons you assume them to be, and considered that, and built in the proper tolerances. The armchair quarterbacking around here is astounding. If you think the engineers are complete morons, why do you buy phones from them?

I don't get it. It's much easier to just lay the iPhone on some random wireless charger, than sticking a magnet to it... perhaps in the car it makes sense but otherwise I don't see the point.

That’s pretty much how I see it too unless we’re missing something.

I agree it's looks off (better if you opt for the white 12 or silver 12 Pro/Max) but again, not sure what you expect in a clear case, other than it will very likely yellow in a few months of use.

I wonder how many cards the MagSafe Wallet can hold? Or did I miss that part in the story? The only way I'd want one of those would be if it could hold my driver's license, one ATM/debit card, one credit card, and at least a little cash. But then again, that would probably make the whole thing too thick for my iPhone. Guess I'm going to have to go with one of the silicone cases.

Of course, in the future, it sure would be nice if they could digitize your driver's license and if all retailers and restaurants would accept Apple Pay. Then there'd be no need for an external MagSafe Wallet! That's the future I'm looking for...when I can finally throw away my wallet, my keychain, and my key fob for my car. The only thing I want in my pocket is my iPhone!!
I'm sure a third party will make a really nice magnetic money clip/wallet that will fit 3-5 cards plus cash. I personally need 5+ cards everywhere I go, so maybe that does it. Would be nice...

That's a great question. I'd love to get a clear case for once (vs having to get a colored case to hide the magnet sandwiched between the phone and case)
Hasn't anyone got a screengrab of that Belkin wireless MagSafe car mount they briefly showed? Bizarrely was seen in white, whereas 99.5% of car interiors are predominantly black or dark grey.

Any idea if iPhone 12 will also work with regular (non-Magsafe) Qi chargers? I'm assuming MagSafe won't work though Otterbox cases, and I'm fine with that as long as I can still use normal wireless chargers.

Apple just has to release a leather case. They just gotta....
One would think so, it's all I've ever used on my iPhones and seems like a no-brainer. Unfortunately I'm not holding my breath. I remember when the iPad Pro first got rid of the rounded edges I felt just as certain that Apple just HAD to make a leather folio case for it...they never made one. They don't have one for the pending iPad Air 4 either...

I just watched the announcement video and I could have sworn they mentioned leather cases as well as phone sleeves, whereby you could still see the time with the phone in the sleeve.

Magnetic strip for swipe payments has been pretty much obsolete in Europe for over a decade.
Yep, and anybody taking a swipe in the US will lose in a chargeback situation

I don't understand why people want to put their credit cards with their phone. Then if you lose one you lose both. I don't even keep my cash in my wallet.
I would probably put one card in there as well as a drivers license, and maybe a folded up 20 or two

Will the mag safe charger work with a normal ultra thin case like other chargers do, or does it have to have a mag carge case to work at all?

I didn't get to see much of the event or read the press release, but it looks like the leather case was mentioned in both according to other posters. They have had covers for the iPad Air 4 in the store but not available for weeks now, not sure why the leather cases that will be available along with Pro Max orders wouldn't also be listed. Heck, we don't even know when the Air 4 and accessories are going to be available but they re there.

Oh well, it's been an interesting year for all kinds of product releases, silly to think Apple would be immune to the wrath of 2020. ;)
