MAc Pro updates suck :(

No thunderbolt, just updated CPU's

They'd have to improve to suck. No Thunderbolt, no USB 3, same old video cards that weren't setting the world on fire 2 years ago?

Is this a cruel joke? Guess I'll be looking at Windows machines at SIGGRAPH.

I wish they would spin off the workstation division to someone who cares about people that work for a living.

Apparently the new Apple demographic is people who can't tell if it's raining when they're looking at rain, have severe short-term memory loss, yet still try to cook, or have no friends and try to have meaningful conversations with their their phones.

storage on the new Retina Macbook Pro

Something I haven't figured out yet. Is there some way of adding storage to the MacBook pro? They talked about up to 768 gigs of storage, but last I checked, there's no such thing as a 768 gig flash memory chip. How does it get installed?

Also, as I understand it, even Macbook Air flash memory is user replaceable (warranty or not). Macsales sells the modules (a long strip basically, I think), anyone think that's the case here?

While I didn't find it hilarious, I also was puzzled at the copious down votes for what I saw as an essentially humorous pro apple post!

However I notice that you also got big time downvoting for merely for wondering why it was down voted.

curiouser and curiouser

can you imagine if facebook implemented a dont like button  the suicide rate would rise sharply

Now you'll get down voted for wondering why the person who wondered why the OP got down voted got down voted.

The decision to make is whether you want a retina display at the cost of a proprietary device and only serviceable and upgradable at the Apple price. I expect there is a market for this but in my opinion, the Retina display is not worth the unserviceable, non-upgradeable components.

Apple didn't mention the Mac Pro because it is simply a bump that is overdue. I suspect the Mac Pro and 17" Macbook Pro is on its way out. Apple is no longer interested in the professional markets.

The retina MB Pro IS your Mac Pro. Is it missing something you wanted, other than a tower shape?

Let me guess: you are not a professionoal

How about a second and third graphics card for driving mutiple computer displays and color grading monitors for editing films? How about two bays for burning master DVDs and Blue-Rays for replication? How about multiple bays for terra-bytes of storage? How about an Eithernet port for ultra-fast internet? How about a second Eithernet port for connectivity to other outboard gear (film color grading hardware, for example or digital mixers for audio)? There are many situations where a laptop with its limited connectivity simply doesn't work in a pro environment.

Very lovely laptop I might say. Looking forward to the display.

I have just one thing to say

APPLE REALLY FUDGED* EVERYONE WITH NON-UPGRADABLE RAM

I mean, I have no issue paying two grand for a good notebook, but paying 200$ for 8gb of ram? Welcome to 2005. If you are able to justify this, you must either be the most fanatic Apple praising testicle there is, or just plain mentally retarded.

*that other 6 letter f-word

edit: on that note, I find the 600$ premium for the retina display and the 512gb SSD totally justifiable and good value for money.

You don't think it sucks balls that a 2.5" SSD drive wasnt implemented?

Not that its surprising, really.... apple doesnt give a crap about standards... unless theyre their own.... like that wonderfully executed thunderbolt port with sooooooooo many peripherals available....

Why have you been down voted for this? I found this hilarious :D

I'm not sure. It was way more entertaining and imaginative than the overused futurama image.

Not my cup of tea just yet. Everything is soldered in which means paying Apple's premium for any BTO £2000+.

Also majority of apps won't be compatible for a while...and its a Rev A product. Will wait for design to be tweaked of any quirks and more compatible apps to be available and maybe even a price drop.

It depends what you are after. You're likely to see a better cpu update next year, although I wouldn't expect it too much earlier in the year. I'm not sure of Intel's current schedule for Haswell. The ram upgrade cost isn't too terrible.

so RAM whatever you select when you purchase your configuration, you are stuck with? that means i have to pay there ridiculous +$200 to go from 8gb to 16gb and cannot put in another stick myself?

any help? wanna make sure i understand this right

Typically it would be two sticks either way. They put in 2x4 as opposed to 2x8. It's never 1x8. If you buy just the ram from another vendor with a 2011 model, you're looking at roughly $150. If you're spending $2200+ on a laptop, and you want this today, it's not that bad. Maybe later it'll be $100. If it's that big of a deal, you're probably already spending too much. Apple has been able to do pretty much whatever they want by controlling things from an OS level, although these updates are making me consider if I really want to continue buying things from Apple.

So I'm at the Apple Checkout page, and with student discount it comes to $1999 and says that you get a $100 gift card and it won't charge you for it....but it's showing up in the cart bringing the total to $2099. Anyone else having this problem?????

Having this same exact problem, no matter which Macbook I try to put in my cart. Initially it shows a $100 credit down at the bottom, but once I plug in my shipping zip code the credit disappears, an error message appears at the top, and it won't let me make the purchase. I tried this on IE, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari and on two different computers. The error message says to contact the 800 number, so I've been sitting here on the phone for the last half hour waiting to get through.

Apple has its head up its a$$. To give creative professionals the same 3 year old 5770 video card, lack of USB 3.0 and TB (which apple touts as so extraordinary) is a slap to the face.

Apple clearly doesnt give a damn about creatives, they seem to only care about noobs sending pictures of grandma and grandpa with their toy iPads.

I did a tripled take when I saw the same GPU as well. Pretty obvious this year is it last go around. Oh well I saved a bunch of money on my computer tower by building my own.

Thats also because thats the way a lot of people are. Yet, today... tim cook said Apple is changing the world. Sounds as arrogant and ignorant as Steve Jobs.

can you imagine if facebook implemented a dont like button  the suicide rate would rise sharply

mmm I think you're onto something here. Instead of crashing planes into buildings Al Qaeda could simply slip some malicous code into face book.

I know I am going to be slapped down for this. It is a nice laptop, the problem is the days of my payin anything close to $2,000 for a laptop are decidedly over. Will be sticking with my current or one generation behind now 13 inch MacBook pro with external monitor.

I wish they would make a 13" Retina for $1700-$1800.. I would be all over that.

I've been holding off for two years hoping for a redesign and completely new MBP lineup. But really, the only new thing they gave us today was a new 15" MBP/Air with Retina. Everything else just got a speed bump.

Overall, i think this WWDC was a fail in terms of what was expected. No new iMacs or Mac Pros, just one stinkin 15" Retina MBP after 4 years of the unibody design and just basic gradual speed bumps.

Is everyone forgetting that you also get a ton of nice new features software vise on the MBP?
I mean the new MBP maxed out, with Mountain Lion, external storage, Final Cut X will be the new pro setup for editing. Others WILL follow. And as things went on at the keynote I got the distinct feeling that this is just the begining. I see touchscreen based apps on iMacs and transformation of MBP to a slate in the near future. But I guess the company needs to pace itself. These are exciting times indeed.

for those of you starting to worry about the Mac Pro - the conference isn't one day so relax :)

It did get a "silent" update and probably its worst ever. For those worried about the MP...those worries have been confirmed.

nice or?

I really think the new macbook pro is cool, nice slimmer design and the retina screen

but what really bothers me is, why is the scales resolution not able to do 1440x900?
and why no 802.11ac wifi?

if the pro had these 2 features.. i'd buy the new "insanely pricy" pro first thing tomorrow

Gotta love the informed posters. Like wikus, who thinks that *INTEL's* Thunderbolt port is Apple's...

(Seriously, everyone has talked about it being Intel's tech since back when it was code-named 'Light Peak', why is it that some people still insist that it's Apple's design?)

Same, I don't see myself parting from my Mid 2011 MacBook Pro hooked up to a vastly superior Dell U2410 IPS Monitor. Don't care for that Retina display or the marketing behind it, its a gimmick word that means nothing. Apparently Retina now means 220ppi.

Apple's gone ahead ahead and made customization a pain in the ass. I hate this.

Dont't care too much for the SSD. I would have taken the 256GB. I have 1gbit fiber at home and at work (at all international offices I go to) and have a 5tb file server in a datacenter. It's a laptop for me, not a storage device. Heck, my Macbook Air with 128gb suffices for me.

Really bothered about that ram though. I cringed when I had to shell out 100$ to upgrade this MBA I work on, it didn't hurt me financially, it hurt me psychologically.

I'm also getting the student discount errors. it added a £70 discount to my cart but is trying to charge me for it

There may be some items in your cart that qualify for a discount. Please refresh this page in your browser. If the issue persists, please try again later or call the Apple Store at 0800 048 0408.

I'm going to wait until this is fixed because i want the cred:cool:

The lack of upgradability worries me i must say..

SSD by default? Good move. Very few people need >256GB of space on their laptop, and it really boosts the performance.
