Not Worthy of Note

Must have a 17 inch.

Apple wasting their breath until they produce one in 17 inch.

Another disconcerting thing is the Retina screen is only equivalent to 1440x900 and not the 1680x1050 that i'm used to (Hi-Res AG screen). Yes things will be sharper/crisper but there'll also be less room overall compared to what i'm coming from.

That's a really good point, I didn't consider that.

Less room? Wtf.

Its a 15.4 inch screen.

You can get 2x 1440x900 webpages on the screen at the same time!!!! You can scale text to anything you like pretty much!

You don't understand. EVERYTHING on the screen is larger when the screen resolution is lower (or equivalently lower at a 4x pixel doubling). So sure, you can scale text, but the menu bar will be larger on the screen, all the images will be larger on the screen, all the tool pallets will be larger on the screen, all the buttons will be larger on the screen, etc., and all of that means you have a smaller amount of inches of actual workspace and a smaller amount of objects you can fit on the screen at one time.

No Firewire - wouldn't be too bad if there was something else .

But Thunderbolt hasn't quite arrived yet, never mind some adapters which might or might not show up , and work, and be affordable.

So - there is no connectivity to the majority of external pro devices with the new MBP .

Just be a man, Aplle, call it MacBook something, drop the pro moniker, and tell us pros to toss off .

This is what I'm struggling with. This is basically a deal-breaker for me.

No it doesn't. You can use CMD -/+ and shrink stuff as much as you like. Also there are settings in OSX which removes all of the menu bars.

So when you buy new Mac they give you the OS and recovery on USB? Same for iLife and iWorks?

Yes.

I believe there is Firewire . I don't know any PC or device not made by apple that uses Thunderbolt . This Thunderbolt seems to be apple thing .

Yes.

So why is PC not doing this ?

This is the new Mac Pro

I was going to buy either a new iMac or a new Mac Pro as my work station but neither was announced. This beat them out.

Now let's see a retina Thunderbolt Display please.

No, you can create a recovery on your own stick. But there's no need to - you can always recover or reinstall the OS via internet. A stick is just quicker, that's all.

iLife and iWorks can be updated/re-downloaded through the App store.

Keep in mind the MBA and Mac Mini also ship without an optical drive and have for some time. They have all the kinks worked out.

MATTE SCREEN??

Jesus, so many people are omitting that awful MIRROR finish on the new 'retina' display macbook. Sure, I'll take an IPS screen with a high resolution... and they lets make it completely useless by turning it into a MIRROR with that idiotic super gloss finish.
Agreed. Every MBP I have owned has been matte - I could NEVER use a glassy display, ever. I am hoping that by the time my 1 year old MBP needs to be replaced that there is a 17" matte option once again .

But when I was at apple store they still have iLife and iWorks if you want to buy it ?

And how do you install the OS or do a recovery when the OS is mess up you cannot boot into OS thus no internet.

Searched through the apple website and couldn't find a clear answer. Does anyone have a guess??

Retina display is cool and all, but what about the 'display' resolution?? And i'm talking about desktop real estate. Obviously, 2880 x 1800 will not be displayed natively on a 15" (if you get what i mean). Will it be stuck to the equivelent real of a 1440 x 900 (72dpi)??? i hope not.

Last year, I was planning to buy the 17" macbook pro because of the 1920x1200 real estate.

Can someone please clear up? thanks.

Yes.

At this point I'm starting to wonder if you're a troll, or if you're really this uninformed.

Here is a picture of my screen at its native resolution, and another of my screen at a lower resolution. In both cases these are what I see filling up the entire 15 inches of my display. At the lower resolution everything is MUCH bigger in a way that can't be changed, and it makes it so that there is MUCH less usable area. Until Apple adds resolution independence into OS X, this will always be true. It's just basic arithmetic.

I couldn't give a flying toss what they did with the MacBook Pro, woopee a flashy screen and it's thinner oh that really helps me in my work!!! oh but I can ask Siri to message my wife , oh for the love of god..
Where is the new Mac Pro for the Pro users that have supported you all these years, we get a bumped up machine with a 2 year old graphics card, who in their right mind is going to buy that!!! WTF Apple your as bad as Samsung now ...as soon as Steve has gone you turn into a money grabbing corp that can't give a crap about it's consumers..

you realise that not even PC Mobos have TB ports until last few weeks?

Its very new on the larger mobo makers. USB has only just became native support.

There are also Thunderbolt PCI-e adapters u can buy for PC's maybe work on osx

Video editors use FireWire, which can be adapted to ThunderBolt.
