It took me about an hour. When ever I pressed a button (like "Continue") I opened a new tab (by holding the command key) just in case an error happened, so I wouldn't have to start over. I just returned to my existing order tab and continued again. But when it came to actually paying (a new tab wouldn't open), it never failed, it did take a while, but never rejected my request and never asked me to start over.

It was much better than the experience I had with the iPhone 4S. I had to get up at 3AM, and it failed many times before going through around 7 AM. They even (eventually) put my order on reserve (about 2 hours after the servers couldn't handle the traffic) and asked me to come back later. So at least I didn't have to finish the order first thing and keep my place in line.

That's great you got your iPad order too. I had the opposite with my 4S, got it on my first try. But as I said it was tough today for "New iPad" but I got my order done.:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

"new" ipad

Got my confirmation email at 2:48 CST...I've been at work and haven't been able to post about it yet. Some how right before I had to work at 3 I got through! I am pumped about the new ipad. I probably wouldn't have bought one, however, last week I sold my 2 on craigslist for 450 (ipad 2 16gb wifi) hehe:cool:...can't wait until next friday! :D

Tbh you dont need full Siri in a tablet.

Your smartphone is your life, it goes with you at all times. A tablet, is not.

People love it when you tell them that what's true for you must be true for them. I don't even own a smartphone, it certainly isn't my life. And when I do get one, it still won't be "my life." I don't know what planet you live on, but my life tends to be.. you know. Me. Go back to whatever slop you came from, kay?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.7; en-us; SGH-T959V Build/GINGERBREAD) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

OK what a joke of an update. After the 4s how could anyone expect more. So this is being marked as retina at 264 ppi. Oh wait that's at 15 inches away.

Please, before you out yourself as a complete and utter moron, try getting a clue. 264 ppi means 264 pixels per inch. That's the same whether you're 15 inches away from the iPad, 15 lightyears away from the iPad, or have never seen one.

Gotta love Apple and their marketing words. But of course they tailor their marketing to the level of intelligence of their customers. So you can't really fault them.

Again, this is a bit funny given the completely clueless nature of your post. Get a grip,

I don't know if anyone already answered this since I haven't gone through the entire 15 pages yet, but I suspect it is due to the iPad. The Apple TV 3 can obviously handle Airplayed video streams of 1080p, so the limiting factor must be that the iPad can't function and encode at the same time in anything over 720p. I'd expect the Macs with Mountain Lion to be able to Airplay 1080p content.

That's a very good point. The iPad can clearly encode 1080p video in realtime (because the Camera App does it!), but that's the only thing it's doing at the time you're recording video. If you're playing a intense game, asking the iPad to mirror the screen at the same time may mean encoding it to 720p as well.

Normally true mirroring is to the same pixel ratio so there is no scaling involved, but still scaling isn't very hard compared to encoding. But, yes, there has to be encoding, because it's not an HDMI connection (or any uncompressed connection), it has to be compressed down to Wifi speeds. HDMI carries up to 10 Gbps (uncompressed video), which is far more than the (usually) less than 50 Mbps for any video.

That logic makes perfect sense, however, would it have been that much more processing overall to encode to 2MP (1080p) instead of 1MP (720p)? It's not twice the work (usually), just twice the pixels. Couldn't there a hardware H.264 encoder in the iPad to do the task, much like a separate I/O chip does to take the burden off the CPU? Or is this encoder all part of the Quad-Core graphics run by software?

I'm not tech-savy so someone please help me out.

Is this new upgrade good? Why are people saying it's bad?

This iPad has A5X chip. What did it have before and what is it? And what is LTE? And last question (I promise!) it has a 5MP rear camera... What did it have before?

to be honest im kinda disspointed on the name lol.. wth is "the new ipad" why not ipad 3g or ipad 3

When I preordered mine today, it said iPad (third generation). Just like the Touch. Makes a lot of sense to me.

sounds like you don't need an iPad since you can't even use Google...

The landscape screen res is 2048x1536. What would the portrait mode screen res be?

1536 x 2048? Just a hunch.

Someone may have mentioned it - but why still 64G. As nice as the retina display is its not a reason for me to upgrade after a year. I will not use the iPad to shoot photos either. But more gigs would have been nice.

I used to think gigs were important. I upgraded my laptop to have > 1 tb and have an iPad 32gb. But with iCloud now, I think the large gig hdd days are over. I doubt my next laptop will need more than 128 and I've just ordered the new 16gb iPad.

For me music and movies always took up the bulk of the space on my gadgets. iTunes Match and Pandora solved it on the Music front, and if we are lucky, there will be an addition to iTunes Match to include videos of various sorts. In any event, there is good software to let you stream your video library from your desktop. Sure, you need a decent internet connection, but rather than pay 100$+ for more gigs, update your internet and iCloud storage! It'll do you much more good.

I guess the surprise is they pulled it off... let's see how many they can make, demand is going to be off the charts, they had to make an iPad every 3 seconds, with this one they'll have to make more... way more.

I am going to buy one for sure... if there's one thing that was crap about the iPad 2 it was the camera - hard to believe Apple would put such a POS hardware on their tablet, whatever their reasoning (I guess it was... this is only for FaceTime, nobody's going to use this as a camera... but whatever, no excuse for making the camera worse than an iPhone 1 from 2007...).

So this fixes that and comes with a great camera. And retina displays - they sound great but I am pretty sure they'll look even better. Screen shots don't do them justice, I think this will have a much greater impact than the one on the iPhone 4/4S - we're well on the way to a future with only retina displays in everything, phones, tablets, laptops, desktops - anything that's not retina will simply look *BAD* next to those displays. It will be obvious. There will be no going back.

So Windows and Android better support this ASAP or they'll just be left behind. I don't think they will get there by just adding more pixels to the screen - retina requires OS level pixel doubling and AFAIK only iOS does this at the moment. Honestly, I think Windows and Android are totally blind-sided by this, just as many posters here and on other forums don't "get" it.

Retina isn't more pixels, it's *way* sharper displays. If you add more pixels to a display there's only so much you can do before the OS becomes unusable - UI elements get tiny, websites look funny, and so on.

I agree - HD movies will require more space, but 64GB pretty much has all my needs covered on a tablet.

While we all have gigantic media collections, the question that needs to be asked is how much music do you listen to at any given time? For me that's around 5GB - all the rest of my collection, I never listen to. I've actually recently started to just delete old albums... I haven't listened to them in 2 years why should I keep them around? If I should suddenly rediscover a love for oldies I had before I'll just re-download them from the p-bay, or re-rip them or re-download from wherever I bought them. No big deal - the collective stores it all.

For movies, I watch them once, then delete. I am not a person who keeps watching the same movie over and over again. Ok my kids do so I keep my Pixar collection, but everything else... nah.

How's this for progression.... 4.5 years after the iPod touch came out for $399, you can now get an iPad 2 for the same price. Crazy.

The iPad 1 to 2 upgrade wasn't particularly significant. The 2 to 3 "the new iPad" is more significant because of the screen. There was no camera in the first model and the camera in the second model was introduced only for facetime (it was a total joke to use as a serious camera, 0.3Mpixel and 0.7Mpixel.) The camera in the third model puts it on par with the iPhone 4 (5Mpixel.) (We'll later find out from iFixit that it's likely the same camera in the iPhone4.) Note that 5Mpixel cameraphones are like 2006 tech. Apple is dilibertly staying a step behind on the iPhone and two steps behind on the iPad for cameras.

Those are the only notable hardware changes that someone with both devices would notice. Screen and Camera. The rest of the changes are only noticeable through benchmarks.

In all likeliness there were probably features omitted due to time constraints. I saw no mention of NFC (which is more likely to appear first on the iPhone since it's more likely to replace your wallet than the iPad.) The die shrink process migration to 28nm hasn't come around yet for every part, so the LTE radio, NAND memory and other parts might be a combination of 40nm and 32nm right now. We might still not see LTE on the next iPhone model if there's any hiccup in 28nm radio chip manufacturing.

When the iPhone 4S was released, some of the business guys were mistakenly calling it a quad core because they were hearing "dual core cpu + dual core video." Business people are not tech people, and this is why the stock price sometimes makes no sense, as they speculate on rumors, and sell when certain things don't pan out.

If you don't want the new iPad for the better screen, wait till next year. For me, I was waiting for a Retina screen and a matching camera to the iPhone4S, but I'll settle for matching the iPhone4 since I can justify replacing a separate point and shoot 6Mpixel and a 5Mpixel cameraphone with it. This gives me an excuse to not tow around a separate camera and just take the iPad instead of a backpack full of gear that might not even get used. Time is money.

I'm not trolling, but I've noticed something interesting about the responses Apple 'fanboys' give to various statements:

Android smartphones outsell iPhones: "It's quality over quantity guys. iPhones are the best."

iPad outsells Android tablets: "The iPad is the best, because so many more people buy it. Android tablets should just go away."

See what I'm gettin' at?

(Don't flame me: my dad preordered the 64GB Wi-Fi+4G new iPad just today! Plus I think iPads and iPhones are, after all, great machines.)

I hardly ever see "Apple fanboys" - they largely exist in the minds of Android people who I am not going to call fanboys. I think people who buy Android and post about it on forums often have strong negative feelings towards Apple - for one reason or another. They disagree with Apple policy, think Apple is evil, or not "open" (ignoring that neither is Android...) or whatever. A multitude of reasons.

As for Android phones outselling iPhones - duh. There's a zillion different Android handsets out there.

I am convinced that Android actually sells WAY fewer high end models - $600+ unsubsidized - than iPhones. When I go to the mall here Android phones start at $150 (unsubsidized) - these by definition will sell heaps and bounds more than the $600 model. They're also more attractive than any Nokia or other phones at this price point - you get a big touch screen, a modern OS, you're part of the new world, all for $150. That said I don't think people use these for much more than making phone calls - anemic processor, small screen doesn't make these into good smartphones - to compare, they're much less capable than an iPhone 1 from 2007. And why not, given that they're cheap as chips.

So I think Android has a lot of traction in the low end right now, especially outside the USA. Zillions of low end phones once sold by Nokia - now sold by Samsung running Android. And there's lots of cheap chinese manufacturers jumping on the bandwagon though I don't think they're yet doing the numbers that Samsung is doing.

BTW even though I think the iPhone 4 is the best phone for me right now, by far, and I absolutely love it, I am able to enjoy gadgets from other manufacturers just the same. I don't' think I'll get one but I am intrigued by the Note. The huge screen being both the advantage and disadvantage... I think it's cool that thing is out there, and I see them on the streets quite a bit.

Apple today introduced "the next iPad", the latest generation of the company's popular tablet device. Offering a Retina display measuring in at 2048 x 1536 pixels, Apple claims that it is "redefining the category Apple created" with the original iPad. At 264 pixels per inch, the new display is considered Retina quality with indistinguishable pixels when held at the typical viewing distance of 15 inches.

Featuring an A5X system-on-chip with quad-core graphics, the Retina display offer 44% greater color saturation than its predecessor. All of Apple's stock apps have been optimized for the new ultra-high resolution display and existing apps from third-party developers will be automatically scaled up with text rendered for the new resolution. With additional work, developers can also optimize their entire apps for the new display.

On the camera front, the updated iPad features a 5-megapixel rear camera with advanced optics very similar to those found in the 8-megapixel camera on the iPhone 4S. 1080p video recording is also supported. Voice dictation as found on the iPhone 4S is also included.

Cellular-capable models of the new iPad also support 4G LTE as had been rumored by multiple sources. Supporting data speeds of up to 21 Mbps on HSPA+, 42 Mbps on dual-carrier HSPA+, and 73 Mbps on LTE, the new iPad offers a significant improvement in cellular data capabilities. LTE partners include AT&T and Verizon in the United States and Rogers, Telus, and Bell in Canada. Due to differences in frequency bands, AT&T and Verizon support will require separate models.

On the battery life front, the new iPad offers the same levels as before: 10 hours on Wi-Fi or 9 hours on 4G LTE. As for the device's size, it comes it a scant 0.6 mm thicker than the iPad 2 at 9.4 mm thick, and weighs 1.4 pounds versus the 1.33-pound iPad 2.

Pricing remains as before at $499/$599/$699 for Wi-Fi models and $629/$729/$829 for 4G LTE models, with capacities coming in at 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB. The new iPad launches on March 16 in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Australia.

Apple will also continue to offer the 16 GB iPad 2 in both Wi-Fi ($399) and Wi-Fi + 3G ($529) models.

Not a single surprise. I'm almost wishing the leaks hadn't been so on-the-ball. That said, switching away from the numbering marketing scheme and calling it "The new iPad"? Is Phil Schiller stoned or something?

It is definitely making me consider an upgrade as soon as it becomes financially doable for me to do so. The iPad 2 didn't provide enough to make me sad that I bought a refurbished first generation iPad, at the time of the iPad 2's release; though with iOS 5 not running as fast as iOS 4 did on it, and with these new features, it's now enough to make me consider it.

I wish they would just combine the wifi and 4g models. In other words, just include 4g on all of them. Do away with the 2 price points.

I am totally glad they don't! I don't want to pay extra for something I will never use! I don't understand why people would pay extra for it! :)

Will this asus do what I want? Probably not.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiTf-2graqs i changed my mind, cause its not a quad core ipad 3, so i will buy this, cause have a usb slot and free flash and free card slot usable for uni, thanks to all

http://eee.asus.com/en/eeepad/transformer-prime/specification/

Who knows if it's faster? This asus may not be a bad machine. But it doesn't run iOS, and it has 1/3 (one third!) as many pixels on the display (it's just an ordinary laptop screen), not as many Wifi options, only Bluetooth 2.1 (not 4.0) and no cellular options(!). (Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't see any)

I believe the iPad has all the connectivity (HDMI and SD Cards) as this asus (with adapters), but why? iCloud and AirPlay generally negates the reason for those anyway. Also, let's not forget, the sensors and screen technology (not just resolution) are better in the iPad and the keyboard (it's Bluetooth) I'm typing on for my iMac, it works with the iPad also.

So I guess this asus doesn't have what I want. Again, it may not be a bad machine, but it just won't be able to do as much, look as good, and it's not likely to be as software upgradable either.

----------

Ordered, got my confirmation mail, soon to be $1k poorer. :p

I would be too, but I already had the $39 cover and the $99 AppleTV, so it only cost me $878.74.

Enjoy the crappy software.

And no parallel printer port? FAIL.

oooo quad core wow..

haha the iPad 2 doesn't have the best number "specs" but by benchmark is still faster then any tablet (a couple months ago) or phone...

your quad core doesn't mean crap... and the new iPad will still be better hah
and yes like the other guy said, enjoy the software.. it'll slow you down even more lol

I think if I were to get one I would wait till I could get it off Amazon or Ebay (new). That way I could save 40 - 70 bucks in Taxes. But I guess I am cheap... or patient ;). But I guess to most (not all) people who buy Apple products money is not really an obstacle (Or they like going in debt, ha), or how else could they afford a $2400 laptop. (I am writing this from a 13 in MBP I got off Ebay used! :p )

Actually, it appears that the Camera on the new iPad is more like the camera in the iPhone 4S, the optics are the same (appear to be), though the resolution is lower, the same as the iPhone 4. I'm confident that the new iPad camera will take better pictures than the iPhone 4 and much better pictures than most 8MP cameras out there. (resolution is less than half the equation for quality, the best 3MP camera can take better pictures than the worst 12MP camera easily, 16 blurry pixels vs 4 crisp pixels is all it takes for improved quality).

Looks like I made a good call on keeping my iPad 2, as for what I can see as improvements I can wait another year to upgrade. However the case would be different if I had a 1st generation iPad.

Yeah but 2.1 bluetooth with possibility of file shareing with all devices in world! And i dont need more than that also not a bluetooth 4 witch is with restricted shareing abilities, still 2.1 is better. Yes no 3g 4g but wireless is enough for me at uni, cause i dont need to pay a plan. Yes the iPad has better screen only, but no card sloth, no real usb port and no quad core. Yes iPad have DualCore with 4GPU but Asus have Quad Core with 12GPU! Of course the apps are sweeter on iPad but no free flash player for example. It has not a 8mpix back cam like the prime. I would opt for an iPad, but for uni usage, were i need to share easy between devices and at least an usb port needed, more customization, i must say, asus transformer prime is the best and i go for it:) Oh and don't forget the price, its alot cheaper about 600 dollars for the 64GB.

Oh and why do i need adapters? When its built in asus, and why do i need a bluetooth keyboard when i have a dock-keyboard?And why need i airplay and icloud?Again money spending?I don't will nor do that apple policy crap. I need a combatible device for uni usage and most are pcs there with usb so this is what i need a combatibility between device, no icloud and no airplay! Nope only iPad may have it as adapters, but why? Why paying again for adapters?Asus has hdmi and usb and sd card build in. Why paying for flash player? Its free on the adobe website for mac and pcs. Then why paying for iwork? Its free libre office for mac and pc online! Why spending more money for something i paid allready high enough? Its a no ipad, but asus transformer prime, the screen does not move me;)
