No 3G? great for the rest of the world. then no one can use iPad outside of the door, but the American. Tim Suck

Apple would have had to pull out something big and unfortunately this ain't it.

Of course it's still going to sell like crazy because Apple has great advertisement and people are brainwashed.

How exactly did Apple manage to brainwash 315 million people into buying iOS products?

Fact is that the iPad has the best software by far of any tablet, both the operating system and third party software. Fact is that the iPad has the best build quality. Fact is that Apple has the best service, with stores where the employees are actually going to help people with problems and are not going to fob them off.

These three things together mean any competitor trying to sell similar hardware specs has to sell for a lot less, to provide the same value for money. So what you think is "brainwashing" is actually customers being more savvy than you are. In addition, there is some degree of brand awareness, but that is only a small part of the equation.

Several companies tried to sell tablets in the same price range as the iPad. They all failed. HP ended with a fire sale and eight digit loss. RIM is now on a permanent sale. And Apple just pulled the rug away under the feet of any company that thought they could sell a ten inch tablet for $400. The problem that these companies have now is that they cannot actually build products and price them competitively _and_ make any money at all anymore.

The new display looks nice.

But there is one thing which bothers me.

Twice the resolution means four times the number of pixels.
But the Apple A5X is only two times the speed of Apple A5 in graphics performance (see live stream on 0:28:48).

So, the graphic performance of the new iPad is only half as good as the previous one?

Well, will be fast enough anyway. But just in case someone overlooked that fact.

No need to upgrade from iPad2

Unless someone ready to buy my iPad2 32 GB(3G) for $500 I would not bother upgrading it. Doesn't have much improvements besides retina stuff. It was like first iPhone 3G Vs iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4 Vs iPhone 4S.

Camera upgrade is not so useful since iPad is not suitable for that. SIRI with email dictation capabilities would be nice - not sure if it is there

It will be very difficult for Apple to revolutionary with current design. They need to change the design like iPhone 4.

And 4G is not avalaible only in the US ...

Actually the US implementation of 4G means an US 4G ipad will not work with the LTE networks starting to spring up in Europe as we use a different frequence for it.

Also I belie AT&T and Verizon LTE networks are sufficiently different that the iPad will need different LTE hardware.

LTE is a bag of mess, its not standardised at all, granted one of the higher Ghz ranges is meant to be for global LTE I am not sure if the new pad supports this

I love how "revolutionary" means "change the design" to a lot of people. Yeah, it's cool to have something that looks different from the previous models. There's sort of an emotional appeal to that. However, ultimately the retina display IS a big deal. Unless something's come out since the last time Wikipedia was updated, there are no android devices with a resolution remotely comparable to the new iPad. Yeah, it's not going to reinvent the category... Because the category is 2 years old! It's a solid update.

I am, however, miffed that apple won't bring Siri to the iPad 2. Or at least dictation... Seriously? It has THE SAME specs as the iPhone 4s

How do you do it with an iPod, or a MacBook? After today, iPhone is the only apple product that is numbered by generation. (which is okay, since they're selling three generations of them right now)

Well I don't carry my iPod around anymore because I have an iPhone and my iMac stays at home. But the iPad comes everywhere and gets pulled out in front of people and they will ask which model it is.

I liked the numbering system myself. It just made it very easy to know where you stood in terms of what generation you had, especially if Apple is going to continue to sell the older generation (or as you point out in the case of the iPhone, two older generations).

At least we aren't going down the road of Android with another new stupid name every three months. Apple is nicely taking its cues from luxury automobiles and sticking with simple names and simply hierarchy.

----------

It's just going to be the same as an iPod Touch, Macbook Pro, iMac, etc... You can call it 3rd gen iPad, iPad 2012... it's not that difficult.

Well it is confusing when they are still selling the iPad 2 and the iPad. Assuming they keep this up for a year, will consumers be walking into an Apple store and know for sure which is the better product? Will Apple still call this the new iPad six months from now?

Apparently the New Ipad's 4g dosn't work any place outside the US as it uses other frequencies?!?! WTF??

Many operators here in Europe offers 4g, but the Ipad wont support this!

OMG. OMG

Well that's their problem, since mobile Flash no longer exists (according to Adobe, who no longer support or develop it). These people need to get with the times.

LMFAO Ok  Some people are true fanboys.

I don't think your logic is sound.

Your analysis assumes that (for starters) the iPad 2 was just barely cutting it on graphics as it was, That both number of pixels and graphics speed scale the same, and that 4x's the pixels require an equal amount of graphics speed. I believe none of these things are true.

Time will tell, and in a week we have real reviews with benchmarks.

I would be too, but I already had the $39 cover and the $99 AppleTV, so it only cost me $878.74.

Yes. This is also my first tablet purchase, I was quivering with excitement even as I filled out the online pre-order form. I have a 27' imac and a 4s, and am eager to see what magic I can do with them. :D

First thing would be to try hooking it up to my classroom's IWB and seeing if it can replace my crummy tablet PC that seems to show this odd blue screen (something about running out of memory) and restarting ever so often!

If only apple accessories weren't so overpriced...:(

Next week can't quite come fast enough! :)

TODAY Show Dufus

On the today show, their technology "expert" (did not catch the name) let everyone know that yes indeed, SIRI is on the new iPad, and speaks japanese! Also, he said it comes with "bigger hard drives". Some expert. (Al Roker tried, unsuccessfully, to correct him about Siri. A few minutes later, after the break, Lauer announced a correction that the iPad does not have Siri.)

siri is a software issue,so with the 3rd generation IPAD having a built in microphone I can see no reason why apple will not add it later on when it comes out of beta. Giving how apple runs things they might make it a paid add on . Free or paid I will get it if they do add siri in the future.

Yeah, but don't forget that the A5 has like 7 times the graphics performance of the A4.

No Loan

Wonder how many people will go in to debt just to get this, or take out a silly loan at 5000% APR to pay for it.

Got to go, need to go get a loan for the NEW iPad.

No loan here and not going into dept over it either - pay cash for everything does not own a "Traditional" credit card:) Only thing i am bumbed about is no memory bump 32 - 64 - 128 Since apple bought a plant that makes flash chips i am surprised not a memory bump - that might come next time! 16gig seems to be to small for me unless u just check email or read books. You can go to the apple store and click refurbs and get ipad 2 for $100 to $150 off original price they still have 64gig ipad originals for $399

Reasons Not to Buy the New iPad

I’m all for the latest and greatest shiny new gadget debut. But the speed at which devices show up as the new “must have” of the moment is, frankly, mind numbing. I’m a little nostalgic for the days when it was perfectly acceptable to have the same computer or laptop for 2 to 3 years. All that said, I'm not impressed enough to pull the trigger on this iteration. It's no going to change my life in any significant way I wrote more about the reasons not to upgrade on my blog https://placester.com/2012/03/5-reasons-why-you-dont-need-the-new-ipad-3/

Ordered mine - black 32GB :D Wanted white to go with my 32GB 4S but I never liked the look of the white iPads at work (ex-Best Buy UK). The back never looked right with the white front.

No Siri are you siri-ous? I was going to buy this but without Siri forget it. The best part is that you need to have an internet connection to use Voice Dictation on the new iPad. Why they excluded Siri is a mystery to me and a lot of other people. Looks like I will save my money for the next iPhone instead. Apple will still get my money, they just have to wait longer now.

I think Siri makes regular tasks easy and efficient. Personally, I rather say what I want to do than type it all out.

I used to think gigs were important. I upgraded my laptop to have > 1 tb and have an iPad 32gb. But with iCloud now, I think the large gig hdd days are over. I doubt my next laptop will need more than 128 and I've just ordered the new 16gb iPad.

For me music and movies always took up the bulk of the space on my gadgets. iTunes Match and Pandora solved it on the Music front, and if we are lucky, there will be an addition to iTunes Match to include videos of various sorts. In any event, there is good software to let you stream your video library from your desktop. Sure, you need a decent internet connection, but rather than pay 100$+ for more gigs, update your internet and iCloud storage! It'll do you much more good.

Internet is as good as it gets in my house at least, Cable, newest AirPort and AirPort Express. Netflix rarely has issues, iTunes often. Problem is I rarely buy movies but 99% of the cases rent them - but with Apple giving you 24h only and suddenly in the middle of the movie having to wait 3 hours is not an option, especially not during the week. And the next evening may be already busy and then movie is gone. Complaint several times to Apple, so far got a refund but in the long run its not fun.

Waited for nothing. This sucks hard - not even a reduced price for the ipad 2 :( I want the new ipad for £300, not old technology!

which they've been doing for years with the various ipods. It's just nano or classic or touch - the official product name doesn't have a number but if people need to refer to which model it is they use the generation number. Same goes for macs too, they're not selling imac 8 and macbook pro 5.

thissssssss

and thiisssssss. They won't make you pay for it, if I had to gamble a guess about that detail though. Siri isn't in because it's still Beta, and annecdotally, people still have trouble with it. (Annecdotal evidence, the best kind)

Also, for full disclosure, I pre-ordered one yesterday along with the ATV3. Yes I was a little dismayed at lack of Siri, lack of CAMERA flash, Lack of >64gb (doesn't have to be 128 - correct me if I'm wrong) and most importantly lack of 4G support from Telstra - but I've been wanting to get into the iPad world for some time now, and just like with iPhone 4, it finally ticked the minimum amount of boxes required for my purchase (and many others that Apple throw in that other companies just don't offer).

I didn't buy it with the intention of iOS 6 making it better, I didn't buy it with the thought that Siri may come, I bought it because as Tim Cook said, the iPad does the whole tablet thing better than any other product out there and I don't have one, so why not jump on board with the ultimate offering if I've got the money?

No flash?

[EDIT: ****, I didn't realize how that sounded! I meant the camera flash LOL!]

my thoughts exactly.

you have a 27-foot iMac?

So, there are both AT&T 4G bands AND Verizon 4G bands inside one iPad? In another words, there aren't two distinct version of iPads like there was for the iPhone 4 and iPad 2? Can anyone confirm this?
