If Apple continues along this path, they'll slowly lose their status as hip & cool.

First good argument defending these commercials. That'd definitely be good thing and may indeed be motivation behind this new approach.

Exactly. The appeal of a Mac is that it's easy to use, it's for the everyday person. If they're so easy, why do they need 24hr genius support? What these ads say to me: Macs aren't easy to figure out, especially when you need them most.

I agree, are people going to think they have to call in this "genius" every time they have a question about something (and it seems there's lots of questions)? To me that's not a good thing. That's exactly why people grew to hate PCs, because they always needed professional help to use them. Is the Mac not "the computer for the rest of us" anymore?

Agreed, but its weird I thought all gay men had great taste!

Exactly! For the longest time I just assumed Steve Jobs was gay since everything Apple made was so stylish and he oversaw so much of it. How ironic that he is replaced by someone who actually IS gay and may lack the style Steve had.

----------

Just tell him to eat some pineapple and everything will be alright.

Lol, gross.

Some of you guys need to stop being so negative. I'm seriously sick of Steve's passing being used an excuse for stuff you don't like, too. Some of you need to grow up

Absolutely, yes.

People need to stop being so precious about what they perceive Apple's ad department should be doing.

Hmmmm. They're funny and cute but they don't seem very "Apple" to me.

Then again, if companies didn't change their look they would stay the same forever.

Edit: LOL what does being gay have to do with anything?

These advertisements are terrible. I wish Steve Jobs was still alive. This is what happens when you put that moron Phil Schiller in charge of running ads, without Steve Jobs to keep him in check.

Apple needs to go back to making ads like this and this. Hilarious yet spark curiosity about product.

I just re-watched them. The only thing I find a bit concerning is that people may think they'll need a "Genius" for everything. Macs are meant to be intuitive.

They're not very believable. For one thing, the little boy "genius" doesn't look old enough to have his own apartment or fly without a guardian. Does Apple really want to convey the impression that the geniuses it hires are teenagers working their after-school jobs?

We should not forget what is happening in the marketplace right now. Microsoft has attempted to clone apple's retail approach and pretty soon (unless it fails miserably) is going to be located in malls all across the country just like Apple.

Apple needs to put a face, a quality and a reputation to their stores FAST. Think about it - Apple store experience is something only Apple customers have had. If Apple wants to keep growing in this market - they need to attract brand new customers. The kind of customers that are about to be given a choice between the Apple Store and the Microsoft Store. These ads are about competition. I am certain you'll see the same old campaign style ads about new hardware - this is just a new launch in response to a new type of competition.

My mrs and I saw those ads and we liked them. Yes it's different and I'm glad macs are getting some screen time. My wife and I are European (I'm British and she is Swedish) she even went to say thats a good advert. We are living in America and in comparison the other ads on American tv it was alot better than most.

Have any of you considered that the ads may be targeted more at the international market? Also give it a rest about "Steve jobs wouldn't of made this. A CEO cannot physically sign off on everything anyways. If it was a bad advert (which its not) it would be the ad departments fault not cooks. Also I love the comments saying they are elitist and snobby and not apple like, those comments in themselves are snobby. Macs are much better and reliable than pcs but they do fail and the apple support is a great aspect to the apple experience. Sorry but all the "apple is losing its way" comments annoyed me so had to post.

DUMB DUMB DUMB.

Now why would a company EVER show that their software is so HARD to use you need a "genius" to help them? Seriously crappy commercial.

Fire them now.

Haha thats funny! Where are the two other commercials? Why did you not include those when you wrote about them Macrumors.com???

I personally hated the "I´m a mac" commercials. They just were not funny. Maybe to you americans. But certainly not to a norwegian, such as myself. This however, is great international humor.

One things hasn't changed with the passing of Steve Jobs - there's still no shortage of "experts" who know better than Apple.

But now they can tag their "expertise" with supposed argument clinchers like "this would never have happened if Steve was still here."

Sorry guys, but you weren't experts when Steve was alive, and you aint now either, know matter how much you invoke Steve's name.

This.

Steve Jobs is gone. That's what's happening.

Yes, of course because everything that happened under Steve's watch was perfect

Nonsense.
Even a geek like Paul Krugman could not figure how to use the yTube .app on his iPad.
People often do counterintuitive things. And most people buying Macs are people from the Windows PC land.

These ads are TERRIBLE. They're like Apple ads from the early-mid 90's.

:(

No, they made me smile.
:): That is enough.

Some of you guys need to stop being so negative. I'm seriously sick of Steve's passing being used an excuse for stuff you don't like, too. Some of you need to grow up
I'm sick of this notion that Steve Jobs was some god who could do no wrong. And yes MR Iis becoming way to negative. They should rename the site from MacRumors to MacWhiners.

These commercials aren't for "us"...it's for them".

Meaning:

Apple is obviously targeting people who do not currently own the mac.

Why would apple make an add that said, hey power users, here's a commercial with the terminal...the tag line says "the grep is over".

I'm waiting on the 4th ad....set in a big computer store. Announcer says "is there an Apple store guy here?". Apple guy says "I'm an Apple store guy!".

Then the woman comes to meet him and takes him to the Mac section. "You haven't updated your iMacs in over 450 days now.....and yet they're in this store with hundreds of brand new PC's which now have much newer tech and are half the price. Are you embarrassed by your new CEO Tim Cook and the fact he doesn't seem to know that Apple make desktop computers?".

Apple guy rips off his shirt and sets himself on fire in protest while screaming "But at least there are hundreds of old people and hip kids crowding round the iPad's and that's all matters!!!" as he draws his final breath.

If Phil Schiller is still in charge of worldwide marketing, how could he let these ads slip out like that?! These didn't do a lot of convincing to make me want to go buy a Mac.

I'm currently studying advertising, I graduate at the end of the year, but even I can see that these ads miss the mark. It doesn't take expertise to know that the ad doesn't make you want to buy a Mac.

It's a not up to their usual standard, plain and simple.

I thought you'd at least know the first rule of judging advertising success would be knowing the objective...

How can you *assume* the objective of these three ads is to sell Macs, and therefore judge that they've missed their mark?

You forget, Apple isn't in the computer business. Nor the phone business. Nor the software business.

Apple sells an experience. From the moment you see their ads, to visiting their web site, walking into their stores, ouching and holding their products, opening the packaging and so on, Apple is selling you an experience.

The Genius Bars and geniuses are a part of the experience that Apple obviously feels is being missed or undervalued, especially by existing customers.

The airplane and baby ones make no effort to sell Macs. Personally, I like these two ads, they create a warmth and friendliness around Apple with a bit of self deprecating humor thrown.

So, the "mark" these two ads aim for, to promote another segment of the great Apple experience, is indeed hit.

I do agree tho the third is much more about trying to sell Macs but is a bit arrogant, no matter how much they try to play it down, and does undercut the good work of the other two. Maybe it's aimed at a different market, because I wasn't even aware Mac fakes are an issue in the western world.
