I agree with the firewire. I havent been able to actually use anything that uses it yet but from what ive read its superior to usb in terms of sustained speeds. Cant wait to get my feet wet in the mac world![]()
well lets be clear here, to apple FW400 is dead. Yes there will be cries of "but my external HDD is 400!" This is what apple does tho, out with the old (especially since 3200 is on its way) and force the semi old as the new standard. Its good for the industry because if forces everyone to step it up and look to the future instead of skimmin by with tech everyone knows has to go at some point.Even my 8 year old PC case has a FW port in the front. I don't do any fancy video editing, just downloading videos and splitting them up into usable clips, making the occasional DVD. That should hardly be considered "pro." I know it looked like FW wasn't present in some of the photos, but I just can't see how they can do this. Firewire isn't going away any time soon. MAYBE on the lowest end model, if the $800 price is true and it's just a stripped down notebook (ie, combo drive, no FW, etc), but anything beyond that MUST have some form of FW.
It seems a lot of people here are confused by the difference between pro and consumer lines. The reason that the macbooks have combo drives is because a lot of people who use computers are not nearly as tech knowledgeable as people who use forums. Most people use computers for word processing and internet, with maybe a bit of media use on the side. Even in with more tech savvy people, not much more is done. The reason people ask for bigger harddrive bays is that the people using their computer for work NEED the space, or more features. A lot of people on here are simply consumers who may opt to get a professional computer. You do not use these are work use and therefore should not dictate the features that may be included for those who may need them.

Thinking back to those leaked case photos that www.apple.pro released earlier in the year. They definitely had rounded edges.
Yet the recent leaked ones from the same site don't. Quite square case edges.
So those originals were obviously not the ones we are looking at now. Where they prototypes? If the site is bogus then, why not now too. Should we trust either leaks.
(Edit : Sorry for typo in heading)
I keep being surprised by this statement. I've got one, a panasonic, that's seems a good model but doesn't use firewire. Just USB2.0. I'm not convinced that its that uncommon either with DV camcorders.
I think you guys might have to get over your need for this, especially in consumer level machines.
Well, you haven't done your homework if you're not convinced. FW is just better and faster than USB 2.0. Given the option, take FW, hands down, every time. Some camcorders have USB connections for transferring stills or MPEG video, but for actual DV importing (which is far superior to MPEG), it's always done with FW. USB 2.0 is just too slow to be practical. Just out of curiosity, what model camcorder do you have?

I really hope to see 800 as apples new standard, especially since his 400 compatibility (adaptor sold seperatly)
The new leaks show neither the screen casing nor the bottom of the laptops. The curve could still very well be there
I have no problem with 400 going away, as long as the replacement is backwards compatible. I'm fine with a $10-$20 adapter, I'm just not fine with having to buy more computer than I need and spend a lot more money in the process.
Ok, fair enough. I get it now that maybe you use it more for streaming that file transfer.
Geez I'm at work now and I can't remember off the top of my head. I wasn't debating that it was faster mind you. Just whether it will stick around.
For your guys sake home I'm wrong!
The base corner's didn't look to curvey to me in the side shot showing the ports.
Well, we'll soon know !
+1 to that, give me FW800 and a super drive please
But this makes too much sense, so we won't see it.Hopefully that's my pessimistic PC mindset coming out. Apple is supposed to be the best at making things "just work," right? If I can't even plug in my camcorder, how does that fit in with their tagline?
Side note: when was the last time apple actually used the "it just works" tagline?
I don't know about as a big advertising statement, but it's used several times not so prominently on their website.
I hope the weight of new Macbook is less than 4lb.
