First they took away the optical drive with the stupid MacBook Air and now they are set to remove the headphone jack. It seems Ive is never embarrassed by his mistakes. Here's a clue, Sir Ive: removing stuff is not innovation. You have the gall to sell a $2,000 computer without a Blu-Ray drive? Why? How does removing something improve my life?

If Lightning earphones are better how is it better to remove the traditional headphone jack? I have invested a lot of money into DVDS and Blu-Rays and 30-pin accessories, no way am I moving over to digital and Lightning anything.

The 30-pin connector was good enough. Blu-Rays are good enough. Innovation means keeping things the same but make better and newer things.

Soemtimes taking things away does make sense.

There's really no way to make an Ultrabook sized device (macbook air) that has an optical drive. So sometimes, you have to sacrifice / compromise where it makes sense to and where it is required.

Dropping Optical drive in a MacBook Air? Makes sense. Dropping Optical drive on desktop iMac's? Makes no sense.
Dropping RAM slots for soldered RAM makes sense in Ultrabook or MacBook form factor. Dropping it in the Mac Mini didn't make sense.

I'm fine with dropping technologies where there are decent alternatives and it makes technological sense (or requirement). I detest dropping things purely for business reasons (EG: Mac Mini).

Except you forgot that us in the computer world start counting at 0. Which does make the iPhone 7 #9

*sigh*

Counting may be zero indexed in many programming languages, but cardinality most certainly is not.

int iPhoneVersions[10];

will create an area of 10 integers numbered 0 through 9. Not 11 integers numbered 0 through 10.

Why can't you do that, and at the same time keep the 3.5mm jack? Also, it seems like Apple won't be shipping wireless headphones with the iPhone 7.

You forgot to mention the following disadvantages of wireless headphones:
- Less user friendly
- Needs to be charged
- Heavier
- Reduced sound quality
- More expensive
- Not a universal standard that can be used with billions of appliances all over the world.

What benefit does removing the 3.5mm jack give us again? I can't think of any. Why is an iPhone without a 3.5mm jack better than one that does have a 3.5mm jack?

Specifically removing the jack? Honestly only Apple knows that. I'm sure they have reasons and maybe part of it is the depth that will interfere with a future iPhone design. And besides, there will still be the lightning port if wired is really needed for some purpose.

Honestly, all of those disadvantages in your list are a zero issue for my use. I'd easily take the ability to lose the wire if that list is the only issue.

So you can buy expensive headphones to rival the sound quality of inexpensive wired headphones.

Or you can, I don't know, spend the money on more expensive wired headphones with better sound quality, no batteries to charge, no pairing issues, and get a light more comfortable device.

The $250 Jaybird wireless headphones my brother in law uses for running sound like s**t compared to my $70 Bose SoundSports. Mine are also lighter, more comfortable, and stay in my ears better when running. I'd give up Apple before I'd give up my headphones.

Jaybirds sound like complete s**t compared to $70 headphones? Yeah, sure. Been using multiple pairs of Jaybirds for 4 years multiple house per week. They sound great. Might not be the same as some expensive wired pair, but that's not what they're designed for.

Man, if the 3.5mm is that important to you and you'd give up Apple before you give up your headphones, then I applaud you for putting your money where your mouth is and voting with your wallet.

I think you totally forgot that Apple supports wireless headphones for more than 6 years already.
Fixed that for you.

Yup. And they'll still be supporting wired headphones via lightning going forward.

READY FOR MY NEW MACBOOK PRO

EDIT: ****. I JUST READ IT WON'T EVEN BE THERE

You are totally missing the point. Please try to think next time.

There are obvious benefits when removing the optical disk drive or replacing the 30-pin dock connector. What is the advantage of removing the 3.5mm jack exactly?

Removing an unnecessary port? Helping with waterproofing? Freeing up space for something unknown or for a future design change?

I was gonna say I can't wait to see the comments during/after the keynote, but we all know what the oh-so-clever responses there will be.

"Apple is doomed/done/finished."
"This was an embarrassment."
"Worst keynote ever."
"Fire Tim Cook"
"Something something Steve Jobs."
"Can't innovate anymore my ass."
"Something about focusing on the Macs."

Why is it unnecessary? there has been nearly 1/2 a Century that has used the 3.5mm port as standard audio interface, that exists in more than just phones. it's the de-facto standard port for any consumer audio. I'd say it's pretty necessary for anyone with any audio equipment that they use wired.

Waterproofing has been proven multiple times by other phone manufacturers that include the 3.5mm jack. The 3.5mm jack is entirely possible of being waterproofed.

The only legit reason for dropping the iPhone's 3.5mm jack is the last one. Some unforseen technology that we just don't know Apple is using, and needs the space for. if thats the case, I'd be very curious to see what it is and what has apple come up with.

But, barring that final "wow" feature we didn't know about, Dropping the headphone jack is user hostile. I can only see it right now (and don't mind being proven wrong on Sept7) as a Revenue grab. Right now, you can use any set of headphones with iPhones. It's a completely open, free market that Apple has absolutely no power in. Don't want to pay for Apple headphones, or use Beats? Apple gets zero revenue for using an iPhone just to play your own audio over 3.5mm jack. Remove the audio interface and make it so that it's only bluetooth or Lightning, and Apple increases their revenue stream (at least for lightning). for any 3rd party manufacturer to make lightning compatible headphones, they have to pay Apple for the MFI program, which means Apple gets revenue for every headphone sale of lightning headphones.

Try the Bose SoundsSports before you're going to assume the Jaybirds are better. And my point is that they are not expensive. Any make sure you use a decent sound file. My old collection of 128kbps mp3's sound like s**t on the SoundSports.

Got my Note 7 pre-order in before the free speaker offer ended.

You've had the ability to "lose the wire" since at least the iPhone 4. You're not gaining anything by taking out the jack.

Shouldn't the MR Buyers Guide say "Don't Buy" on the iPhone at this point or is even MR hesitant to recommend the iPhone 7 over the 6s?

There are no advantages to removing any of those things. Doesn't matter how superior Lightning or digital is. I want things to stay the same.

"Headphonegate" or not, I'm excited for this years event. I have a 6S+ and I doubt it'll be upgrading this year, but I'm looking forward to seeing what Apple is bringing to the table that maybe hasn't leaked yet.

New MacBook's please!

Lol, these replies are hilarious. Honestly, removing or not removing the 3.5mm jack doesn't bother me, I'm really just trying to theorize why Apple might be removing it.

My thought is, Apple better have some awesome AirPods for wireless that are decently priced and easy to use if this really is the case (hopefully like the Pencil, where you quickly pair and charge by plugging them into the iPhone).

Unnecessary because they have the lightning port for wired headphones.

Nice! Congrats (I'm honestly being sincere). I didn't say that Jaybirds are better than wired headphones. You said they were s**t. I'm saying they're excellent wireless headphones for very active workouts.

Agreed. And I haven't been using a wire with the iPhone for at least a few years now.

My guess - I think Apple is going to play the angle of wireless is better than fumbling with wires. And if you really need wired, theres the lightning port that is more than capable.

MacBook Airs are for people who don't need a real computer. It's a toy. It's an accessory to brag how much money you can afford to waste.

So if I choose to use an iPhone I'll have to keep a separate pair of Lightning earphones just for it. Stupid. Don't care how much superior it is.

Just like when our federal government forced us to do away with rabbit ears. Not innovation at all. Keep things the same but do something better.
