That still doesn't indicate an Apple TV at all. I don't see a reason to switch to a larger auditorium just to announce a new Apple TV with Apps.
(This event)Bill Graham Civic Auditorium: 7,000 people
(Normal iPad/non S revision iPhone announcement venue)Yerba Buena Center for the Arts: 700-ish people
(Normal iPhone S revision) Infinite Loop 4: -300 people
This has to indicate something along with the street blocking, I don't know what. But something must be happening, especially with the security that they normally don't have.

Why do people think apple will talk about apple TV at the next iPhone event? Is there anything substantial at all that would lead us to believe that?

It is kinda strange that everyone thinks there will be a new ATV. This rumor has been swirling around the last few apple events. Sure the ATV update is long over-due, but I do not think there has been one single "leak" or even anything remotely close to a credible rumor.

Apple has been talking with cable companies/networks, but they are yet to come to terms on anything as far as we know. I really want an updated ATV, but there has been zero viable leaks. I would think we would have hardware by now unless it is slated for late 2015.

This may be the wrong thing to do, but everything they are doing is really indicating that they may have a rabbit up their sleeve this time. In other words... they may have actually been successful at keeping something new really secrete this time... I'm hoping so. I'm so in the mood to be "Wow'd" once again.

Maybe to demo it on big TV screens, apart from iPhones and Apple TV what else could they announce?

The only reason is to invite more people and to have room to showcase the products after the event.
There is no specific clue about Apple TV so it could be anything else but at this time the TV is a good guess.
In 2014 they introduced Apple Pay and the Watch so they needed a broader audience to include people interested in payments and in fashion.
This year the audience may include people interested in TV shows, movies, maybe games.

Yep, all seems reasonable. I just wanted to point out that some people here see the strangest things in the invitation as confirmation of new products or hints. Someone a few posts ago thought that the absence of two colors on the right side of the invitation should indicate something. These speculations get out of hand, and without fail 1 minute after the end of the keynote this forum will explode with disappointed people.

Just to add this as an example: the invitation is clearly aiming at Siri and imitates the waves in the new OS. With some effort you can interpret the leaf from the Apple as a finger pressing down. But what would that inclusion in the invitation add? Even if Force Touch gets introduced to the iPhone on the 9th, the hint at this is so far off and Apple will never confirm that it was a hint, that in the end this means nothing at all. Besides that, the invitations have had a similar formatting in pattern and color the past few years and rarely have they pointed or hinted at any major product introduction that was not already confirmed to be the head introduction of the keynote. In other words, the past few years there have been no secret hints at new secret products in the invitations.

Don't want to build up too much hype otherwise we're let down but this venue is quadruple times 3 the size of the usual place where Apple hosts their events.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts: 700-ish people

Also whats with the street barricades, seems awfully odd for an Apple event.

If this is just some Apple Music entertainment I'll be disappointed. No more stupid U2 fiascos.

People have been working self driving cars for ages and it shows no real signs of taking off yet.

That's not entirely accurate. Personal cars are still a bit away from introduction to the road, but Mercedes is already in the process of gaining road approval for their self driving truck. It is pretty amazing, and while it needs assistance when doing small manoeuvring, it is completely autonomous on the road. We are on the cusp of seeing self driving cars on the road.

"Look deep within yourself" reminds me of Silence of the Lambs haha.

Listen carefully. Look deep within yourself, Clarice Starling. Go seek out Miss Mofet, an old patient of mine. M-o-f-e-t. Go now, I don't think Miggs could manage again quite so soon, even though he is crazy.

Tech Crunch has some more details on TV.

http://techcrunch.com/2015/08/27/apple-is-about-to-lay-down-its-tv-cards/

We’ve confirmed many details of the new device with multiple sources. First, that the new Apple TV, as has been reported previously by Buzzfeed, will feature an updated design and Apple’s A8 chip in a dual-core configuration. The more powerful chip will support an updated interface with much better effects and navigational improvements that make browsing through big content libraries — one of my biggest wants — much easier.

To control the new Apple TV? A new remote. One major feature of which was pretty much nailed by Brian Chen in an article earlier this year. It’s slightly bigger and thicker, with physical buttons on the bottom half, a Touchpad area at the top and a Siri microphone. Info about this remote was included in a report by Mark Gurman earlier this month, along with some other information we’ve confirmed about the new Apple TV.

One thing that hasn’t been talked about yet is the fact that the new remote will be motion sensitive, likely including several axis’ worth of sensors that put its control on par with a Nintendo Wii remote. The possibilities, of course, are immediately evident.

If Apple did indeed ‘delay’ the Apple TV from being released at WWDC, then it probably had a reason. And, if my sources are correct, that reason could well be polish, polish, polish. The experience of using it is said to blow away the types of junky smart TV interfaces we’ve had to deal with so far. This is the first real Apple TV product.

This is big. This is huge. There is nothing bigger or huger in the world than Apple event. Literally the whole world will stop to see these announcements, and I can't wait.

I just hope the streams will be able to cope with what will be unprecedented demand from the eager public. There's literally going to be something for everyone at this event. Let's go!!!!

Sounds like an iPad Plus if you get the hint from Siri

"The only hint i can give you right now is a hint of lime. And that there´s a BIG announcement on 9 September"

"Well, I hear there´s something BIG happening on 9 September"

BIG = iPad Plus

although a 65 Inch Apple TV is also BIG I´m still thinking iPad Plus

An amazon Echo type device would be awesome. If it was all built into the AppleTV it would be even more awesome!

Granted it would probably carry a very hefty price tag.

I used to get excited waiting for the iPhone even but this year and last year, well, I haven't been excited over anything I've seen that is expected. Saw a report this morning showing the bottom label of a 6S box that shows there will be a 16GB model again this year.

It makes sense. There are still tons of people who can get away with 16gb, and it gets apple an extra $100 from everyone else. If they started at 32gb it would really eat into the 64gb model sales.

This event has the possibility of becoming a PR disaster for Apple.

Think about it.

Normally Apple holds events in venues that seat around 1200 people. BGCA seats 6000. That's SIX times more people.

Now if Apple doesn't fill those seats it will look like an empty auditorium. That is bad publicity. You want a full place not one with just a few people. I know that from experience.

So..

Apple has to be inviting people from sectors other than the tech industry. Similar to the Apple Watch event.

Now then WHY would Apple invite people not in the tech industry ?

Is there a sector out there that is getting invites but are under NDA for a while ?

Has anybody heard if anyone from the entertainment industry has been invited ?

I'm gonna guess other online news sites that are entertainment related will be announcing the invite over the next few days.

That or there is going to be a full fledged concert there with tickets going to fans of "Taylor Swift".
But she is in Houston Sept. 9th.

Nah, as someone has already mentioned, Apple can easily fill an auditorium of that size. 6000 is nothing. You won't see one empty seat.

Looks like a siri overhaul, and not just the UI change in iOS 9. Maybe OS X support? Hmm.
If that would the case I think we would have seen it at WWDC. That is, unless, Siri integration of some new sort is so integral to whatever new products they announce they kept it under wraps. Though I am glad they are keeping some focus on Siri; I think it has a lot more potential from what it's grown to be.
