All I want is a 5K IPS panel in an Apple-branded XDR-Display-like-enclosure for $999.
then you don’t need it…At $2500 I’ll just buy another TV for my computer.
No I am comparing what kind of pricing strategy Apple follows. And I don’t think iMac 27 variants would have a price difference of more than $300 from their 16” Macbook Pro counterparts. $500 would be a bit much I think.I don’t think comparing prices with the older style MacBooks a very accurate way of guesstimating the price of a future iMac. It’s more than just the processor. You have to count the cost of the Touch Bar and battery that the iMac doesn’t have. Then you have to figure out profit margins which might not be the same for the MacBook versus iMac. If anything I would say the price of the older models could be used as something Apple would work towards. If they’re trying to cover the same market they might go for a similar price but then of course you have to calculate inflation which has been crazy lately.
… nobody ever lost betting against an Apple product being expensive, but $2500? I don't buy it (figuratively, or literally I guess)
None of the Apple Silicon Macs have been more expensive than their Intel counterparts — mostly they've been a bit cheaper. It seems quite likely that the entry level 27" iMac will cost the same as the Intel iMac, so we're talking $1800.
Why would a 27" display — effectively an iMac minus the computer — cost more than an iMac?
I'm betting on $1500. Still expensive. Still a premium over the competition, including the LG. But not ludicrous money.
I would hope for a different size, but a wider than normal display would indeed be appreciated. If they go for 21:9, 6880x2880 at 34" would be ideal - but I suspect that would easily put it in the same price range as the current pro display. In the Apple spirt of "Think Different," I'd really rather see an Apple branded ultra-wide. My personal interest is about 40" UW 5K/2K... or basically about TWO 27" classic iMac screens side by side in ONE frame.
Pffft. I used a 12” CRT standard television set with my Apple II+ and a cassette tape player to load software... until the Disk II came out. So there. ?
Agreed. An Apple-branded display would be a great complement to the Mini, but I was hoping to see the 27" in that $1000-1200 price slot.I personally, think you’d be very surprised how many people would want a standalone display direct from Apple.
Is this proving a joke? Apple, we want an iMac without the computer in it for less than the cost of an iMac. Not some insanely high end display that costs less than $5k in some configurations (lol).
Apple took so long releasing this display that I bought a Samsung Odyssey G9 and while I hate Samsung the display is incredible, I can't go back from ultra widescreen 1000R curved displays. It's as amazing for office work as it is for gaming. 240hz while Apple still struggling to put faster panels than 60hz in their offerings. It's so immersive and the lack of bezel for office work just looks and feels great. And one display cable per computer and one power cable without clunky adapter is actually really minimalistic. Anyone considering one should also spring for the Ergotron HX mount with the heavier duty swivel. It's my favorite accessory/peripheral I have ever bought for any of my Macs.
Why? Sure, there might be cheaper displays, but comes with cheaper quality. I don’t think a ~$1000 display is totally unreasonable for a 24” display. But to be fair, I’d have to see the specs’ first.
I personally, think you’d be very surprised how many people would want a standalone display direct from Apple.
Profit. Apple likes the big profit margins.$2500 isn’t a consumer-oriented display. There is absolutely no technical or cost related reason why they couldn’t give us a 27” display in the $1200-$1500 price range with speakers, a camera, usb-c hub, power for MacBooks etc. The entry iMac 27” is $1799 and is often sold for much less.
This article seems to be the same-old one we got last month, with no real news added to it. I'd love to hear the experts thoughts on an ETA for this one.

“it just works” and excellent UX 🤤I can't fathom what they could put in a 24" display to make it worth $1000.
