I'm so old, I remember those days when if you had a 14" 1024x768 LCD monitor you were the envy of everyone else.

As for Apple, I really hope someone is paying attention to eye strain issues with all their new displays.
It must be a matte display. Glossy sux.

Pffft. I used a 12” CRT standard television set with my Apple II+ and a cassette tape player to load software... until the Disk II came out. So there. ?
As I recall that would have been bigger than what i used in the late 60’s. With a dial up 960 baud modem

Here’s the latest Dell UltraSharp 27” 4K display. (U2723QE)
Priced at about $800 USD.
I really can’t see Apple competing at this price point.

My guess it they’ll go after the semi-pro market, willing to pay $2500 to pair with the new high-end Mac mini.
And for current M1 Mac mini owners, they’ll suggest you get a 24” iMac or new 27” iMac (probably $3K).

Given current history, the stand for Apple's monitor might cost that much.

Better options at lower prices. Typical Apple overpriced stuff. Assuming Mark “Guesser” Gurman is even in the ballpark, which he often is not…
I wish that were true but in reality we have worse options at much cheaper prices. 4K doesn’t cut it. The LG Ultrafine is not well made

I've got an LG 27" monitor, and ZERO eye strain.

I very well remember the 'early days' of flat screen monitors. I sold one that a client wanted, and they called back a few days later, after we delivered it, and complained about massive headaches. Their doc said it had to be something 'external'. They asked if it was the monitor they bought. I stopped over and sat in front of it, and said 'YEP!!! OMG!!!'.

I have never had that feeling since, but some people actually do, so I never discount that potential, but it's gotten less and less. Sometimes it takes some time to adjust to it, which sounds odd perhaps, but it sometimes works.

The key to relieving eye strain, I've been told, is blinking, so I have been told. People seem to stop blinking as much when looking at a monitor than they do when not. It works. BLINK! BLINK!, repeat...

I like that image. Wow...

My guess, prices will start at $750.

How? Again, Apple wants their 40% margin. So retail at $750 means it would have to be the "dirt cheap" and "junk" panels that others are griping about in this same thread. Plastic case? Questionable stand? How does Apple get their margin and deliver a retail price of $750? Because if margin and low price collide in product development, we know which one will have to give... else kill the product entirely.

Can't wait.
The 27" Thunderbolt Display is awesome.
Having ethernet, USB ports, thunderbolt, speakers and a camera all built into the display are what sets it apart.

I still use mine everyday for work. The only reason I want to update is for a higher res display.

Just release something alongside the new Mini. I’m sure there will be a sub-$1000 option available.

There certainly should be.

EDIT: I still have a 15" Cinema Display. It still works wonderfully, and I have no complaints, aside from the fact that the only way I could afford it was buying it 'open box'. (I hopw it doesn't hear me, but it's got to be 'old'...)

then you don’t need it…

you could just buy a 40” TN Panel LCD 4K Panel for about £350. There is a reason production monitors are expensive.

That reason has evaporated with OLED tvs for at least the past 4 years. Maybe 5. There’s no reason any less-than-professional grade monitor to be smaller than 35” and more than $500 other than highway robbery by the manufacturer and placebo effects for the buyer.

"Consumer friendly" at $2500? With friends like this, who needs enemies?

I knew a bunch of doc who made millions a year. I don't think a singe one of them would contribute money to save many of their 'friends'. So many of them were so covetous of their money, and were so envious/jealous of others. It was kind of weird. They were always competing over money. Silly, but being 'rich' doesn't buy many friends.

I will stay with my 4x27” 4K Dell U2720Q for now. It doesn’t have the Apple’s magic, but I did get four monitors for $2500 :)

Again. Apple is not going to sell a 27” 4K display. That is only about 160 DPI. That’s not even close to Retina resolution.

Apple still sells the LG 5K Ultrafine on their website for around 1300USD. Assuming they don’t remove this monitor from their store, I could see them pricing their own monitor in this ball park, maybe with a little extra for the Apple name.

I started off with the LG 4K Ultrafine. I still have it as a spare, but switched to the 5K because I wanted the built in FaceTime camera for zoom. I now have two 5k monitors, one for work and one at home. I did consider the XDR display, but it’s only appeal was the fact it was an ‘Apple’ display. Unless you are doing work which requires serious colour accuracy and contrast ratio, the XDR is actually not a good consumer monitor, especially as it doesn’t even have speakers or a camera. Of course, for those that need a studio quality monitor, the XDR is actually very competitively priced.

Whilst some people will take issue with the design of the LG, and I admit it would be nice if the supplied mount allowed you to rotate the display, apart from it being a black slab, the monitors themselves are actually really nice. They had some teething issues with firmware, not waking up properly, interference due to shielding, but these have all been fixed now and I do not have any issues with any of my monitors. I can dock and undock effortlessly as I bounce between work and home. The display is pin sharp and with all functions being controlled within MacOS and no buttons on the monitor, it does actually feel like an Apple product (it just works!).

Of course, in keeping with the times, maybe the Apple monitor will resurrect long extinct interface standards, as the LG monitors only provide a USB-C integrated hub. Maybe the apple monitor will add USB-A, RS232 and a couple of phono sockets for the ’Pros’….

For me, it would have to offer something quite special to justify the cost and effort of replacing the LG monitors, I really love them and can see why Apple has been happy to leave this gap in their lineup, because they complement the Mac really well.

I have the u2720q and while it is a great monitor especially for the price and on its own, but when I have it next to my 2019 27” iMac it just isn’t as good. 5K does make a difference.
