I really can't wait for new, amazing Apple displays. I'm super excited...but I don't know why. Because of the lack of decent displays, I've changed my needs over the past 5+ years. I wouldn't buy an Apple display now.

But I want these to exist. Maybe because they should, and it shows Apple is serious about the Mac and Apple in the workplace.

to anyone saying fanboys blah blah blah

Go find a recent enough PC monitor that has a PPI higher than 200 and doesn't dither for 8-bit color.
Most people go with laptops, those actually using monitors are either:
- in offices -> cheapest whatever that management can find
- gamers -> hates HiDPI and would rather sacrifice anything for refresh rate
- professionals -> very expensive stuff, along the lines of the XDR or higher

I wish future iMacs can have target display mode. But given that even target disk mode is gone... sad.

I'm so old, I remember those days when if you had a 14" 1024x768 LCD monitor you were the envy of everyone else.

As for Apple, I really hope someone is paying attention to eye strain issues with all their new displays.
Stuck pixels were a big thing in those days, too.

A rumor from 9to5Mac has suggested that Apple is working on an external display that will include an A-series chip, offering GPU cores that could help power graphic intensive tasks. The Pro Display XDR successor is expected to have this A-series chip inside. The rumor is from mid-2021 and it said that Apple would use an A13 chip, but there are newer A14 and A15 chips that Apple could pick instead.
emphasis mine… does this make any sense, to split the GPU between host CPU and the display itself acting like an eGPU?

if this happens will it pave the way for eGPU/ePCI over TB4 on Apple Silicon Macs? (noting that an intel Mac mini with eGPU is still faster for graphics intensive tasks than a fully spaced M1 mini)

Take the price of a Mac mini, keyboard and mouse from the iMac and it comes out to be around $399. That would make a killer price for an Apple 4.5k display.
will never happen … Apple accounting says you can never beat the house.

I‘d be tempted at half that price, if only to cure my disappointment when viewing my HDR videos on my 5K LG display. The picture and brightness is eye-popping on my new MBP, but dull as dishwater on the LG.

a $2500 "cheaper" display would be laughable. Sure, if it's like a middle tier with the Pro XDR being the top end. They do really need an affordable one, like $1000 max range as well.

So like the 2004 iBook?

So old? SONNY, PLEASE. :p

On an unrelated note, I'm rocking the gorgeous trash can with two 30" and two 20" retro Cinema Displays because F' my electrical bill.

Adding the 20's to my ol' battery backup exceeds the consumption rate by... well, a lot. So meh.

Apple Silicon + 1TB flash storage + multi-display-compatible + sub-$1K = Multiple "Cheap Display" purchases.

Come on, Mac Mini Pro Max Plus S... Clean up my cable clutter.

How? Again, Apple wants their 40% margin. So retail at $750 means it would have to be the "dirt cheap" and "junk" panels that others are griping about in this same thread. Plastic case? Questionable stand? How does Apple get their margin and deliver a retail price of $750? Because if margin and low price collide in product development, we know which one will have to give... else kill the product entirely.
Where did you get your 40%? From iPhone? For monitors it could be less. (40%) 60% of $750 is $450. (20%) 80% of $750 is $600.

Apple is making cheaper iPads, iPhones, etc. It would not be unusual for Apple to have monitors start at $750, or at least under $1,000.

Hey, I’ll hope right with you. I’d love some Apple quality at thin margins pricing.

Might even bring a tear to my eye… pass that $20 hanky. ;)

Here’s the latest Dell UltraSharp 27” 4K display. (U2723QE)
Priced at about $800 USD.
I really can’t see Apple competing at this price point.
You can buy a 1080p 27" display for $400… so what?

I'm sorry, but if your vision is any good, a 4k display at 27" on a normal desk is just not going to look decent.

I own a few Dell monitors and have had a couple more in the past. All have had temperamental port issues for about a year prior to packing it in months after the 3 year warranty expired. I have temperamental port issues and display button issues on my one year old 27" 4K U2720Q ATM, it sold for about A$900. I paid extra for 5-year warranties on the last two Dells I bought but if these pack up early I'm done with Dell, warranty or no warranty.

I would rather buy $1200 Eizo monitor or the latest one.

There certainly should be.

EDIT: I still have a 15" Cinema Display. It still works wonderfully, and I have no complaints, aside from the fact that the only way I could afford it was buying it 'open box'. (I hopw it doesn't hear me, but it's got to be 'old'...)
Still a beautiful monitor! I think I even saw it in a movie recently (an ‘older’ movie ?) — still looks modern.

I have the u2720q and while it is a great monitor especially for the price and on its own, but when I have it next to my 2019 27” iMac it just isn’t as good. 5K does make a difference.
Again. Apple is not going to sell a 27” 4K display. That is only about 160 DPI. That’s not even close to Retina resolution.

Exactly, and that 5K makes a difference…in quality and more importantly price.
Which is my point. Apple doesn’t play in that space. So, when the article says cheaper display, it’s all relative. Certainly cheaper than XDR display money, but also not $800 either.

The 5K 27” LG UltraSharp that Apple sells on it’s site, goes for $1300 USD.
An equivalent Apple branded 5K display is going to be minimum $2000, likely higher.
