Apple insane!? Of course they are. They forgot to refund $200 to all the current iPod Touch owners.

How dare Apple release an octo core 3 ghz penryn CPU tower! All they're doing is making the 604e CPU in my powermac 8500 more worthless by comparison! That's just a big spit in the face to loyal Apple users like me!

Didn't someone sue Apple once with an argument like that? That improving their product line would damage existing owners by reducing the resale value?

I myself am hoping that Apple will make my almost two year old MacBook obsolete, so I can justify buying a new one :p

The next person to whine about Apple upgrading their stuff too quickly should be forced to use the following products for the rest of their life:
* 8-track and Vinyl for their listneing pleasure
* Black and white TV for their Lucille Ball viewing pleasure
* Commodore PET - for all their computing needs
* Atari 2600 - for all their gaming needs
* Rotary dial phone - for all ther personal calling needs

Ridiculous.

Gee if you don't like your 16Gb one now that the 32Gb one is out, give it to your little sister and get the big one.

Oh she bought you the 16Gb one? Now that's a problem!! ;) I think it's called re-gifting.

Well the great thing is all the iPod touch look alike, the difference is all on the inside unless you squint looking at the back of the case or scrutinize the About information in the Settings. She's not gonna notice because you're not going to let her get close to it anyway. Give it to your best friend and buy the big one.

Me I'm going for the 8Gb iPod touch while they still have them, that was my favorite size in the nanos. Great for having loaded up with some favorites you don't have to bother syncing again very often, and just grab and go. With the touch I will use the same playlists as I had made up for the nano, but knock off the operas and then just put in a movie or two.

Your logic is obscenely faulty. Apple can and should update their products.
The issue isn't that Apple shouldn't update their products, yes they should. The issue is the pace that they are updating the iPhone and Touch line. They are not going this fast for their other products.

funny

this is so fun . Dude , apple didn't even lowered the price .

The stupid thing they did is those 20 $ update-tax !
update my buDDD !!

Guess i should have titled this thread "Consumers are Idiots", because it sounds like you people will keep running out and upgrading your Touch with every memory increase Apple makes. At a cost of half a grand for the 32GB Touch, that can be an expensive game each time.

Now, I've only been on MR for a while but I imagine that in the old days, there weren't useless whiny threads like this one.

I bought 8GB Touch and I am not an idiot !
If I have to buy one today, I would still buy 8GB one which fits my listening/viewing habits and is at the price I am willing to pay.

I have absolutely no heartburn over Apple's release of 32GB Touch at $500 !
Am I running to buy everytime Apple releases a product ? No way ! I will only buy what I need and not what Apple releases !:D

No one's making you upgrade.

But for people who have been waiting for a 32GB before purchasing, like me, this is perfect.

Also, if you can make more storage...why not?

I don't really understand your problem. Apple making a better product isn't taking money out of your pocket.
I can see where the timing of these releases could up set some folks. I personally don't care one way or another. If the company can do it, and they have, then so be it.
My 8gb iTouch is great, does what I want. I didn't feel any fingers from Apple in my pocket nor do I feel the urge to take my fingers and get more money for them.

Who said anything about upgrading each time? Your 8GB iPod touch still costs the same as it did when you bought it. There's just another, higher-end option slotted above it.

If you see something wrong with Apple keeping up with the competition (seeing as Creative updated their Zen to 32gb a month or two ago) then you have no business sense whatsoever. They've made no grand changes to the iPod, simply added more memory. This isn't a 'slap in the face'. It's progression.

Now, if they were adding new features every 3 months that required us to buy an entirely new iPod to take advantage of, you may have a point. But adding more memory? Please. Get over yourself. If other people having more songs on their iPods than you really peeves you that much, you need to get a life. This thread is pointless.

You don't understand my problem because you are not listening. Apple could have released the Touch with 32GB from day one for the current price. Don't be fooled into thinking that wasn't possible. We all know Apple overcharges for their memory. This pricing scheme thing with the iPhone and Touch was planned from day one! While I agree technology improves, you don't see them increasing memory with their computers like they do with the Touch.

Samsung announced a 32 GB NAND Flash laptop drive in January, of last year for a $600 premium. The cost of the drive was more than a current 32 GB iPt. The fact that a mere year later we're getting that capacity in a $500 product that has many other costly components means a spectacular price drop within a year. Hell even the MBA has a 64 GB NAND flash drive for ~$1000. It's very likely that the cost of 32 GB flash in September was prohibitive for trying to fit it into a ~$500 product. They're options were to sell at a loss, price it really high and drop when memory dropped (and we know how well price drops go with the iPhone fiasco) or wait until the memory falls in price to make it fit in their target price range.

Six months is by no means too soon. Computers usually see speed bumps at at least this rate, and it seems Intel announces a new processor line/architecture a yearly basis. Either Apple can sit on these updates and wait while their competitors get faster, cheaper, more capacity or they can do it as soon as it's cost effective. If they want to maintain an image of being on the cutting edge they need to do it as soon as it is cost effective.

If Samsung discovered a new way to get a 64 GB chip produced at the cost of the 32 GB chip for the same price you can bet your behind that Apple would release the 64 GB Touch within weeks, because you can be sure that their competitors won't wait.

But you posted it as a quote from me.

Thats because I was quoting everything you had said in this forum in an abbreviated format. You just don't get it eh?

The issue isn't that Apple shouldn't update their products, yes they should. The issue is the pace that they are updating the iPhone and Touch line. They are not going this fast for their other products.

And? I don't believe the other products (e.g. Mac Hardware) have components that upgrade so fast. Mac updates are largely dependant upon the latest processors from Intel. They have just been released in January, so you can expect to see an update there in the coming weeks.

This issue is that there is now 32GB flash memory available to Apple at a reasonable price.

Let me make this clear, it would be foolish for Apple not to take advantage of the latest flash memory advancements. They would lag behind their competitors, and would fail to provide customers with what they want.

You do not have to buy the 32GB model. The 8GB and 16GB model are still available at the same price. Nothing in that regard has changed. I'll phrase it one final way before giving up on this thread: we now have more choice, that is all.

Guess i should have titled this thread "Consumers are Idiots", because it sounds like you people will keep running out and upgrading your Touch with every memory increase Apple makes. At a cost of half a grand for the 32GB Touch, that can be an expensive game each time.

You people? Now you are just becoming insulting. I suggest that you reposition your condescending tone before one of two things happens: this thread gets locked and/or you get into bother with the mods.

People are not going to upgrade every time something new comes out, well some do but it is stupid. You buy when you want to always knowing the risk that it will be outdated in a few months. That is how technology works. You can't wait for ever, you will always be behind the curve. Buy it enjoy it and deal with it.

This is getting stupid on Apple's part now. Why do they keep insulting Apple fans? They keep releasing products with more memory only months after the products initially come out. This is so lame! Why not just release an iPhone or Touch with memory slots so we can increase the memory ourselves? Oh wait, I forgot Apple is now a company based on greed and not quality products.

All Apple is doing is turning away loyal customers.

Don't buy the 32GB Touch yet as a 64GB will be out this summer and a 128GB will be out for Christmas.

Just because there's more capacity doesnt mean you have to buy it! Buy what you think you can use and no more. 16mb is plenty for me.

It's not idiotic to save up and buy a nice iPod touch as a gift. The good thing about multiple lines in a product offering is exactly that: you can get a gift that will be appreciated without killing your budget for ten years. Anyway Valentine's day is almost upon us so the timing is perfect for an extra update to the iPod category.

Who buys every upgrade Apple offers? I don't buy desktops so I don't even know what apple's full line there looks like now. Now I did drool over the new iMac pictures when they happened to "get in my way" on the Apple site one morning. I didn't rush over here that day to say how cool the thing looked nor to post a tirade about still no orange 2nd gen nano how can they be so persecutory of my dreams and hopes blah blah blah and what an insult i bought a 3G nano hoping they'd understand and build me a nice old 2nd gen orange one but NO, they have to bring out a flippin new eyeMac...).

I don't think Apple hates me but I don't think they're going to drop by and see if there's anything special I'd like etched into the back of my next wireless keyboard or something.

( gets out last summer's almond-colored nailpolish... contemplates what's to lose on an old silver nano... will nailpolish destroy aluminum or am i good to go... but is almond as good as orange... should i just get a pink iskin duo... how many days until Spring? )

Anyway Apple's no idiot when it comes to parking its bus near a different spot in the mall every time out of the box. I just ordered an 8Gb iPod touch while they're still around. Some of us actually downgrade now and then ;)

Exactly, If you are happy with what you have there is no need to buy the next best thing. Apple is not forcing you to upgrade.

I haven't been following this thread very closely, but has ANYONE said they are going to run out and upgrade every time Apple updates a product?

What I have read is a lot of comments wherein people state that they are happy Apple continues to improve their products. I have also seen many comments from people saying they are both happy with their current Touch, and happy that Apple continues to update their products.

"Consumers are idiots?"

You are such a child.

So let me get this straight... we have two scenes playing out right now.

Scene 1: "Stupid Apple! They just upgraded my 5-month old product! Darn them! I want a refund! Bah!"

Scene 2: "How come Apple doesm't update there products often? Like seriously, I want a new freaking Apple Mac Pro!"

Come on people! It's called buyers remorse. Whenever there is something better out there on the market, everyone wants it! I've had my iPod for 5-months now, and I love it. Sure, I wished I could have gotten the soon to be 3G iPhone but I couldn't justify spending the price of one activated iPhone for the same price as TWO iPod touches (16 GB).

But guess what? Soon, Apple's going to update yet ANOTHER product, and once again these forums are going to be littered with threads like these. Apple did not lower the prices of any model when the sizes were upgraded with the iPhone & iPod touch. And the whole $20 software upgrade, DEAL WITH IT.

Welcome to the world of technology. Steve Jobs is going to be your host on this reality check.

Haha. This is funny. The Touch was released 6 months ago. You say that's too soon to upgrade the amount of memory. Well, guess what buddy. About a year ago you couldn't get 1 GB flash drives for under $20, now you can get them for under $10.

lack of SD lot was mentioned when iPT was released, whoever bought the thing, they must know this as well, so.. they can only blame themselves for falling in the trap, its a trap, apple is greedy, so? its all on the table, apple is greedy, but at least in this case, apple didn't lie.
