I hope Apple continues to lose their mainstream appeal after throttlegate. They don't deserve to be valued at over $1 trillion.

Underhanded scheme and call it a feature? Do Androids and MacBooks with degrading batteries have this feature? No. BS excuse to help make your iPhone slow for you to buy another one once the battery wears out.

The X design will around for a minimum of half a decade, so its design will sell over 300M bare minimum with the combined sales. People being wowed by the X design won't be feeling that by 2019 when the iPhone released that year looks essentially the same with different new colors or smaller notch.

It's just smartphone fatigue and no smartphone whether iPhone X or Pixel 2 XL or Note8 will ever wow us. Just another honeymoon phase until the next phone you buy. Most buyers when they say they love their new phone don't know what love is...

It’s not a scheme to make you buy another phone lol. Yes Apple should have been opened about it but the reason they do it is actually a good thing.

I don’t think hard core android users care about iOS just like hardcore iOS users don’t care about android. The ones that care are the flip floppers.
Indeed. There is also an element of snobbery from both types of users I’ve found but it’s only from a small vocal minority. You get people mocking Android users and even those who use older or cheaper model iPhones than the one they use. Then you get people who laugh at iPhone users in general and assume we are not tech savvy or lacking in intelligence to be able to use Android. I only ever encounter this on forums though as in the real world the people I meet couldn’t give a toss what phone you use and rarely take any interest.

Android devices and iPhones are ten a penny these days and hardly status symbols any more. The market is so saturated with high end flagships it’s become a bit of a non subject when releases are only incremental these days.

Android phones with degrading batteries wouldn’t get updated by that point.

Not really. It’s the truth. These same folks who are judging from their lofty perch in the sky spend more than 1,000 dollars in a year on coffee or liquor etc.

Exactly.

I'm not sure why this is even a point of discussion, everyone on Earth knows that Apple makes expensive, luxury products for a niche consumer. Notebooks, desktops, streamers, peripherals, everything Apple makes is significantly more expensive than pedestrian versions of the same technology. No one compares a Timex to a Rolex, so why would anyone compare an Android to an iPhone?

There's an answer, of course. It's continued growing pains and misunderstanding from those who don't comprehend that the reason iPhone's used to be so inexpensive is because the carriers used them as an enticement for consumers to remain chained to their networks for multiple years. The iPhone was never designed as a low end product for the masses. The carriers gave them away, they were bait for contracts.

The Kia people who received free BMW's now have to pay for their BMW's. So they run back to Kia, screaming how awful BMW is. It's ridiculous.

Yep! Why people are suprised that this phone is 1,000 dollars is beyond me. The Note 8 and Pixel with sales tax either are over or close to 1000 dollars where I am at with a 10 percent tax rate.

With that said it seems like the argument has gone back to like it was a few years ago that “iPhone is for rich people” I’m just a pleb though.

With carrier financing anyone can have it or maybe not go to the bar for a few weekends for which other than a bad hangover and potential STD there really is no return from it.

If the barrier of entry is too high then oh well. Your right about KIA’s and BMW’s though.

With carrier financing the X is like $6 a month more.

Good post.

But in the big picture, the core Apple iPhone consumer isn't interested in pinching pennies. Hell, we like having a more exclusive iPhone to separate us from those who are stuck in 7's and 8's and Pluses. Who do you think buys all those Mercedes, BMW's, and Range Rover's anyway? We like it when we pull into a parking space next to a Kia. We like it when people admire our Rolexes. It's nice after all these years to whip out an iPhone and have the other iPhone users around us take notice and bathe us in attention.

Apple is a luxury brand and the X is it's status symbol. The vertical camera and the notch tell the world on both sides of the product that it's not your mom's iPhone 6. Couldn't be more happy.

The note 8 is only £870 where I am (retail price). It’s probably gone down now. The X starts at £999. So there is quite a difference here. However it’s the X that I ended up with.

Live in Philly cheesesteak capital of the world. Anyway got my cheesesteak sat down and at a table next to me was this metro sexual dude. He whipped out his White iPhone X and it fit his metro sexual style.

That’s how I view the X. It’s way too metro sexual for me. I like industrial looking stuff.

Nobody suggests the iPhone is the equivalent of Rolex and Android is Timex apart from you. There is a huge gulf in price and quality between Timex and Rolex. That gulf is nowhere near the same between Android and iOS and this elitist label you seem to be pushing for iPhone users is misplaced and quite insulting. I would never suggest an Android phone is inferior to an iPhone simply because they appeal to different types of user. The price is close and both are consumer brands for the mass market.

Android's are inexpensive knock-off's of the iPhone. That's the public perception. I happen to agree with it.

As for what they cost, history shows there are many inferior products that are overpriced by their manufacturers in an weak attempt to increase brand value. Look up the Volkswagen Phaeton.

Some android phones are expensive and I would argue differentiate themselves from the iPhone.

A Samsung Note8 unlocked is $950, not an inexpensive knock-off. I'm not sure i agree with your public perception opinion either.
I am close to putting the iPhone X in the same category as the Phaeton.
Yes, recently I have become somewhat disillusioned in .

Actually there are better phones than the iPhone. But it’s not about the phone it’s about the ecosystem. No one can compete with Apple’s seamless integration with all it’s products. When a call is coming in you can answer it with almost any Apple product. Get a message all your Apple hardware receives it.

Everyone it’s not about the iPhone! There are actually as good or if not better phones on the market than the iPhone.

It’s about the ecosystem. Android / Google aren’t even in the same league as Apple’s ecosystem where all hardware works seamlessly together.

That's a good point. It should be noted that when I say "iPhone" I mean the hardware plus the ecosystem. We are talking about the experience of iPhone vs. Android, not the silicon.

Well there are devices as good as or if not better than the iPhone if you’re comparing phones.

Samsung got us Apple fans beat in the phone dept. But they aren’t in the same league as our ecosystem where all hardware works seamlessly together.

So when Apple reports earnings in January and they sold a record number of iPhones and report record profits, does this mean they are still losing the mainstream?

The "mainstream" are recipients of $0 iPhone's circa 2014 whining about it in 2017 and blaming Apple because the only free phones they can get now are crappy Android's on budget networks, as if Apple had anything to do with it.

I don’t think that is the public perception at all and I’ve never heard anybody outside of scrabbling on a forum suggest that.

Apple has been behind the curve and following Androids lead in terms of features for some years now. I happen to think Apple copy but do a better job but they sit back and observe trends rather than setting them these days. Android in my opinion is less refined due to the sheer amount of devices using the platform, but it’s far from weak and manufacturers are producing some very good quality hardware. Samsung for instance have been matching Apple for quality since the S6 and it’s the main reason phones like the S7, S8 and Note 8 are big contenders in the market.
