The iPhone 8 is rumoured to have a 3D sensing style camera. Also I'm betting now that the iPhone will outshine the Note 8 and the galaxy S8 it happens every year, Samsung release a phone and then Apple release one that sells like hot cakes and completely outshines them, apart from last years Note 7 that truly was explosive, sorry I couldn't resist that joke I really did try :D
It's only because of the brand name. People buying the latest iphones are doing so because of the name alone. Apple doesn't care, they know they can sell the new iphones based on name alone and can save on costs be doing minor updates.

The last great iphone was the 5 and everything went downhill from there. Samsung has really been cramming a lot of stuff in their phone while apple is getting really comfortable.

I dissagree the iPhone 7 Plus is a great iPhone I love mine, but if Apple do this with the iPhone 8 then I think it will be a mistake.

Not water proof. Water resistant. Ip67
Read the post I quoted. It was regarding further waterproofing the phone by integrating Touch ID into the screen. It won't make a difference, because the home button is already waterproof.

Yes, the phone in total is just IP67, but that's because of the ports etc.

"integrating Touch ID underneath the display glass"

Touch ID completely under the display, so u may not have a Home button... ... The entire screen will be ToughID enabled. If you do have a Home button on iPhone 8 it would just "just a home button" and thats it

The pic is how it currently operates.
I understand how things currently are. But unless Apple is changing the UI paradigm, the home button is essential. So they move it and touchID "under the display glass". Ok so what does that get us? The bottom of the phone is either still a bezel or it is a display that is dedicated to the home button / touchID. Making it a dedicated area of the display seems pointless and actually detrimental. It gives you a bigger display to power/render where a fraction of it only displays a virtual home button. The alternative of just moving it under the display glass is basically what we have now except it won't be recessed. The "chin" bezel that offends so many would remain but now you can't even feel for the home button anymore. Neither change seems indisputably beneficial.

And on further thought, if the entire display becomes "touchID" capable (as I think you are saying), oh my... that won't be fun to have repaired... and only Apple would be able to. At least $250 maybe $400 to repair a cracked glass.

Interesting. I read that Samsung was also working with a company (can't remember the name) to integrate the fingerprint scanner into the screen of the Galaxy S8. However, the process proved too difficult and they weren't able to ship it in time for launch. Sounds like Apple's position right now. Even as a tech savvy consumer myself, I have no idea how that's supposed to work. A fingerprint scanner UNDER the screen, yet the screen still works? What?!

Whoever does it first will earn my applause -- Apple, Samsung, or anyone else.

Delay Delay Delay...please don't put the touch ID on the rear, that would be hideous and a technological embarrassment.

With 3D touch I use my home button less frequently, since I can switch between apps via a force press on the side.
They could introduce another force press area to replace the home button, and still put content on that part of the screen. iPhone 7 already provide a feedback when you press home, so it wouldn't be so different

The rumoured function strip sounds too Android to me so I'm wondering how a game etc would differentiate between a press of a Home Button under the display with interaction of its interface.

Again with this whole say-it-enough-times-and-it-will-happen CRAP "...with an edge-to-edge OLED display..."

With a yet unproven, GIGANTIC leap of assumption that a reported mass order of curved AMOLED displays, are intended for a new iPhone instead of, oooh, I dunno - maybe something ELSE that uses them, like Apple watch?

I do not believe that Apple will make the same mistake as Samsung, and put the sensor in back. I do not believe it. Samsung has made this choice for the Galaxy S8 due to lack of time to finalize the technology that would allow to pass it under the screen. Did Apple have the same problems?

^ This, yes. Even if they DID, they certainly wouldn't put it a few mm away from the camera... DOOOOHHH! -_-

No! That doesn't even look like a real attempt at guessing. It's like someone took the LG G6 and mated it with an iPhone 7Plus amidst nuclear fallout just for laughs. Begone in the name of Elvis, unclean spirit.

No, just no.

Apple does some weird things these days but that is beyond weird.

I'm sure Apple will get this sorted so it looks better than that.
Yes, apple will release a nicer design than this, that is for sure. There will be more leaks that look more refined, and it will grow on us, and there will be the usual comments from the same people that will state they want the iphone 4s design back or that the iphone 5/s was the nicest design, or why no 4 inch modell, or that SJ would never have allowed this, etc, etc....
And i would order one and have to wait 6 weeks minimal...

Yes, they need 70 milion of oleds for apple watch. They want to make sure they have enough stock for the apple watch for.... the next 5 years.
And they want to build them in 1 year. Just to be safe. Completely logical.....

I will take one refined feature from Apple over 3-4 "throw everything against the kitchen sink and see what sticks" ideas from Samsung.

Samsung just dedicated a button to its flagship phone for a voice assistant you can’t speak to. Samsung last-minute slaps the fingerprint scanner next to the camera lens because it isn’t able to come up with a better idea on time. Samsung releases a phone with a facial-recognition system that provides zero security. Dex is dead in the water. Don't get me started on other gimmicks like seeing what is inside your fridge.

This is supposed to make Apple quake in their boots and lose sleep at night?

Yeah at least Samsung gives you these options to try out..If you don't want to use them you have that option too and other alternative features as well unlike most features with a iPhone.....

That's the logic I don't understand.

What's the point of having half a dozen half-baked features which you aren't going to use because they suck so much?

Even crappy features take time and resources to implement. The opportunity cost here is that Samsung then has less time focus on really fleshing out a feature and doing it right, because their attention is spread so thinly over so many areas.

On the flip side, take force touch for example. It's baked into the OS. It's supported at the OS level, and is an incredibly polished feature which can happen only because Apple controls both the hardware and software layer, and more importantly, has the support of app developers who don't mind supporting this feature in their apps as well. And you know that force touch is only going to get even more refined with future iterations of ios. All these come together to create a great user experience which can only happen because Apple cares and cares enough to invest the time and resources to make it work for everyone.

Or maybe Samsung is reduced to spamming their phones with all manner of half-baked gimmicks because they know this is as far as they can go, given that they don't control the software and services later of their products, and so there is only so much they can do with regards to product integration and refinement.

That's why Apple has earned the right to take my money while Samsung hasn't.

I'm sure any company would take your money earned or not. There is no set rules or barriers to prevent you from purchasing any device as you please. My money goes to Samsung for now.....A company that never fails to innovate and does not ignore their fanbase or gives you the exact same device every year with very minimal upgrades.

But tell us what TRULY unique and "innovative" concepts and features Samsung have come up with... I mean ubiquitous ones that are in the day to day lingo of the everyman, the ones we all use day to day, and which even old people have heard of, and don't need to have explained to them. Wanna know?

NONE. AT. ALL.

Samsung are a shower of sh_te.

The hatred lol.....will be enjoying my S8+ while you guys enjoy The PAST

Take your time Apple and get it right. I don't want a TouchID-less phone that I have to bring up to my face to unlock or having to fumble on the back for the right spot.
Yes, I don't see how they could go Touch ID-less. Doesn't make sense. Wait a year, don't remove it. I don't see how it would be possible. Take out 3D Touch if it is a space issue, but don't remove Touch ID.

Nothing wrong with putting the Touch ID Sensor on the back of the phone. It may not be convenient since you need to pick up a phone off a table or desk, but the emphasis is being put on facial/Iris detection. As long as the sensor is always on and doesn't need an active backlit screen to activate, it should be fine.
No, no and no. I have my phone in a wallet case. Absolutely will not deal with that mess. I'll stick with my iPhone 6 for another year rather than throw my money for that.

Impractical and ugly.

Oh, that is too much. Samsung has innovated plenty. Easy to ignore it as a strictly Apple device user, it it is absurd to say they don't innovate.

To each their own.
Have great time training your finger to reach the fingerprint reader on the back.
What a mistake that is, completely clueless...
On the s8 unlocking is bad, but on the s8+ it is mission impossible. Can' t grasp that, what were they thinking.
Apple can make a homerun by integrating touchid in the screen, but even when they(hope not) have to put it on the back, they will find a better place , it is almost impossible not to.

But when we' ll get it on the back, apple will find a way to make a back-lit apple logo to soften the blow :)
