That is some fine detective work Arn!
Now can you please dig up some info on new mbp and mac pros... :p

If iSlate will be thy name...

Apptism may have to remove or rename thier app within the appstore for less confusion for those seeking iSlate info or for future "iSlate" affiliated apps.

You can see thier site for iSlate app here. :apple:

Also here is an iSlate used for children in school for solving problems instead of using paper and pen/pencil or chalk for that matter.
The unit is also solar powered --- I-Slate Solar Powered Classroom Aid

Now a Magic Slate as well? Is this a multi-touch MBP trackpad for the desktop or something entirely different?

There are already several apps in the App store that allow you use your iPod Touch or iPhone as a touch input device for your Mac/MacBook, as well as several VNC (and Remote Desktop) apps that allow you to use your entire Mac (or PC) desktop from anywhere.

Now put a zillion virtualized Mac's in that huge warehouse in North Carolina, and Apple could provide people the use of powerful desktop and workstation Mac apps without their having to own a Mac, via iPod Touch (or perhaps something larger)... a really sneaky way to get a whole bunch of ebook readers, safari pad users, movie/music/magazine/app customers, etc. to become Mac users...

That's some really big thinking there. I wish it would happen though.

lets not forget the form factor for the original "slate"

in this context, if you blur your eyes those could sure look like something else...

I use my iPhone 3GS much like this on a daily basis, I am growing tired of visiting the app store to make my iphone more like the rumored "iSlate" only to find more games and time waisting apps than actual productive or iPhone enhancing apps to make it more "cloud computing" in function.

It would be awesome to have the ability to use my iPhone or a device like the upcoming "Slate" but via a virtual iMac like interface without having to resort to vnc apps I currently use to run my iMac while out on the road.

Mostly because I doubt the new hardware will run a full or partial OSX without some integration to a virtual hardware.

I'd like to see a MBP update but there's not a "need" for it other than you wanting what's new. The current line is enough to get the job done. I'd seriously doubt a 10% performance gain in a move to Arrandale will change your life significantly.

The tablet has the potential to be something that changes the portable computing industry.

Haven't read all the comments, but anyway...Apple may have the trademark on Magic Slate, but the domain "Magicslate.com" is currently available for bid at DomainBroker.com. This might set the stage for some interesting litigtion....

Nah — the Magic Slate is supposed to be an external trackpad for desktops. "magicmouse.com" doesn't go to any Apple branded site. Why should the Magic Slate?

Oh god please no don't call it iSlate or anything resembling that! one of the worst names I've heard in a long time!

As bad as MacBook?

I remember the uproar when they changed from the lovely iBook and PowerBook brands to the clunky sounding MacBook.

But we got over that, right?

The name is utterly irrelevant:

Juliet:
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."
Romeo and Juliet (II, ii, 1-2), William Shakespeare.

The real REVOLUTION would be Mac OS X (touch) inside the Apple Tablet!!!

Magic Slate features head-tracking "HyperDisplay"?

This is my take on all this:

The tablet is basically going to be an iPod Touch with a large HyperDisplay screen: Three 5-megapixel cameras along one of the long edges of the display are going to enable it to track the user's head position as well as construct an enveloping view (to a degree) of whatever is in front of the slate.

This will enable a totally new kind of "pseudo-3D" experience for games as well as video chats where the head of the person you're talking to (also on a Magic Slate) will seem to pop out of the display as you move your head or shift your slate. Apps will be able to take advantage of this as well, lending a new and cool kind of experience to all kinds of applications.

It's going to be introduced as the "Magic Slate" for about $900 on Jan. 29th, for sale starting around April. There will be two versions: One with a 7" display and UMTS air interface, and one with a 10" display and WLAN only. This second one will go on sale a bit later. A new distribution and payment model for partially self-renewing content (think mash-up of newspaper/ magazine/sales catalog) for off-line reading will also feature prominently.

I have no private knowledge of any of this, but I think this little theory of mine is consistent with all known facts, rumors, insider quotes and clandestine prototype videos turned up thus far.

But book as a word is more attractive than slate. I can't think of anyway of putting slate into a word which sounds good. Macslate islate eslate apple slate. All sound awful IMO

imho the magic slate will be the touch pad from a macbook packaged into a small casing as an alternative to the mouse.

Doesnt sound very apple to compete with its self but when you look at the magic mouse & the Macbooks Touch pad, they both beat each other in certain areas.

I just wonder if this magic slate will be wired or bluetooth?

Wtf Is Wrong With All You Ppl Who The Hell Cares About A Damn Tablet????????????? Every Hour Something New About A Tablet.....i Need Updates For The Macbook Pros....

I love the way people think that just because there is news about the tablet, this means that news about the MBP is being blocked.

I remember beating my collegue next to my seat with that when I was 7 (he did the same back with a ruler), you can really beat quite hard with it and it does not break. I wonder how long it takes till apple receives the first complaints about how easily a magicSlate breaks. :)

MagicSlate... I don't know. It sounds like a toy to me (and several others have already mentioned that). A little disappointing. But well, let the rumor continue.

Dude, I'm sorry all you got for xmas was underwear but lighten up. Do you think Arn is not publishing MBP rumors because he writes about the tablet?

Guys I figured it out! The Tablet is going to be called (drums rolling):

"The Apple Magic iSlate Tablet Pad"

Hurray!

If this thing really does have a tactile-feedback-on-screen keyboard that comes and goes, I can totally see Apple billing this product as the "Magic Slate". If they can call a (barely)touch sensitive mouse a "Magic Mouse", then something this dramatic gets at least that much credit.
